Finishing in Swansea
Last night was a classic second night – all good, and very happy with it, but was aware I wasn’t quite on top of it in the same way as the first night. Had a bit of a senior moment in the second half, but all went well. It all read fine, and the show was a good one. Tonight will most likely be an equally textbook third night: aware of a tiny dip on the second, you find renewed vigour for the third and it goes extremely well. After that, it’s just great fun and you’re in the hands of chance from night to night.
Would love to talk about favourite moments – Olly provided one – but don’t want to spoil anything for people coming to see it for the first time. Managed to cut my finger fairly badly at some point but I carried on like the brave little bunny that I am.
Intrigued to hear a white Swansea teenager talk to me with the cross-racial street patois I have previously only heard used by London’s self-possessed minors. The mixture of trademark South-Wales cadence and hip hop argot was far richer than our duller, flatter, more obvious version. This is an especially lovely part of the UK when it comes to dialect. Am fascinated to know to what extent our accents affect how we are perceived and therefore our behaviour: this local lilting speech, for example, must trigger something in the listener that suggests questioning and engagement, and in turn makes the speakers seem more rather more alert, friendly, and lovely to be around. Which surely, in turn, makes them nicer people. A wonderful self-perpetuating process, if it’s at all true.
Last show here tonight then up early for a long drive to Torquay.
x
Awh.. we are lovely people the Welsh… For some reason I also have a long drive to Torquay tomorrow 😉
Glad you have love for Swansea! Soooo gutted I forgot to get tickets to any of the Swansea dates 🙁 me and my mum are going to try and make Cardiff in April instead!
Good luck with the last show in Swansea tonight & take care in your trip to Torquay. 🙂
When it comes to accents, being from Sussex (where we’re sometimes perceived as ‘posh’), I was once told when I was young that I sounded too common to recite a passage out loud. That’d make the papers nowadays! lol

Derren,
Your senior moment was almost as difficult to detect as your cut hand! It was an amazing night, as amazing as the last time you were here with such a different show. We loved it all and thank you for such a wonderful experience, Swansea reciprocates your warmth to them!
See you in Torquay this weekend Derren! I’ll be there all weekend lol 🙂
Drive safely! Glad to hear things have started well for you! stay fresh and let me know if there’s anything I can get for you for June 😉
All the best
Jx
Hope you have a splendid last night!!!!!! Can’t wait to see you in Edinburgh and Glasgow xxx nice peeps up here too xxx
the lilt you speak of…it can make a person sounds a bit stupid…and you lived in Bristol for ages…so you know! or should I say…you knows it!!!
waiting for you to come to Bristol as it goes so I can delight in your mad cleverness.
Awww, you´re a Brave Bunny indeed, i hope it heals quickly…x
tata for the briefings…it is So so lovely to have parts of the scenery, playing in my head because of it…feels litteraly like watching little trailers 🙂
I found it interesting about your talk of accents, and wanted to know what the origin of accents were… I surfed google a bit and then I came across this fun little game…
http://www.languagetrainersgroup.com/accent_game.html
…where you guess peoples accents and where they are from. I found it facinating, because I was also trying to look to see if their facial features gave away the place where they were from. I got 37 points in my attempt. I didn’t follow my instincts on some, but pretty fun to try.
I would love to see you live at some point, but as I live in London and have Agoraphobia, I think it won’t be on this tour. Good luck with it though Derren.
Simon.
Fair play Derren. The show was amazing! James didn’t look impressed when you took the mickey out of him at the end haha! Will totally be buying tickets for your next show when you come back to Swansea! Keep up with the good work man!!!!!
It was such a great show, that bit about olly, it was hilarious, and the other boy who’s reaction to a certain part
of the show 😀
come to Holland please:) loved your book and tv shows
cheers
Great show in Swansea last night. I was in the front row – wearing the Italian rugby shirt. My girlfriend bought me the tickets for Valentines day, though I had to watch by myself as she’d already bought tickets for your show in Bristol in March (she didn’t realise you’d be in Swansea)! Her and her friend used to be big fans of Derek Acorah and other nonsense like that, but I showed her the light and now shes a die hard Derren fan! Cheers
Awww hope the finger is ok 😉 Pleased you enjoyed being in Swansea. Shame I missed getting tickets so close to home but it’ll be worth travelling to see you. I love the Welsh accent too and love the little sayings that I’ve picked up on unintentionally whilst living here.
Roll on next month in Bristol. Good luck with tonight.
