First Night Last Night
Wow – thank you any of you who were there last night. I really appreciate your comments, and am delighted you enjoyed it. It went well, and we were all very happy afterwards. The little changes all seemed to work, and it looks like one new bit in particular will be fine… we were worried it might not pay off. Saying nothing more.
Have spent the day discussing a new idea for a TV special which I think could be very exciting.
The Monster Munch are arriving… I have been requested to remind you all that Roast Beef is the preferred flavour, so the prize for leaving the most, I’m told, will only apply in cases where that particular flavour has been left. Although I imagine that after a couple of months they’re going to be sick of Roast Beef and will start asking for Pickled Onion. Either way, for those of you daft and generous enough to bother buying and bringing these maize snacks for my presumptuous team-members, don’t forget to leave your details if you’re aiming to win the prize. (They’ll decide on what the prize is as we go along. It’ll be a good one, apparently).
Second nights famously take extra effort. It’s a curious theatre rule. A good first night usually means a poor second, and vice versa. The reason is, that it’s easy to relax if you do really well the first night and then, without the concentration that comes from first-night adrenalin and nerves, you slip up or drop energy on the second. Likewise, if you have a terrible first night, you put in extra effort for the second, correct any problems, and do much better. So for us, there’s always particular attention paid on a second night to make sure it’s at least as good as the first.
We shall see. Certainly it should be a lot of fun.

I’m sure the second night is going to be as excellent as the first! I’m going on the 15th at Torquay, have ΓΒ£135 worth of beef flavoured monster munch on order! ;-P xx
Am so pleased everything went so well the opening night, Derren. Gathering from all the comments I’ve read via this blog & Twitter, it was completely & utterly wonderful!
Yes, I’ll admit I read them all through gritted teeth, to be honest (sheer jealousy on my part, you understand) but still, not long to go till I see you in Crawley!
I hope (and I’m sure it shall) that the rest of the tour goes off just as perfectly. Good luck and take care as always.

Haha! Loving the baby pic! π
Glad to hear the first night went so well, I’m sure the second night will be just as fantastic! I cannot wait to see you in April (Edinburgh) and May (Glasgow). I’m SO looking forward to it!
Lots of love, Dioni. xx
I went to see you last night and thoroughly enjoyed!
***SPOILER REMOVED***
Would recommend anyone to go see the show.
Keep up the good work!
yay! congratulations on a good first night, I’m sure the second one will be just as good, as long as the crew doesn’t overeat on those crisps!
and finally you’re blogging again! YAY! π
I’m usually in plays etc, I had the delight of being the front end of the pantomime cow this year after the woman doing it before me broke her foot, I think maybe she did that on purpose! I don’t blame her, i lost a stone in a week because it was so bloody heavy! Anyway, I feel it’s all in the head about making extra effort and stuff, and really its the audience that make you either inflate with happiness or deflate and think, shit, that was shit. But since you can minipulate minds, why don’t you make everyone react more and then you’d never have the dissapointment of silence from an audience when you really want an impressed nod at the very least. Good luck anyway, you’re great and most possibly always will be! Hope everything goes ok on tour etc. xxx
Lol!.. The poor baby.
Judging by the “apparently” you heard them say it un-surely, so the prize is gunna be bollocks?
Nice update, although most of it seemed to revolve around Monster Munch leaving me with not much to say..
It’s ashame i’m poor and couldn’t afford to buy one of your tickets ):
hope you enjoyed the monster munch
appologies that they weren’t all roast beef haha
the show was amazing and good luck for the rest of the tour π
Imo x

*jealous*
I live in Belgium and can only follow you on YouTube. You really should consider a European tour (is there any chance you will?).
Luckily amazon.co.uk ships to Belgium, so I could at least buy “Tricks of The Mind” π
Hope to see you perform live one day.
Greetings from Belgium,
Robin
What are Coops and Iain going to do with the thousands of Monster Munch packets that will be left once they’ve finished gorging themselves? They’ll have to stitch them together in to some sort of huge patchwork quilt, or use them to create an enourmas collage, or some environmentally friendly (if itchy) t-shirts.
Not a good idea, boys. You’ll be able to taste nothing but maize and roast beef for months. π
New TV special? Make the UK stop smoking! Tell ’em it’s a temporary effect, a subliminal bit of film ;), whatever it takes. Will do a lot of good, cannot possibly do any harm and will have loads of free publicity with the tobacco companies spitting blood (which is what smokers end up doing, so ’tis only fair). Will become one of the most-watched – and beneficial – things on YouTube worldwide as well. See y’all in Buxton, dude – can’t wait!
was at the first night performance in Swansea and was blown away with how amazing and fun the show was well done.
It went perfectly Derren and as I said to you last night I was only a little confused once with the little change you made π I think it’s better now since it is less subjective π Enough said π
With regards to the Monster Munch… I was the one who gave a bag to Mr Coops with packets in a Clintons carrier bag (saved myself 1p from not having a WHSmith bag π )
I’m sure tonight’s performance will be equalling wonderful. See you tomorrow xx
Ah, my hero, my sage.
Why have you forsaken all that is American?
Though our masses require blood or breasts
To keep our attentionΓ’β¬Β¦
And rely on pyrotechnic cues
So we know when the trick is overΓ’β¬Β¦
Do you not realize that your fringe needs you?
That we cry out for our brains to be teased, boggled, and duped?
Will you abandon your faithful minions
Who seek only to gather at you feet -at $75 a ticket- and observe your genius?
To, if only for a moment, be the mind-fuckedΓ’β¬Β¦
And not the mind-fucker?
Come to the States, my educator, my mentor, my guru.
Show us our minds for the predictable easily directed fruit they are.
Exploit us, manipulate us, but most of all entertain us.
Your fringe needs you.
all BS aside… can you forsee touring in the US?
Break a leg and all that jazz.
Wonder what the prefered flavour might be by the time I’m seeing it in June? Might we have moved on from monster much entirely?! I’ve become slightly worryingly addicted to onion ring crisps… sooo good π
Have a nice evening!
@Dawn Hamilton Derren is ours!!! lol x
Glad the first night went brilliantly, im sure tomorrow will be very enjoyable by all and it will only be you who notices any mishaps etc
I cant wait till the 27th March!!!!

Thank you for a wonderful performance last night (Wednesday feb 10). It went amazingly well and my friends and i thoroughly enjoyed the show. You never fail to surprise! I only wish I had brought you a van load of monster munch! I promise to remember next time! π Xxxx
@Robin: I wonder how well, hm… let’s call them word tricks, – how well those work with non-native speakers.
I mean: Is what comes first to their minds the same thing that crosses the native speaker’s mind? Would the, uhm, rhythm of thought not be different from culture to culture (~ language community)?
I assume, Derren & Co. would need to do loads of very new kinds of homework… Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have ENIGMA here in Germany. Wonderful that would be. π
Sounds good! See you at Torquay on Saturday
derren,
really enjoyed show yesterday in Swansea, particually like the humour element which was missing from the other two. Didn’t have the same impact as the something this way tour for me but otherwise fantastic,

What time does Derren come on stage? I’m going to Torquay tomorrow but am at work in Exeter until 7 so I’m worried I might be cutting it a bit fine!
Went to see the show on Wednesday and thoroughly enjoyed it. My friend was called up on stage and it was awesome.
May try and get tickets to see the show in April in Cardiff.
You are a genius…….thanks for having a photo with me and my girlfriend.
