to be fair this experiment cant really explain it…cos thats basing it on the fact you know for sure the spirit would be dragging the glass from the side and not on the top like the ppl around the table are doing….for alls they know the spirits could be using their finger on the top of the glass to move it.

One explanation that Derren talks about quite extensively in his book (a great read by the way) is put basically that you aren’t going to remember when things didn’t work. As human beings we want things that we believe in to work. you are likely to forget the 90% of predictions that didn’t work yet remember the astonishing and amazing predictions that came through. I was reading Tarot to a friend of mine a while ago and got probably 60% of it wrong however she didn’t care about that. It was the 40% that i got right (through cold calling) that she remembered and was happy.

@josh I agree that Derren’s method is more convincing evidence, but remember that the original claim (of a ghost causing the movement) is the one that requires proof. Just demonstrating a more plausible explanation is more than enough to dismiss it.

This is a brilliant series of videos, but i think this one is flawed. It suggests that the clever Faraday experiment “Proves” that the effect is fake. It’s good evidence, but calling it a proof plays into the hands of the scammers, who can just reply that the ghost is pulling the people’s hands, not the glass, or is tapping into their ‘auras’ and making them move the glass which would push the card as seen. The better evidence is what Derren did in his Seance show, where the message spelled out is a determined by what the experimenter has suggested to the people. or as described above, where blindfolds are used and the Yes and No swapped round.

I know who moves the glass. It’s that mysterious entity to the side of the camera that Kat keeps addressing instead of talking to the audience, i.e. us.
We never do get to see who it is, and yet Kat always talks to him/her/it.

Different topic: all the people who claim that the examples in each episode can’t disprove this or that other example. Well obviously! They just preset the general principle of how a paranormal event can be explained. So if you can be fooled by one, you can be fooled by others.
AFAIK James Randi’s million dollar reward is still unclaimed, yet only *one* success is needed for proof.
It’s like theism and faith, there’s no logic that will persuade a true believer even when it’s staring them in the face (or rather it’s not, which is why you can’t “prove” a negative)

i am not a “believer” in such things as spirits or psychic ability, and preffer to get my head round the scientific side of things rather than accepting phenomena at face value.however a few years ago when i was a bit younger i did used to dabble alot with the ouija board, and got quite dragged in.
i accept the reality that the glass is indeed being moved unconciously by the participants.
however i have one problem that has nagged at my reasoning ever since, which i try hard to ignore.
i was told on numerous occasions, by the ouija board (or myself?) of occurences that had not yet happened at the time, and have since.
as i said, i do not accept the explanation of “spirits”, or “psychic ability” as i believe this to be quack.
however i cant deny what happened…

any help?

The Faraday experiment proves that the force does not act on the glass. There is still the option that the ‘ghost’ acts on the fingers.

@kuryaki Dont touch the planchette at all and see if it moves. If it doesnt move, which it wont, then somehow the movement is connected to you. I wonder how?
