Anyway, I wanted to know if you think the subliminal/ motivational/NLP study cd's I've come across work and if so are there any that Derren would recommend for my son who is sitting exams soon. Suggestions most welcome! Thanks.

I received a head injury from birth in 1982. I have some short term memory difficulties due to this, however scans have shown no physical defect. I frequently forget things athat do happen and people tell me that I remember things that don't. I used to think I was the only person who did this- guess not.

@Suzie, I don't think Derren actually checks/responds to comments here, and I don't know what he would say in response to your question. But for myself, I'm so sorry to hear about your stroke, and I'm not surprised you want to try anything which could help your recovery. From what Derren has written about hypnosis, I think he *might* say that it can't make your body do anything it can't already do. It could also be expensive, and could take your energies away from the other important aspects of getting better. But I think he would also say that the best advice is obtained neither from magicians, nor from anonymous blog comments, but from your doctors. I wish you all the best with your recovery.

Suzie, I'm not Derren, but I think that's a really interesting question. I wonder whether your hand is stretching/moving subconsciously (ie the brain is involved, but your conscious mind somehow isn't) or spastically (ie the spinal cord and/or lower brain are involved, but the upper brain is not). If the former is what's happening, maybe (and I stress MAYBE, because I'm no neurologist and don't know much about brain damage) hypnosis or self-hypnosis could help. If it's the latter, then it would not help, because hypnosis doesn't really affect either the lower brain or the spinal cord -- that's basically just mechanical processes that are independent of the (higher) brain itself.
I wish you all the best on your recovery, and keep us posted if you do try hypnosis!

Thats an interesting post. I often wonder how traumatic brain injuries effect the brain because when i was around 15 i got hit in the face with a golf club, just on the eyebrow line of my left eye, i spent a month or so in intensive care, i had an air bubble on the brain, (as they put it) many mri and cat scans to monitor me, my only memories of the accident is the exact moment it hit me and a few seconds afterwards, after leaving the hospital ive had no other help or advice and always ponder am i the way i am because of my accident x
