Those are not the same colours that I see the numbers and letters in. Suggesting Synthetes see an O as Orange is a bit insulting, there is so much more the synthesesia than this obviousness.

I sometimes doubt if I have this. Then I find myself asking someone "what's that university that starts with a W, but isn't Warwick? Or a similar letter, like E or X or something" (I was thinking of Exeter - E, X, and W are all practically the same blue thing). Or the yellows, mixing up C and S, or Biology and Sociology. Then I decide that I'm going to avoid writing "cocktail party effect" in an essay that it would be relevant in, due to the fact that I have just made myself feel rather nauseous by typing it, sort of a mangoey bad Indian cooking sort of thing.
So yeah..

When I was a kid I remember having a set of big magnetic letters and numbers. These were in various different colours. I remember seeing the documentary on this a while ago and wondering if anyone asked the people in the experiments what toys they had as children - but then i guess that would have been to obvious wouldn't it?

been picking up silk screening lately, and having a hand in color processing has provided a playground for one of the most noticeable synesthesia experiences i've ever had. first time opening a jar of ink my instinctual reaction was to nose in for a whiff, found myself having to consciously control mode in the moment, pulling back and turning my eyes back full on as antenna. and still, to this day, mixing colors is truly matter of taste, as i mix til there's this certain sense of satisfaction in regards to how tasty the swirled looks. as though i'm tasting with my eyes. feels for real.

hard to imagine having an experience like that under circumstances of a study...

i don't believe in this but when it was featured in QI i got every one right. Just out of curiosity could you text me some words and ask me what colours i associate with them. I would be prepared to do a direct link so i cant look it up. Like i say i don't believe in it but it evokes curiosity.

I think Channel 4 or BBC done a documentary on this.. might be worth a look (I'm too lazy to search for it).

On a side note, right now I have slanted vision!! Everything is running off to the right, even words on pages. Umm diddly dum!

Very interesting - i'm a synaesthete with grapheme-colour connections but also music/sound-shape, and physical sensation-taste connections. I love finding out more about this stuff (also have days of the week and month/season colours) but have to say I don't know where you found that chart - the colours for each letter are completely wrong!!
Seriously though, although they are probably different for each person, a (sadly forgotten) study I was reading possibly on the BBC site, said that certain letter-colour links are more likely than others, like z or j being warm pink or purple, but they weren't sure why.

Interesting! My old English teacher once told me that we were all born synaesthetes; that in the few days following birth the brain learnt to differentiate the senses, and those with synaesthesia in later life had just not quite developed their brains properly. Not sure where he got that from, but only realised now that I had trusted it completely.
