Yes I know I’m late on this one – so shoot me. I woke up this morning at 4am with no internet and it took me an hour to calm down. After a warm pint of cherry coke, a good itch and a scouring of the internet I found this article. Personally I think graphic design like this is criminal but Derren has insisted it “is all part of the show”.

Wow!! Derren in white – that’s just amazing image. Derren vs Joe? I suppose I know who would be the winner 😉

The Beaufort Hotel! Thats one of my mates locals! Gah !! She’ll be so pi**ed that she missed the chance to see Derren… and not heckle the medium!

January 23, 2009 at 11:15 am

This documentary sounds great, I really hope it doesn’t pull any punches though. That happens all too frequently.

Berber Anna says:

*grins* Mentalist vs medium, hm? Interesting — will be a cool thing to watch, I think.

It’s funny how the writer of that article seems entirely convinced of the medium’s psychic powers…

Sadun Kal says:

Then maybe what’s criminal is the show itself…

But what’s “criminal” anyway? Is religion also criminal?

Harry says:

“Last year, he featured in the national newspapers after claiming he knew the whereabouts of missing schoolgirl Shannon Matthews nearly a week before the police found her.”

That it? Would the article not say whether or not he was right??? 50 euro (about 1200 sterling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) says it was a very bad miss.

January 23, 2009 at 11:52 am
C00 says:

Either a miss, or he is the one who put her there.
So, what I understand from the text is that they are doing a documentary together? How is that even possible? I’m pretty sure Derren would at some point try to expose him, and Joe would be aware of this, right?
What am I missing?

Oh, I am looking forward to this!
Please give us plenty of notice, there are certain people I know who MUST watch it! They are new Derren fans after Evening of Wonders, and they insist they “see dead people”.

I am going to enjoy this!!!

Major kudos on the white suit.

That is all.

Lafayette says:

The new series will be called Power and Brown (Deceased).

[and that’s not a threat, or even a promise, just a dodgy cultural reference]

Katherine says:

Like the white suit – avenging angel style bring fraudulent mediums to book (I hope). Will be reserving a space in my diary for this, whenever it is.

I sure HOPE that this is somehow going to be viewable for us people who live in other continents.

And Derren was there to observe Joe, so no psychic duet .. too bad. The audience will have had a nice evening I guess.

I’d been very uplifted already if I’d been living in the UK. All this nice stuff that is on its way! Something to look forward to.

When will it be shown? Looking forward to it.

As for the photo of Derren (white suit) – thats a really really old photo, isn’t it? Why are they using such an old photo of him?

Thanks for posting the link to my site, we have much more about Joe there.
Lets hope the documentary will take a look at some of his previous actions

John from Liverpool says:

Not so Instant Karma. So the guy who did a “pay per view Seance” to get in touch with John Lennon, may now be exposed for what he really is well done Derren, for exposing these guys who “talk to dead people . Cant wait to see the programme

January 26, 2009 at 10:15 am
Lafayette says:

I suspect the affair will be gentler than some posters might expect – more a “you claim to do this with magic powers, I claim to do it without, let’s see who fair better” than a bit of redundant unmasking.

Sara says:

You and me both Phillis. Why do people still use Zapf Chancery as a typeface…..WHY? It’s just criminal! We need the bad design police again! And don’t you just hate those people that say it’s post-ironic!

You know he looks like the late Hunter S. Thompson?

Lazy Susan says:

Hi – Love the blog. Well done to one and all involved. Hoping you can help me with a little something.
I was wondering if Derren has ever investigated the medium John Edward. A colleague of mine at work is besotted with the man and has bought tickets to go see his show when he comes here to Ireland in the Autumn. I have tried (unsuccessfully) to convince her that its all a load of yankee doodle dandy…but alas she’s convinced he’ll have messages for her and her hubby (equally gullible believer) from loved ones who have died etc…
I told her Derren has exposed many like this fellow and shown them to be nothing but money making fraudsters who are just playing with the highly emotional silly people like her but she is not for turning. I said to her today I was going to send a note to you guys to see if you had anything in the war closet there that I could use to try to convince her to be more sceptical of Mr. Edward.
Can you help? Many thanks.
Take care.
Lazy Susan

The one problem I have is if I were dead, then why the fuck would I want to communicate through a middle age scouser? I’d prefer someone like Stephen Fry

Just watched the show in question… I found the ending fantastic. As the credits came up i was in fits of laughter! Good Man Derren! Joe has alot to answer for!

All the best!!

May 10, 2010 at 11:46 pm
PJR says:

Pre-watching, i was sceptical… but as i watched the first reading Joe did, i was IMPRESSED and questioned my doubts. After the show finished, i went to 4plus1 to watch that first reading back. Whilst it appeared genuine on first viewing, watching it back with the knowledge of the EXTREMELY SUSPICIOUS next door neighbour, im pretty sure the woman being given the reading was acting.. BADLY aswel!! Its amazing what you miss first time round(which is all most of his subjects get when being given a reading), EVEN when being sceptical!

And for all those who disagree, fair enough, but i remain unconvinced that people can speak with the dead! Especially when Derren has displayed techniques which “appear” to achieve this ability, whilst not really doing so!

Keep up the good work Derren

Ray says:

Watched the show tonight, investigating Joe Power. The end allowed viewers to make up their own minds as to whether or not Joe is real or a fake. Not difficult to reach a conclusion! I took a look at Mr Power’s new website. Full of grandiose self promotion, it’s geared to extracting money from vulnerable people, by booking a reading, & distastefully, via premium rate phone numbers, & directly via credit/debit card. He states that his readings are for ‘Entertainment Purposes Only’! For what my opinion is worth, I see no difference between what Joe does, and a fortune teller with crystal ball or deck of cards in a seafront stall!! People who work with vulnerable people have to have an enhanced Criminal Record Bureau background check done on them. Perhaps that shouldn’t apply to Joe as well?

May 12, 2010 at 9:39 pm
Mark says:

In fairness, this is a bloody hard one for Derren to present. Whist I agree he tried to allow some level of balance and not force a conclusion as to the veracity of Mr. Power, including flagging throughout that ‘there could be another conclusion and he could be truly communicating’, it is almost impossible to win when presenting this type of debunking. The debunker can be portrayed as being unfair, mis-editing or unfairly editing the programme and purposely misleading the audience to the conclusion they want. Especially with Derren’s noted mis-direction and psychological tricks, it perhaps can easily be argued by ‘believers’ pointing to Derren’s history and suggest that the overall programme was just along the same lines. That being said, not a bad job altogether!

Richard says:

Joe Power, whatever he believes, is a manipulative fake. Derren Brown had nothing to gain by proving JP this; in fact, they could both have earned fortunes from the first ever televised unequivocal demonstration of true spiritual communication. As usual though, the slightest hint of removing all doubt and JP was putting up all kinds of bogus excuses not to take part. When he finally agreed, his aggression and distortion of the truth in the face of polite but persistent questions, obviously stung by his utter failure in the only reading he could not manipulate, spoke volumes.

The man has no shame.
