The anonymous campaign against Scientology, better known among its participants as Project Chanology, continues to this day. In the months since it launched “Message to Scientology,” Project Chanology has employed a variety of tactics, including pickets, pranks, and propaganda that ranges from the purely informative to the ferociously satirical. It has waxed and waned and waned some more, and yet, improbably, it has endured, evolving into a peculiarly instructive case study in the dynamics of online protest.
Project Chanology may well be the first movement to realize the kind of ad hoc, loosely coupled social activism that many have hoped the ad hoc, loosely coupled architecture of the Internet would engender. But it’s also the first one founded on the principles of the most obnoxious innovation that architecture ever produced: trolling.

The problem is when the campaign against something comes across as sinister as the thing itself is perceived as being. The key to making any decision large or small is to use your innate intelligence and your education, and the key to making our decisions better is to campaign for better education to make those decisions from an informed basis.
Anonymous? I recognise that voice.
i think the craziest thing is that this started on 4chan on /b of all places! But good on them, even though it’s hard to believe that they stopped insulting and disgusting everyone long enough to do anything.
back again, that was a great article, thanks for the link! I’d only ever read the wiki.
Scientology is perfectly resonable! look at some of the founder members. The Easter bunny. Santa Claus. Both of which use alias’ to protect themselves from any back lash. And the latter using his enormous wealth (obtained from Elf opression, forcing them to work in his Lapland sweat shops), to buy his way to greater enlightenment/position within the faith. Oh hang on this could be Catholisism i am talking about,
i smile from ear to ear
Makes sense..
Human supression caused by society needs to stop..
Hmmmm… It’s paradox after paradox with you guys, eh..? Whilst I really detest the cowardice of trolling and the global effect on it has on people just wanting a quiet life and having it disrupted so that some bored happy-slapping arsehole teenager and his 2 dum and dumber buddies can have a laugh at someone spottier than themselves, someone needs to keep this Scientology juggernaut in the public eye. And riducule it too for what it is – a set up by a narcissistic failure bent on being a legend in his own lunchtime. But maybe more balanced features and publicity are required, so that fuel isn’t squirted onto the fire. And remember guys, these freaks are big business. And drug-pushers stop at nothing.
And I LOVE Derren’s Tom Cruise poster – because I hate it so much. The skin texture, the fake smile with the teeth perfectly sat on the bottom lip – with the little hints that they are veneers. You don’t miss a trick, do you, Derren? Class.
The Church of Scientology’s main problem is grammar, or so I found:

Chanology is fail and has been since it stopped being lulzy. The only people who actually still care are moralfags and newfags. People lost sight of the true purpose of chanology, which was to troll the shit out of the cult for teh funny. But then people started doing it to feel like white knights instead of for the lulz.
That it continues to this day it a testament to the human disposition to fail consistantly.
V
Lisa Mcpherson is all Im saying on the subject
Woooah, these guys scare me…
Just because Stephen Hawking can’t work out the Grand Unified Theory there’s no need for him to throw a little tantrum.
i kind ofthis and the voice i know uuuuuuuuuuu!LOL!
,em
It is, I know, a thorn in the side of a lot of Anons that most of the people protesting Scientology under the green flag adopted Anonymity specifically with this purpose in mind. But so it goes.
And JayKay, interesting choice of words! You may have your religions muddled!

Never had heard from that Anonymous group I have to say. There’s not that much going on in the media regarding scientology here. Enough other filthy stuff though.
Was I the only one who got bored about 45 seconds into that?

Ok, yeah it was funny when it was teh lulz. But it’s not a bad thing that some people went “hang on, the is actually a problem that needs fixing”. Go cry your little /b/tard eyes out on that board if you have a problem with it.
kthxdie.
lol, 4chan.
Cool
And yes… Knowledge is free if you know where to look.
I thought this was rather well filmed, very much like a V for Vendetta promo vid (don’t they wear those masks?).

great article, but why’ve you linked to Page 2 of it?
Thanks for the link to this. My spouse, a hacker, was unable to clearly explain the 4chan/anon/I haz cheezburger (he owns a T-shirt with stuff written that way on it) connections.
The Cruise video I hadn’t seen before. I feel so sorry for him. He’s so trapped in it. At the same time, he sounds like people caught in other religions too.
Overall, the take-down of CoS will have to come from a more thoughtful place.
rules no. 1 and 2 newfags!
Thanks for the link. Though I yet not visited it yet but after reading these kind of strong comments I have to check it out once. So let’s check it out
Hmm,
I had an idea a little while ago, nothing too great (they never are) but may help this movement a little… hmm.
It’s one of those things I started, but never actually finished. So many distractions in this damn world.
Will see.

ib4 any more /b/tards
I’m not quite sure why I found seeing /b/tards on the Derren blog so incredibly funny, but I haven’t laughed like that for days. Props for for linking this, I’m surprised Scilon enturbulators haven’t started trolling the comments yet. You’re Fair Game now Derren.
Oh god… If theres anything that I hate more than /b/tards, its /b/tards who think they have a purpose. Still, I can’t believe Scientology have been getting away with it for so long

The people who went around thinking “OMG GUISE WE CAN CHANGE TEH WORLD” are the ones missing the point, and the ones who missed the point from the off. It was never about changing the world, or even helping anyone. It was, as everything to do with anonymous is, for the lulz, amusement and for shits and giggles. It stopping being funny after people starting taking it seriously and started trying to be credible.
“Oh no, you can’t DDOS the website or stream endless blank faxes. That’s wrong”
So?
Chanology was about pissing people off, break their websites and Rickroll their phone lines. Nothing more.
Then the moralfaggotry started…..