Jayne x
Will be in Torquay for the show on the 15th… woo hoo!!! Hope the finger’s ok (brave bunny, you) xx
Derren
You might be interested to know that NTL opened a call centre in Swansea about 10 years ago and that the decision for the location was due to the accent. Unfortunately they thought that the Welsh accent of the employees answering the phones made the caller think that they were superior.
I worked there for 5 years, have a Welsh accent and slowed my speech so that I could be clearly understood and while people were usually quite angry and hostile at the start of the call, by the end they were nearly always quite chatty.
Weirdly I had friends who had harsher accents from around the UK who did not have the same apparent automatic calming quality.
If you ever want to do a study of some sort about accents and their effects then feel free to get in touch, it is fascinating.
Derren howabout u just miss out all your next shows and just pop up to Glasgow?? Haha the waiting is killing me 🙁 hahaha see you in 49 days xxxxxx
hi Derren – I wonder whether you’ve got ‘universal-language’ tricks. what happens when it’s foreigners in the audience? I saw you in the Adelphi a few months ago, and I have to say a couple of them did not work… Words or mind, what do you think?
still love your shows though 🙂
Fanks for the great show!
As always, amazing and extremely admirable! x
Have a safe drive! Torquay is looking forward to your arrival.
Can’t wait to see you on monday 🙂
I bet the show was still awesome. My mate is going tonight so if you could ask if there is an Adam Stevens or Stacey Betts in the audience to freak them out, that would be awesome lol.
Looking forward to the show tomorrow, and again on Monday.
Getting very excited about it now.
Good luck, but im sure you wont need it. x
Im reposting as my email address was down wrong…..Doh!!! (why is this needed btw??)
Hi there… I love watching you on TV but I think I will be too scared to come and see you in reality! Too scared to catch the toy… 😉
Oh Derren so analytical. How fascinating it would be to be inside your mind for one day. You can have my mind and I shall have yours. Hmmm on second thoughts I don’t think you could handle mine 😉 . A self perpetuating process of perception is indeed an interesting conversation piece. If your view of Swansea dialect is indeed lovely, then I would like to know your least lovely area of dialect in the UK, if indeed you have one.
A sudden change of direction leaves me wanting to comment on your blog posts. I have found myself very much looking forward to reading your, open diary, of events as they unfold. I liken it to reading Bram Stokers Dracula, eagerly awaiting the next chapter to place me in another time and life.
Hugs you poor boo for your little finger, best wishes Joanne. X
Aaaw, what a ridiculously charming man you are dear Derren! It’s not often us South Walians get such nice things said when it comes to our dialect (more often is the case that people assume we are just cretins!). I had the extreme pleasure of being there for your first show at the Swansea Grand Theatre on Wednesday and it simply blew me away. Thank you for all the hard work and effort you and your team put into creating this show, and thank you very, very much for taking the time to come and speak to the few people including myself that waited around to see you after the show. You are, in my eyes a brilliant man. xx
Just a fun suggestion, don’t know if you will ever see this. I would like to see you go into a shop and steal something and deliberately get caught by Security. Something quite expensive so that its not a trivial matter. Then use whatever methods you can deploy to not only get away with what you have stolen but to use the security guard to assist you to get more ………..wouldn’t that be fun 🙂
hip hop? zzzz…
welsh? just listen to tom jones & sir ant’ony hopkins…yum! 🙂
as MAD magazine obsserved many years ago, a brit reading the phone book sounds infinitely more high-class to americans than one of their own reading just about anything else… :/
Hey, i came to see the show on Wednesday, was very impressed but had to leave before the end to get the train 🙁 will you be releasing a DVD of this tour??
Second night was fantastic, didn’t notice any senoir moments derren. hope your finger gets better soon, i guess tin foil is dangerous stuff eh!.
thank you for blesing our little welsh city with your wonderful show, when are you in swansea for your next tour? i hope to get in early next time so that i can be in the front centre.
Regional dialects are indeed strange and sometimes beautiful things. People do seem to make rather a lot of assumptions about others based on their accent. Coming from ‘Oop North’, I know this only too well!
Glad you’re enjoying being back on tour Derren and I can’t wait to see you in Bradford on 4th April! xx
Really can’t wait till tonight now!! I’ve got my outfit all ready and even had my nails done specially (very unlike me!). Heard one of the other Engineering students talking about a bit in the show so I had to run away as I don’t want to know what happens yet! Hopefully my seat will have a great view and I hope it goes perfectly tonight and that you don’t get injured again 🙂
See you tonight!! Yey!
