I think this is a great idea.
Which one of you will get the highest score?
Great Idea thanks for sharing I’l definately be doing this! 😀
P.S – Great to see you on Aurora last week! wish Id managed to get my pic taken with you tho!
Hey, I found this a year ago, and I thought I was late to the party, otherwise I’d have mentioned it myself! I generated 5020 grains of rice and a vocabulary level of 50. Then I got distracted by Family Guy.
I got an app from those guys on my ipod touch. But I think it’s only available from Cydia, so for people who jailbreaked their iPhones/iPods…
I’v been playing this, it’s sooooo adictive. Genius.
is it a bit like click to donate rice/water etc
by haveign a look at the rice i would say there is about 89 0r 90 grains of rice in that picture am i right am i huh huh
Good advertising, I love that site! Remember there are loads of challenges, not just words.
Level 37 was today’s high score. Hmph.
Great fun. I failed at 180 though. It’s kinda hard to talk on the phone and answer the questions! What a thoughtful idea. Tar. I may actually become addicted to it.
great cause and concept, shame the answers to questions are invariably incorrect – mostly the answers are associations, rather than definitions. Got annoyed and gave up. Maybe I’m just a pedant.
I used to play it quite often about a year ago, I’ll definitely go back to it
Here’s a similar one –> www(dot)freepoverty(dot)com. Instead of rice you donate water cups for your geographical knowledge
I love this game, on top of all the mind-expanding charity fun there’s the added game of chance as to which voice you’ll get doing the pronunciations. About two thirds of the time it’s some horrible nasal American male voice, but for that other glorious third you get a lady who often sounds as if she’s bordering on orgasmic.
If you’re really lucky you might get to hear her say ‘touchwood’.
what is the rice game? guess how many there is?
Oh dear 60 points ;o( Might have another go in a bit.
Oh dear, it is addictive! But it is for a good cause. I gave it a rest at 1080. Lots of old Scottish and Norse words in there. Good fun.
Hm … it’s not really .. erm .. proper to have the dictionary next to you huh? And for how long does it go on man … I stopped .. For those who like to test their word-archive (up there or in that book) … can be fun.
It’s a weird site.
Is Brown going to give you an exam on the words in due time?
Ive just donated 1000 😀 and learnt a load of new words, hurrah!
thats my good deed for the day, thanks coops
I stopped when I gaveded 1000 grains of rice ;D
Was a good idea. I feel like i’ve done something good(ish).
Got to level 56 and then got annoyed with it after gaining over 500 grains! Bah!
I’ll go back to it later
was playing it last week. It’s really addictive, the famous artists subject is quite fun though. Give it go!
OK Mr barrel maker. I had fun with this but when my eyes started stinging, I got to 4000 grains of rice, and learned that flange=rim I figured it was time to give it a rest and have a nap….
Just did 3000
I got to level 50 but after a while my eyes really started to smart, so I had to give it a rest. Great fun though!
rcie?! ooh, wait, is that a typo or an arg clue… must not get paranoid… but what could it mean?!
I enjoyed donating the standard 1,000 grains… will also send it round the office 😀
Merci, Mr C!
I’ve been playing this for a while… it’s a really good idea, fun, and you get to learn some awesome new words and do a little bit to help out.
Thanks Mr Coops!
bloody hell how addicitve is this?????!?!?!??! *grins*
i donated 300 grains, not much i know but atleast i did some
Done my first thousand… will get back to it when I’m looking for a timefiller.
Rice is nice when your hungry and want 2,000 of something……..
I discovered this yesterday. It’s an amazing idea!
i saw this post by stephen fry a couple of days ago, such a good post.
7000 grains of rice. because i know french
@colinrocks – I wondered the same thing too. But then also wondered if we delve WAY too deep at times! 😉
Thanks for posting this Coops.
I just got to 3000 grains and only managed level 35 at my highest point, I is dumb, lol.
My mind isn’t up to much recently and it started to give in, so I decided to stop for now.
I have put a link on my facebook though, so hopefully other peeps will get involved too.
Pax, amor et concordia.
How is this in any way a good cause? It’s just another internet meme tugging on your heartstrings.
I would happily sign a petition to give ALL available rice to help end hunger. If the ‘sponsors’ have spare money to give to charity, why don’t they just GIVE it instead of getting us to play silly games?
If the game was actually something productive, could help produce more rice or make some money, then it would be ok – but it’s just a waste of time. They want me to waste my time with word games in exchange for them donating a little bit of money which they could just give anyway!
And they could easily make a much better job of selling the advertising space, which would at least be a valid way of making money to give to the charity. But they don’t because – it’s just a bunch of cock.
I started playing this AGES ago and I got really curious about what happens after you reach 10,000 grains. Its not exciting. Here’s a screenshot: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v375/Midnight_Winds/freerice.jpg
Yes I have no life, and yes, my vocab level sucked.

You’re all really clever. Sorry: cLevA. I was secretly proud of my 37 score. 60 is just inhuman! In a wonderful way, of course. Well done you eloquent people
@Mathew. Calm down, it’s just a fun way to raise awareness. Yeah they probably could just give all the rice straight to African villages, but it would mean that I’d have to sit in work for the next three hours with no fun way of wasting time. It’s just a wee game, not doing anyone any harm! x
im so glad you posted this, its a great idea. good find 😀
my highest level was 50…..i think that technically makes me a dork
I stopped at 2500, because it was becoming unhealthy. but i did the maths one, because that was easier for me (:
@Dmaco – then that makes us dorks together!! 😀
I was also curious about the 10,000 mark and played up until that point. I’m very tired now!
