We, the people of Britain, feel that our current National Anthem has lost a bit of its sparkle.  When we are confronted by the rare occasion of us winning a medal at the Olympics, we all have to mumble through “God Save The Queen”, well God help us!  We would thereby like to table the suggestion that we change the National Anthem to something more modern and appropriate and that will re-invigorate our pride.  What we specifically want to see, is that the National Anthem be changed in favour of “Gold” by Spandau Ballet.

Petition (Thanks Houdinia)

This is very fishy . . I love this song . . Gold . !! ?? National Anthem . .? Queen . .??

What was the Rob Queen thing about . ?? He surely can’t rob the queen of her Gold . ??

And he’s mentioned God again as well . . . . .

Imagine singing GOLD at one of her birthdays or something . .lol . .

Darryl says:

Sorry, totally do not agree with this one. I don’t believe in “God” but Spandau Ballet? Really? LOL Now a mash up 3 Lions sung by The Proclaimers, The Corrs and Tom Jones I might sign up for that!

Sung in the style of Trevor and Simon on Going Live?
I’m sure they sang ‘Gold’ during the end of program quiz. Said quiz was based on gold prospecting?
Maybe I was on drugs.
I’m signing this 😀

Hiheels says:

#You’re indestructibuuuuuu-uuuuul (artistic licence with spelling for singing along purposes).

Anyhoo, yep works a treat in the Olympian context, but think it through peeps, this would be used on other occasions too if it were our permanent anthem and we don’t want to end up looking silly.

I propose “Where Be the Blackbird?”

August 30, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Bluebottle says:

Signed, though I’d prefer something with more of a beat to it. A Queen track mayhap?

I’d prefer the themesong of The Archers.

August 30, 2009 at 10:20 pm
Siobhan says:

I always thought that Rule Britannia was the UK national anthem!!

So if the queen was to die, then do you just change from ‘Queen’ to ‘King’?

I didn’t vote, what with not being English its not really up to me… but I do prefer the Spandau Ballet…

JayKay says:

In my head, I am still that age. How dare things move on from the 80s! I blinked and woke up in my 40s. As for the anthem… does it all have to revolve around the Olympics? Or is it a wee dig at the crown and the establishment and the higher ups running away with our money this year in the biggest worldwide heist the planet has known? We have the power to know we’re indestructible – always believe…

Wow. Not only is this song a good’n to sing at the end of a long DofE [Duke of Edinburgh’s award] expedition, but for it to be played on the odd occasion when we win a gold medal? Priceless ;D

That would literally make me interested in anything that the National Anthem is sang (is it sang? or sung? or singed? Oh god D:) at.

I’ve really enjoyed making videos for webmasters. In the most recent recording session, we decided that it would be fun to talk about some of the “hidden gems” of Google: features, products, or tips that you might not know about, but you might like

flapjack says:

Talking of US National Anthems, Here’s a little known fact. The tune to our anthem “God save the queen ” was penned by an American. I’m imagining someone in the US said to him “Give them a dull forgettable dirge that’s almost instantly forgettable, we don’t want them upstaging us at sporting events”!
They needn’t have worried!
80’s power ballads, interesting choice.
“you’re indestructable”… hmmm there’s a thought, but I wouldn’t like to encourage other nations to test that theory!
Could we use the Sex Pistols version of “God Save the Queen”… just once for a laugh? 2012 Olympics maybe?

August 31, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Daniel Bethany says:

I think the National Anthem should be “God Save The Queen.”

By the Sex Pistols.

Spandau Ballet… pah! you obviously weren’t a punk!

Baxta76 says:

Did anyone hear the Belgium national anthem, performed at Spa yesterday, before the Grand Prix?
It was a kind of a mad freaky jazz number… Nice.
All we need is Jamie Cullum to sing the British anthem from now on, and it’ll start to sound cool.

python says:

yh,thats a much better anthem lol

August 31, 2009 at 1:10 pm
RS says:

Flapjack, when you say it was penned by an American, can you provide a source for that fact?

Also, I’m all for the removal of God from daily life, but when a group starts to try to remove a staple of pride steeped in centuries of tradition with a cheesy pop song barely 25 years old, I can’t help but think you’re taking the piss.

If you’re seriously that concerned about a national anthem being fashionable and up to date, why not make the anthem whatever’s number one on the iTunes chart that week?

If it contains a religious reference, you can just skip it that week.

August 31, 2009 at 1:22 pm

@ Flapjack – Omg, I love that last idea! 😀

kodabar says:

Here’s a thing. The tune to the national anthem was not written by an American. No one knows who it was written by. Give that about 140 composers, including Beethoven, Haydn, Bach, Liszt, Brahms, Johann Strauss, etc., have used the tune in their compositions then it’s extremely unlikely that an American had anything to do with it. – just consider the dates.

Ms G says:

I find that song depressive .. it’s not the words .. it’s the tone of voice and the music itself .. but hey .. I dont care what brittain will choose to represent them … Maybe it fits the brits .. who knows. I dont find it a bad song, but with the olympics … nah … national anthem .. nah … I like hearing you mumble … it’s so cute .. (we playback, we don’t mumble .. for obvious reasons .. … )

August 31, 2009 at 4:55 pm
flapjack says:

RS – My original source was someone DJing on classic FM, but I should have known better than to trust a DJ for facts… on looking into it further it would appear the US connection is bogus:
“Scholes’ analysis includes mention of “untenable” and “doubtful” claims, as well as “an American misattribution”.”
I think the DJ might have also got confused with this…,_'Tis_of_Thee
But wherever it came from I still stand by the fact that as National anthems go it’s a bit of a dismal durge, and has a highly un-PC second verse! Tradition or not, I say let the Americans have it… I’ll stick with the Sex Pistols version 😀

“her majesty’s a pretty nice grrl, but she doesnt have a lot to say.
her majesty’s a pretty nice grrl, but she changes from day to day.

Wait, forget that last “terrible song” comment…. OK, so I listened to the song WITHOUT watching the horrible 80’s video…. It’s not as bad as my first impression of it! I can dig it…. That would be awesome. I say Go For It!

Hang on a moe !!!
As I beleve it the official national anthem of England is Land of hope and glory not God save the queen !
God save the queen is only supposed to be played when a member of the Royal family are in attendence and at all other time Land of hope and glory should be played,

So the origional comment is of an uneducated (or misinformed ) person