Was nice and calm and relaxed today…Went out, had a really good day at college (which is like a dog that talks…rare,) did a bit of meditating on the sports field…And now you’ve reminded me that I’m going to see Enigma in 39 days, and I’m all excited and impatient again! THANKS! 👿 By the way, can you call out to David Webberley (my dad) and tell him your name is DERREN not DARREN? He keeps saying it deliberately.
P.s. Misread that title at first…Thought it said ‘Fishing in Swansea’. 😀
Ah, accents. I myself find them interesting in another way, the same goes for language. Whether it triggers a different brain system. I do think so .. If you try copy the accents, you sort of feel what system it triggers, but then without the bases authentic speakers will feel in there. Or not, some will not combine so well with that accent/language probably either. Our bodies/brain have preferences as well.
Me, not being from the UK, adore accents from the UK. Some more than the other ofcourse. I’d be having a blast overthere (which would annoy people probably as they would be perfectly normal and I’d been already up as soon as they open their mouth. Ofcourse, only for a short period, but still ..
I’m sure everybody is enjoying the tour. We too, from the side.
Just want to say thank you for an amazing first night show!
It was the third live show i’ve seen and they just get better and better. Cant wait for the next one.
Derren
Awesome night in Swansea last night. Standing ovation strongly deserved. I can’t wait for the next tour! Good luck for the rest of your shows x
Fantastic show lastnight, simply brilliant… as always!! you never fail to amaze me, well done!!! Cant wait until next time!!
amazing show tonight. never seen you live before but this won’t be the last time. thanks so much for taking the time to chat and sign autographs at the stage door afterwards, especially as you have an early start. it was much appreciated 😀 love meriel and charley (sorry we got you to sign 4 tickets) x
The show last night was absolutley amazing!!! It was the 1st time coming to see you live after being a fan for years and it completely blew me away. Standing ovations was completely deserved at the end., can’t wait to see you next year, please come back to Swansea!! **SPOILER REMOVED***
Hey Derren,
Judging from these comments it seems that we will be in for quite a show. Will be there on Monday in Torquay. Really looking forward to it! Will be the first time I’ve seen you live. It’s always different than just watching someone on TV. Hope the finger is better by then! x
Helloooo Derren
What senior moment?? Ive seen the show before and I still didnt notice anything….. thats how good you are!! Did wonder why I was splattered in blood tho! j/k.
Good luck for the rest of the tour, x
Hi Derren i was at your closing night in Swansea. Katie you pulled me out on stage inthe second half. I’dlike to personally thank you for making my night i’ve always been a fan and it was such a pleasure to shake your hand- and the little kiss onthe cheek was even better! lol. Just wish i’d had time to wait around at the end to get you to sign my programme but had to get back to my baby and the inlaws! Thanks for an amazing night i really don’t know how you do it! All i can say is WOW WE ARE NOT WORTHY!!! lol x Good luck with the rest of your tour and please come back to swansea soon xxx
Warning: Don’t go to this show on your own! I got picked to go on stage but couldn’t because I was on my own 🙁 But that was the ONLY down side, everything else was just so totally amazing and I still can’t get my head round it all! Got to meet the big man himself afterwards too and he was so nice even though he must have been totally worn out (I hope the Monster Munch helped 🙂 and I hope the finger is feeling better). I can’t wait to go again and this time I will force my friend to come, even if we can’t sit together.
Hope the rest of the tour goes really really well and please please please come back here soon (and pick me again 😉 ). Thanks for the autograph and the picture xxx
Really enjoyed your show on the Friday night in Swansea, even converted my friend into being a fan! Look forward to seeing you here again!xxx
I have just been to see you in torquay and it was amazing as always. Apart from the prat that shouted in an inappropriate moment. Thank you also for signing my ticket and see you monday where I will do it all again:-D. Amazing!!!! X
” Had a bit of a senior moment in the second half”
What? You shat yourself?!
Oh, I see. Sorry.
Saw your final night in Swansea on the 12th and you were amazing! Third show of yours I’ve seen live and definitely the best, can’t wait for the next tour! Wish I’d thought to try and get an autographs after the show 🙁
Hey, I went to your last show in Swansea on the 12th with my boyfriend and my sister, I’d had tickets bought for my Birthday to come down. Im from Derby but my sister lives down there so we made a weekend of it.. The show was incredible, truely confusing and great.. Unfortunatly the weekend wasn’t the greatest over all as my dad had a heart attack in the early hours of Sunday and is still in hospital down there with my mum, however, when he rings he enjoys listing to my still confused description of what you did in your show and I have enjoyed remebering it and telling friends who are not still waiting to see the show..
Thanks for a great show and a good start to my weekend that I’ll certainly never forget. Would love to see you again xx