Oooh, level 39, and I shocked myself at how good my English was! Fab game!
Oh nice one! I spent a ridiculous amount of time playing this about eighteen months ago.
I thought it was great to be able to waste great swathes of time in the guise of testing your knowledge and acquiring a nice warm glow of altruism too!
It’s nice to find an amusing form of procrastination that actually serves a useful purpose!
Oh this is sooo addictive, I’m on 4620 grains at the moment, I may be here for a bit…
If he had the time and inclination Derren would score the highest. I stopped at 300 because I have been awake for about 30 hours and am waiting for normal bedtime to come….
I just donated 1 rice thingy. Good for the tax stuff end of the year.
Oh, for god sake, I donate to charity, I give money (and yes, they still will have to buy the rice but hey …).
And awareness? We already that. It’s been all over the news for years already .. already since I was a kid.
Nah, it’s a good site, but hey…
Now then … who wishes to donate one of those round thingies to me … I’ll give you riddles and you have to pay for each riddle one of those round thingies to me. I think that’s only fair, I mean .. riddles dont come cheap or easy .. I have to work my mind to give mental satisfaction to you (ow .. that’s sounds intriguing, doesn’t it?)
Okay .. just donate the freaking rice then .. have it your … Coops way then!
I snif a complot here … it’s going to Coopie’s account. Did you notice how he put in the competing stimuli?
Def. Brown Towers complot.
What happened to Coops by the way?
@Tutti Frutti – I thought it was an incentive too. Hmmm. However, life takes over and the domestics need dealt with!
OK I’ve got as far as 10210 grains of rice on this round which added to my previous score of 1000 on english vocab ain’t so bad.
(I is got that score by doing the questions what is all about inglish grammer!) I was better at French than I thought I was and my Art history ain’t bad either!
My world geography’s crap though… kept confusing Iran and Iraq which means I should use this knowledge and run for President of the USA!
Ah hang on a second, are we scoring this as a levels thing or a number of grains of rice banked thing? I think I need to go back to the drawing board…
Officially I have no life! Got up to level 60 and thought i’d keep bashing away, but nowt happened and just kept getting up there again and again and coming back down. Forgot to look before I gave in finally, but last time I looked it was over 2000. It’s not Stephen Fry’s standards, but I’m not Stephen Fry. Thank Gawd for teh abundance of old Scottish words – even if they’re not how I’ve been spelling them! Now, I can finally fetch Mart’s present and card, but I had to apologise to him for missing his birthday at teh stroke of midnight – because of this!!! Hell, it’s for someone’s supper. Good cause. I still hate you for providing us with these addictive posts!
Addictive! Stephen Fry Tweeted this yesterday. i thought I’d do just a couple and then couldn’t stop 😛
I seemed to get more rice grains for a lot less effort and time earlier though, but then I didn’t notice that there were levels to aim for at the time, so Hell knows what I got first time around. Didn’t you get really arsed off when you got one wrong and it stole a level or even two off you?! Especially when you’re on 60 already and it knocks you back to 58 and 57. Jesus, don’t let me back on this tomorrow – which will actually be today, as I stayed on it so long! If I were married, I might be threatened with divorce tonight! I must go sleep. After another bit of birthday cake.
It is a very nice post and It is really interesting game also. I am really gonna play it with my friends soon.
This is a fantastic idea!!!!! Addictive though lol
Thanks Coops x
I’ve just realised, that UV poster code competition might kick off today…
It’s 1st October, and my mother always told me to say ‘Rabbits, Rabbits Rabbits’ on the first day of the month 😮
Might be wishful thinking, but we haven’t heard anything in a while (or at least I haven’t noticed anything!)
– Sadly we’re at the mercy of the Royal Mail at the moment Francis – until everyone has their poster we can’t kick it off – P.
got to 330 – and it was fun but it never seems to end. Great idea though.x
Oh no, I’ve just remembered there are different subjects… Oh no, I feel another rice session coming on… After some shameful cocopops.
@ Phillis – Oh monkeys, I forgot about that.
Looks like you would have been better off using the elderly to hand-deliver the posters…
On second thoughts, they’re probably too busy knitting Shreddies.
@Francis – Aw, my wee granny used to say that too. Aw, that’s made me think of her again… Well, good luck to Derren and the lucky winner tomorrow night. You will be a winner. Derren won’t let you down. No pressure again or anything…
Stuck at home ill and I just spent the last 40 mins doing this. Suprised at just how much German I remembered. Very obsessive! Damn you Coops! (Not really, luv ya..)
Big love <3 xx
thats a damn lovely thing 😀
i played for a while, until i got embarrassed about how many people were looking over my shoulder.
hopefully they’ll click the link too 😀
I shouted out to my son what I was doing to encourage him to come over and help out and when I explained how t works he said, ” Why don’t they just give them the rice!”
Also what about the person having to seperate and count all those rice grains. Seems like it would be easier to just get a machine made that would count them,
I’m itching for another go…
This is brilliant! I’ve already donated 1000 grains of rice, and I want to play more! Fun, and all in a good cause.
My brain hurts but I feel slightly less guilty about this cauliflower cheese And have surprised myself at just how damn good I am and am off to annoy people with my sesquipedalian ways (see what I did there).
should really be doing work but this is great already addicted
carnivore = illusionist ? bah
