The Vatican has warned that our obsession with modern technology, such as the internet and mobile phones, is not leaving people enough time for spiritual pursuits.

Father Federico Lombardi, the Pope’s spokesman, said that without a spiritual life, people risked losing their souls.

“In the age of the cell phone and the internet it is probably more difficult than before to protect silence and to nourish the interior dimension of life,” Father Lombardi told the Vatican television show Octavia Dies. “It is difficult but necessary.”

“There is an interior and spiritual dimension of life that must be guarded and nourished. If it is not, it can become barren to the point of drying up and, indeed, dying,” he added.

What a load of rubbish. Religion seems to work by instilling fear in people, or hell, death, whatever. The internet gives more people than ever information. Although thats just IMHO.

It’s True! I lost my soul while using the free wifi at Starbucks just last week. I must remember to put a sign up in their window “Lost! One slightly tattered soul with sentimental value to owner. Please return if found, reward available for attractive returner.”

Now fancying licorice toffee.

I’m a dyslexic devil worshipper so I’ve already sold my soul to Santa.

I’ll get my coat…

OED definition of spiritual: concerned with sacred or religious things.

Sorry Father Lombardi but just why is this necessary? Can’t I use the Internet to marvel at the majesty of the universe via Hubble Space telescope images without believing in a creator? Can’t I use Google Earth to look at places I will never get to visit without thanking the Good Lord Above? Can’t I use my mobile to keep in touch with those most important to me without 3 Our Fathers & 5 Hail Marys?

Rant over.

Good job I don’t have Vatican TV – would spend my life angry!

I know, Mr Pipkins will be livid!!!

Seems like the Vatican are choking on their own hypocracy(sp!) again, wanting to ‘nourish the interior dimension of life’ yet they’re texting etc!!

Depends what your ‘soul’ is feeding itself on I guess and what someone considers to be his/her soul.
For some is might be healthy to but out a bit more often from the internet, whereas others might gain from it if they logged on a bit more. As it is with all things in life.
Just fetched 8 movies from the dvd-store … maybe that’s more healthy then ? (as long as it is holy and relgious I guess …acc. to the vatican .. haha .. .. well, those movies def. are not going to be approved by the vatican .. But I’m looking forward to them. Finally found snowcake as well, and Mrs Henderson. Busy weekend!

Great responses so far, which is not surprising I guess considering who’s blog this is – this maybe be totally redundant but to help counter nonsense like this, donate to or become a member of The National Secular Society:

Oh no!! lol.
Obviously the internet is helping nations and countries come together. The earth is smaller, our technology has brought people from all over the world to a place where we can communicate. For example I’m from the U.S and blogging with people from across the world. I love the 5 hr time difference from the states to the UK. it’s really only 3:49 pm

I dunno if its a spiritual difficulty, but I do have to admit that if you did take away the modern trappings most people have for a period of time, people start to get very nervous. A great example is when people travel without stuff to keep them occupied… they are stuck there with themselves, and most people have a great deal of difficulty with that. Is this particularly spiritual? No I don’t believe so, but it does show a psychological side of things that perhaps people are not nurturing enough of. I don’t believe meditation is going to bring about enlightenment in the ways described in sacred texts, but learning how to deal with oneself when thats all you got, can be very beneficial for people, and some aspects of meditation can help with that. It doesn’t make you inherently a better person, but honestly it can be humbling for many people.

Glad to see the posters here can see through this thinly veiled manipulation.

The only way we are ever going to ‘save our souls’ is by unification, and the Internet is going to be the medium for that unification.

Beware those who promote artificial social division.

ps, does anyone else think this guy (the pope) is pure evil? My skin crawls every time I see his face.

I didnt realise that being a Derren “fan” meant you had to be an Atheist etc- I do believe in something, as is my right, but I also like Derrens work, so I find it insulting that it is kind of being said here that fans are all probably religion bashers- sorry not the case at all- I dont know if theres a God- (though I believe in LIFE AFTER DEATH) Derren doesn’t either- he cant prove it- nor can I, I’m sure we will all know the truth when we all kick the bucket.

November 30, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Barry says:

Where does it say you have to be an atheist? Religion in all it’s forms is the same, it’s a belief system like any other. Your free to believe what you like there’s nothing on this forum that says otherwise. It’s as soon as you start imposing you beliefs on other people, telling them they will lose their soul/ go to hell/ not live a fruitful life / be miserable /be sad / lose money and friends etc as a result of rejecting that system. This is where you cross the line. I don’t even see any sign of religion bashing! Go to Richard Dawkins site for all that. Every instance here is an instance of the ridiculous doctorine of those who claim to be spiritual leaders and yet they spew out the most mind numbing rubbish (probably contradicting themselves along the way) and expect us to respect their side of the argument. The ability to “not be able to prove something” does not make it a fact. It makes it as reliable as any other claim anyone else can make without any form of scientific proof.
I therefore believe Derren is God, he has the powers of a god, the looks and the “crazy stare” of one too, you cannot prove otherwise. Does that make you “wrong”?

December 2, 2008 at 5:44 am

lol oh very funny barry : )

Derren a god lmfao Is that why I can’t stop ‘worshipping’ at the feet of the gorgeous begoateed one??? now I know the reason ahhh

sh*t did I really just say that?? *whistles*

hahahaha oooookay 😉
I have thought it through many times and my personal conclusion is that
So i shall embrace technology so i don’t get left behind to become extinct like a dinosaur.
We have no choice but to move forward or die…
We will end up with androids doing the shopping and such
Live with it! Though i might be dead by then as so much technology is held back from us :(
Derren can take me to hell if he so wishes, i bet its more fun and giggles anyway 😉
My spiritual side is well protected because i keep myself grounded with animals/pets.
Your spiritual side is safe paranoid android! haha
I want a flying car!
