Quite often people tend to set themselves off on an idea in pursuit of a mental destination without knowing where they might end up half way through. The idea that if you can get from A to B in your though process means you have a perfectly valid idea is the backbone of any belief system and is what fuels conspiracy theorists.

DYTWYTYT – is the perfect antidote – it helps show up the holes in the way you actually form opinions. By breaking things down in to smaller elements we can analyze individual ideas before re-constructing them to form bigger “well-formed” thoughts.

It’s very much a pop-philosophy book and it’s quiz style can be a little grating at times but in general it’s ideal for all of you who wish to improve your thinking and idea analysis – and for me improve my debating skills – not that arguing with Derren Brown is ever fruitful, or worthwhile as I’ve managed to lose several heated debates without him uttering a word.

Thanks for the fresh news from the recommendation station!

There’s also a great book by Massimo Piattelli–Palmarini called ‘Inevitable Illusions’ that you’ve probably heard of ages ago, rendering this patronising and pointless in equally gigantic dollops.

It’s not perfect (what is?) and his style is a little aggressive in places, but it’s still a blinkin’ fascinating popular examination of cognitive illusions.

I prefer learning by experience (as usual). Works better for me, and will leave me the freedom so much more to fool around with ideas/thoughts whatever way I want. My ideas are not always that shaped .. I start very vague and rough .. and just work it while going. My garden .. I had a rough idea about it .. and the bases indeed is still as in the beginning … I just add things here and there. My largest project, the super pool, was not in my initial idea … just popped up while staring at this piece of land on the side .. and the fact that I probably would do it manually … did not scare me of … the one that thinks up the ideas ..wants the stuff .. is no the one who is going to do it … I’m the man as well who gives into his partner’s wishes .. Unknown male visitors always think I want them to get to work here .. they normally presume it’s my partner who is doing the work outside. I at times will leave them in that … It’s quite entertaining.

Anyhow .. my way of thinking while working outside is indeed not always normal/logic .. I need to step out of it now and then to keep a good focus on things .. otherwise weird foolish things happen (trust me .. I even scratch my own head now and then … if I see some things …. WHY did I not see it????). I’m very happy I dont have a wining/constantly criticizing person on top of me … that would take the fun out of my work outside for sure .. I myself are way more nice to my other self … I like learning this way .. not everytihng will be perfect, but hey … I could have made it perfect .. but that woud have take out the fun of making it the first couple of years for sure. Later improvements will be done now and then. I improve myself with time.

Letting ideas sink into your mind and take a look at it from several sides .. from several states .. that’s another way I like doing things. Fall and winter are perfect for this when it comes to working outside.
I like thinking about things. Getting my butt to work .. that’s not always that easy but I learned to ignore myself in this area (again) after having been down for a while to see to my self in this area…. For me it does not work .. I wont do anything anymore then .. I may not sink into my not feeling like doing this or that too much .. I need to keep it vague .. I shall not feel it .. I may know that I dont feel like doing it .. but I shall not feel it …

I learn better if I run into things myself. Those things I have to see/feel myself … most of the time .. although I smarten up in this area a bit now and then … (will never stop thinking for myself though .. so if I still dont see it … )

Developing ideas over time can be nice .. your idea developing self down under wlll check things here and there even when your other self is not on to this idea at all .. and things/facts and stuff get stored in the right department for later use, or are being added directly to the idea.

Although I would be concerned about whether or not this is a bit patronising or “airy-fairy” it does sound rather interesting – thanks for drawing it to our attention Phillis! I will look into getting a copy, I think. Thanks again x
