Sometimes I care for people and think how they are feeling. Then I decide to be a tad more selfish yet happier. Perhaps this is not the nicest way to be but at times sure as hell can be great. Not my problem kind of attitude could be viewed as rude rather than simply lacking energy to see the point in caring. I do enjoy the moment of switching back and unfortuantely experience kindness to others a little more nowadays. Perhaps I am growing up.

Thinking a bit more like this isn't just good emotionally, it'll make you more accurate!

We naturally tend to think that what we do is more down to our situation, and what others do is more down to their personality than it really is (see: "Fundamental attribution error").

Derren i have an impossible challenge for you. I have a friend i was talking to about hypnosis and your show and he is adamant he cannot be hypnotized. At which point i said "not even Derren Brown"? He still said no. I am looking for a way to prove it to him. please can you help me Derren? I fear he will only become more sceptical.

thats a very useful way for the brain to react to certain situations in order not to feel akward or turn red or sad. I was wondering as an actor and someone who likes teaching others to sing and perform in front of crowds or audiences, could you use this technique say in front of them. Rather than the person saying '' ahhh no there all laughing at me'', could they not find a way to say...'' ahh there only laughing at what someone just said or because its a happy environment''.

Being a rational thinking and quite logical person, I often find myself doing this. My ability to be able to see past the emotions of others and try to explain away the cause of their actions keeps me cool headed. Working with children, this is an essential skill to have when they're having a bad day! :-)
I think the issue that some people face is deciding how acceptable those behaviours are and whether or not to let an incident go. I think we can all relate to the fact that it's ok to feel negative emotions but it's how we deal with them that's important to both ourselves and others. Especially when our actions directly affect other people.

As someone who had worked with angry traders in finance I can vouch for this method. It's a lot easier to take a load of abuse when you know the reason someone is angry is because they lost thousands of dollars this morning and they are just taking it out on you

Very interesting, i'm due in work for my appraisal soon and my boss is one of those who always looks angry and disappointed regardless of the situation, I intend to try and apply this technique today to see if it helps to keep me in better spirits throughout the meeting. Thanks x
