SLEEPING on a complex decision may not help you make the best choice after all. So say two studies that question the evidence for unconscious decision-making.

The “unconscious thought” theory for making complex decisions was proposed in a 2006 study by Ap Dijksterhuis at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and colleagues. The team showed volunteers a series of cars and their attributes on a screen, before asking half of them to think carefully about choosing the best car, and the other half to solve anagrams – a distraction technique to allow unconscious processing. Those in the anagram group were more likely to choose the cars with the best attributes, leading the researchers to conclude that it is best to leave tough choices to the unconscious (Science, vol 311, p 1005).

Or you could of course just try reading this.

Meh. Depends what the decision is. I am sure more emotionally based decisions are going to have a different effect than choosing some attributes on cars or anything likewise…

I’d recommend sleep for important decisions. It clears your head a little bit and lets your inner wisdom pop up. On most occasions. all you need to do is give your head space to hear what is important and what is not.

Ofcouse you will have to sleep quite often whereas you have to make an important decision the day after or such … Will you be able to sleep, that’s another question.

Letting dreams or whatever decide for me is def. not an option ofcourse. Letting the thing hoover around in your mind is not that bad at times. Depends what type of decision it is, the topic.

And at times .. whatever you would decide .. neither will be what you would have wished for.

Important decisions … hm …. lots of things that dont seem so important at the time can turn out to have been of huge importance if you look back. So sometimes you just dont know.

Staying close to yourself … which means that you will have to know yourself .. helps. Even if you don’t know where it will bring you at times when you choose for yourself .. it can even seem the less profitable thing to do in some situations … but quite often it indeed was the best choice.

Well if sleep doesn’t help you make decisions it at least cheers me up. If I go to bed feeling all doom and gloom I wake up and things always seem at least a bit better. I like sleep. Its de-stressing. 😀
