This site needs you!

Thank you to everyone who submitted a portfolio for the re-design of the website, after much deliberation we now have a team onboard and are very happy with the initial results.

In the meantime we are in the process of creating a database of links for the new site. This will hopefully work towards making the site a genuinely valuable resource for all things "Derren".

In addition to links that have been suggested by us, we also want user-submitted content so are calling on any of you who know of interesting web articles or research that come under the broad categories of Pseudo-Science, Magic or Psychology to submit them (for approval) to links@derrenbrown.co.uk.

When submitting links please give a brief description of the content and please, no links to private businesses or training programmes this is for research purposes only.

Thanking you muchly

Specialist treat items to smile your face to!

Firstly, i'm sure you'll all love to know that Derren has AT LAST got a little time off to relax and do some painting. Expect a variety of paint colours on canvasses to be added to the artwork pages very soon.

Secondly, Channel 4 have given the go-ahead for a new DVD box-set, it will contain four of the previous specials but at this stage no-one knows which four it will be. I'll keep you posted when I know more.

Lastly, the "Mind Reader:Evening of Wonders" live show at the Garrick theatre in London's busy west-end was filmed in it's last week. Hopefully this will be aired on Channel 4 later in the year.

Web design update

Thanks to all the applicants. We'll be sending out some emails this week.

Added/Updated: 26th May 2008

Are you a talented web designer?

It's been a while since derrenbrown.co.uk was launched and Derren thinks it's about time it had a bit of a face lift and start afresh.

The web geniuses that are Nameless are already looking into it though Derren is also interested in seeing what other talent in the web world there is out there.

We're looking for a web designer/agency that would be happy to work pro-bono and could really see the success of working with Derrenbrown.co.uk raise their professional profiles. If you're up for it then please submit a portfolio, PDF or your own website (ideally with a few URLs which you think show off your talents the best) to:

email removed.

Please - professional designers only or if you're a recent grad with exceptional talent and a few projects under your belt already then we're interested in hearing from you too. Flash, some action-scripting, CSS, HTML all that malarky is essential as is the ability to carry the project from concept to completed working website with no bugs!

Second coming

For anyone confused as to why Derren would seem to be 'coming out' again, and this time to the tabloids: the article in the Sun yesterday was something of a suprise. Derren had answered a couple of questions from a Sun journalist within a half-hour interview about the TV series, that were concerned with why he discreetly mentioned all that man-on-man business in the Independent a few months ago. Derren politely answered that it was a necessary evil: not really anyone's business, but if you don't do it then it becomes perceived as a secret. The Sun then printed this as if Derren had chosen to come out there and then to them, complete with 'Exclusive' across the top of the article. As if. Other papers then picked up on this, and suddenly it was new news.

So, yes, for those who thought it was a bit odd and tacky, it was.

New book

Derren will hopefully have a new book out by Christmas featuring loads of his fantastic portrait paintings. Now who wouldn't want to see that in their stocking? More info as soon as we have some.

What was in the box?

An audience member managed to win £5000 during Derren's live show in Belfast.

For those of you who have seen the show you'll know how the "what's in the box?" section works. As it happens the guy who won was celebrating his birthday which Derren knew, obviously. Which is why he let him win, obviously...

Hastings

Dear anyone who booked for Hastings,

I'm so sorry to get ill, it had been brewing for a while and I had absolutely no voice that night. Because of this, I am having to skip signings for a few nights until my throat is better. Please don't email asking if I'll be signing on such-and-such a night, there'll be no way of knowing until the time comes.

I believe we're aiming to do an extra date at Hastings on April 17th, this should be confirmed very soon.

Meawhile, sorry to anyone else hoping to catch me for signing, and to anyone whose evening was seriously buggered up by us having to pull the show.

Meanwhile, I must concentrate on getting though the current shows... And I hope you enjoy them.

Bestest wishes,

Derren. X

"On The Road" News

As most of you know Derren is once again on the road with his hugely successful UK tour; "An Evening of Wonders." If you weren't lucky enough to catch it the first time around why not check out the tour dates to see if he's in a town near you.

Some of you will be familiar with the show and would agree the Oracle act is a mind blowing finale amongst a feast of magic and psychological delights. Due to the level of audience participation the act can throw up some unexpected, shocking and often down right cheeky results. Without giving too much away we can exclusively reveal Derren can now add 'Match-Maker' to his repertoire due to a surprise marriage proposal during the Norwich show. Congratulations to Dave and Lucy and we wish you the very best of luck for the future. For those who haven't seen the show you'll have to watch one to work out how he managed it. And before you ask, the answer is yes, Derren has bought a new hat. Watch out Cilla!

Derren and the crew would also like to thank to Sean, Lee, Matt and Ryan and the rest of the staff at the Saint Giles House hotel for all their hospitality, great steaks and the best Eggs-Benedict ever.

Mypace Update

For anyone who is wondering what happened to the Derren Brown MySpace page, we have had to have it closed down. It was run by fans, and although they maintained it well (it was a great site), they would not clarify on the page that it was a tribute site. Clearly many, many people had joined thinking they were in contact with Derren. Secondly, a number of people who had sent private messages to the page owner (presumably thinking he was DB) then found themselves in an email correspondence with someone posing as Derren. It seemed to be that whoever was running the site was enjoying this as a prank. Still, hoping that it was someone else who had managed to infiltrate the system rather than the page owner who was passing himself off as DB, we tried for a long time to enter into a dialogue with the owner to sort out all the above issues and get to the bottom of the fraudulent emails. We really wanted to find a way of keeping the site running and not be forced to close it. However, the owner of the page was unresponsive, despite our attempts to be as helpful and patient as possible. In the end we had to have it closed.

