Talking of US National Anthems, Here’s a little known fact. The tune to our anthem “God save the queen ” was penned by an American. I’m imagining someone in the US said to him “Give them a dull forgettable dirge that’s almost instantly forgettable, we don’t want them upstaging us at sporting events”!

Also, I’m all for the removal of God from daily life, but when a group starts to try to remove a staple of pride steeped in centuries of tradition with a cheesy pop song barely 25 years old, I can’t help but think you’re taking the piss.

If you’re seriously that concerned about a national anthem being fashionable and up to date, why not make the anthem whatever’s number one on the iTunes chart that week?

If it contains a religious reference, you can just skip it that week.

Here’s a thing. The tune to the national anthem was not written by an American. No one knows who it was written by. Give that about 140 composers, including Beethoven, Haydn, Bach, Liszt, Brahms, Johann Strauss, etc., have used the tune in their compositions then it’s extremely unlikely that an American had anything to do with it. – just consider the dates.

I find that song depressive .. it’s not the words .. it’s the tone of voice and the music itself .. but hey .. I dont care what brittain will choose to represent them … Maybe it fits the brits .. who knows. I dont find it a bad song, but with the olympics … nah … national anthem .. nah … I like hearing you mumble … it’s so cute .. (we playback, we don’t mumble .. for obvious reasons .. … )

RS – My original source was someone DJing on classic FM, but I should have known better than to trust a DJ for facts… on looking into it further it would appear the US connection is bogus:

God save the queen is only supposed to be played when a member of the Royal family are in attendence and at all other time Land of hope and glory should be played,

So the origional comment is of an uneducated (or misinformed ) person
