To me, this sounds like an enormous prank perpetrated by the class. think of it. “Hey, we’re going to see a Hypnotist today. At the end of the performance, everyone should just act weird, throw themselves around, and pretend to be hypnotized. We’ll FOR SURE get the next day of school off! Pass it on!”

I’ve been party to more elaborate pranks than this, and this just sounds very suspect. And the beauty part is, there is NO WAY for any of them to get caught, unless one of them confesses, which they most likely won’t do for fear of internal reprisals.

And of course, my other thought is that the whole thing is a hoax to generate publicity for the performer. How come this never happens in a Midwestern town?

I can’t believe they hired a hypnotist, then arrested him for “witchcraft” when somebody got hypnotised.

Rory: Only by themselves. Hypnotism isn’t magic, it’s akin to getting ‘lost’ in a book or a film, or being really into your character when acting or playing an rpg. The ‘you have to agree first’ isn’t a magic formula, like the story about having to invite a vampire in. It’s just that if you’re not open to it, hypnosis isn’t going to work.
So no, they weren’t influenced by the hypnotist’s ‘powers’, because he didn’t have any superhuman powers. What likely happened is that the hypnosis of their classmates scared the kids (this apparently being a culture where belief in witchcraft is common), some of them panicked and believed they were bewitched (and subconciously acted on that belief), which in turn scared others into believing they themselves were bewitched, and so on. So yeah, mass panic.

Well, I guess the fact that it was Columbia, a country that is still rooted in some of the old “voodoo” ways might believe in witchcraft. But seriously, I wish I could have seen that all in person…

It also all sounds like a bit like a night out in Brighton