We're more than aware that our own news page has been woefully out-of-date. Coops has committed himself to keeping it as updated as possible from now on, so watch this space and send him an admonishing email if he slips too far behind.

PLEASE NOTE: Derren does not, never has, and is very unlikely to, own a page on MySpace, Facebook or any other similar site. If he ever decides to go that route, we'll make it very clear on this site that he's done so. For now, anyone posing as him on these sites is a fake, regardless of what 'proof' is offered in emails. Please contact Coops or Derren's management through this site if you have any evidence of people claiming to be him in emails and so on. And for anyone thinking if starting a tribute site, please clarify its status with a permanent headline such as "THIS IS A TRIBUTE SITE. IT IS NOT RUN BY DERREN AND HE CANNOT BE CONTACTED THROUGH IT". It'll also cut down on the amount of shivering nutters who'll want to get in touch with you.

Many thanks.

Derren's NOT On MySpace

It has come to our attention that there are people claiming to be (and posing as) Derren on a number of "social networking" sites such as MySpace.

We would like to inform you that Derren has never and will never use any of these sites (e.g. MySpace, Facebook, BeBo, etc).

One individual in particular has emailed members of the public posing as Derren. We would like to make it clear that this practice is illegal and we are considering legal action against that person.

If anyone has had correspondence with any of these people pretending to be Derren, please email any evidence to legal@derrenbrown.co.uk

Thanks.

Trick Or Treat

Derren's new series, called "Derren Brown: Trick or Treat" will air from mid-April on Channel 4. The current start date is April 13th, though this may change.

Derren was eager to do something a bit different from "Trick of the Mind", and this new show has already attracted some press attention from the tabloids.

The Daily Mirror secretly followed Derren and his crew out to Marrakech a few weeks ago after they were tipped off that filming was taking place for the new show. They went out with the aim of discovering a scam, or somehow showing that the whole thing was a set-up.

After filming had finished and they realised they didn't have the exposure story they were hoping for, the journalistic team introduced themselves to Derren's crew and owned up.

The Mirror has since interviewed the participant used in the show and is aiming to print a feature regarding the whole escapade when the series starts to air. Should be a fun read.

Next TV Work

"Something Wicked This Way Comes", which won the Olivier Award for Best Entertainment, has been filmed and should air over the next couple of months.

For those who have seen the live show, the subliminal film/chair routine and the sequence with the Rhine cards have been removed to fit into the 90 minute slot. After much discussion, the glass sequence HAS made it into the show.

Derren is also now working on the next series which should air Spring 2007.

Book

Derren has just about finished writing "Tricks of the Mind", his first book for the general public. It is due to be released at the start of November and can be pre-ordered from Amazon.

It is an introduction to Derren's main areas of skill or interest: magic, hypnosis, non-verbal communication, memory work, and his sceptical approach to religion and the paranormal.

Site wins Yahoo Award

Delighted to see that this website has won the hugely-coveted Yahoo "Finds of 2005" Award in the TV category, beating both Ricky Gervais' "Extras" site ("hugely inferior") and the site for "Lost" ("excruciating"). Hearing about the award, I've just had a look at the site, and I do have to say that I agree with them: it is superb.

"Not another award, Derren!", you say. Hang on, I reply, I couldn't (actually could) have done it all myself. Some recognition must go, in a manner of speaking, to Nameless UK, who provided some technical assistance in designing and creating this website, which could not have happened without me. I did make my own site, as a student, on FrontPage, which basically had the same stuff on it, and which I was told was pretty bloody good, but it's this current site which has actually picked up the award. So in that sense well done to them.

So for any other people who wish to email saying they find the site obscure or difficult to navigate, please attach a list of your own awards and years in which they were won. Thank you. I'm off to make room on my trophy shelves. Might put it next to 'Arena Man of the Year 2004', don't know.

THE HEIST -

The current date proposed by C4 for Derren's new special is Wednesday January 4th 2006 at 9pm. This is of course subject to change.

"Derren Brown: The Heist" sees the "devil-bearded mind-fiddler" (Zoo Mag) using his unpleasant skills to persuade some middle-management businessmen and women into stealing a hundred thousand pounds in what they believe is a genuine (and supposedly unfilmed) armed robbery. The participants believe that they are taking part in a seminar where Derren teaches his skills, and a follow-up documentary to see how they're getting on.

The participants in the show also unwittingly take part in a re-construction of the famous 1960's Obedience experiment by Stanley Milgram: a harrowing demonstration of people's readiness to deliver apparently lethal electric shocks to a human being, merely because a man in a white coat tells them to. Reference: http://www.stanleymilgram.com/milgram.php

The show will be as dramatic and thought-provoking as you should by now have come to expect from The Great One.

Flash Website Shortlisted for BIMA Award

You'll not be surprised to know that this website 'experience' (and it is an experience) is up for a BIMA award ("British Interactive Media Association") in the entertainment category.

Other sites nominated for awards include EddieIzzard.com and Christian Aid week. Although I am running out of award space on my shelf and another award would be inconvenient for both me and my cleaners, I do think I probably deserve it as clearly this site takes both Izzard and Christian Aid squarely up the arse.

Now don't try and go to the BIMA site and vote: you have to be a BIMA member, which is a title reserved for some of the most staggeringly intelligent, uncompromisingly attractive and trouser-fillingly charming men and women in this land.

Derren's New Single

Well, not quite.

Derren has recently recorded with The Palers' Project, who describe themselves as a "a loose international collective of fans of the band Procol Harum, who record the songs of Gary Brooker, Matthew Fisher, Robin Trower and Keith Reid for their own and others' pleasure".

You can buy the very limited release CD from http://www.palersproject.com/, and listen to short excerpts (Derren recites the dark poem "Glimpses of Nirvana" on the album).
