August 21st 2011 marks the one hundred year anniversary of the theft of the Mona Lisa, by Leondardo da Vinci, from the Louvre in Paris.
The portrait was taken by Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian man, who took the opportunity to relieve the four iron wall-pegs of their famous charge and walk out with it under his painters smock.
The theft was not noticed until the following day and it consequently remained missing for two years before it’s new owner unwittingly came forward.
The theft made international headlines at the time but has become largely forgotten in modern society. However, a new documentary feature entitled “The Missing Piece – The Truth Behind The Man Who Stole the Mona Lisa” goes to great lengths, with the participation of Vincenzo’s now 84 year-old daughter Celestina, to uncover exactly what happened and why.

While I hate to encourage criminality, you so should try to re-enact this as a TV special! A shame not to have done it for the centenary. Even more gripping television that Russian Roulette…
It really is a depressing indictment of society to learn how even the looters from one hundred years ago were so much more civilised and discerning than they are now!
Then again, perhaps if they had plasma TVs in those days, Vincenzo Peruggia might have been tempted to discover what size he could fit under his painter’s smock?

Vincent Perrugia must’ve been so gutted to go to all that effort to nick it just to discover that he’d stolen a knock off by a guy with a misleadingly similar name.
Reminds me of the time I bought some ‘Calgete’ toothpaste whilst on holiday that tasted of mud. That looked like the real deal until I scrutinised the spelling too.

It was an opportunist event really. Seems he’d only popped in to the Louvre for a quick Pizarro.

This is amazing, throughout the whole of my studies, I never knew that the Mona Lisa had ever been stolen ! I am trying to look at your work because we are in graphic design, and remembering back a few years ago you did some work on channel 4 where you influenced people through shop window advertisements, and managed to have one gentleman give away a pair of his shoes. I am looking for a video of this because we’re looking into subliminal advertisements, and I would really like to help share your view.
