It's funny how the myth of us only using a tiny fraction of the brain still perpetuates. It's that we use a certain percentage of our brain at any one time, not that we're only using that small percentage and the rest of the brain just lays dormant. Which makes this news story even more extraordinary really.

I know someone who has one of those shunts. They're amazing! He was diagnosed as having water on the brain as a baby, so they implanted a tube and trailed it all the way down in to his stomach to drain away the fluid. Of course, they realised that as he grew the tube wouldn't reach anymore, so they just curled it up inside his stomach so that it would gradually unravel as he got taller, and he wouldn't need to have another operation. Totally fantastic, and so simple!

Wow, this is remarkable! Shows you how much of our conscious life is directed through the outer cortex.

Try to look on the bright side. If he lost 50% of the remainder in an accident, he’d still be overqualified for PM.

So even though the overall mass is reduced, the information in those cells has grown and adapted over time, compensating for any major loss of dense matter. Fascinating. Anyway it's good to see a Civil Servant with an IQ of 75 still in a job. (''They say we only use a fraction of our brains true potential, now that's when we're awake, when we're asleep our mind can do almost anything.'' Inception)

Putain....C'est incroyable!!
For more interesting brain related matter I can truly recommend Iain McGilchrist's book: Master and his Emissary. Amazing science.
PS: it's a myth that we only use a small percentage of our brain capacity.

Fascinating story, it would be interesting to see if the brains electrical impulses are passed though the fluid or around it ...
