I really enjoyed this episode. It’s amazing how you change people’s lives. Well done 🙂 xx
I’ve actually loathed a good many of the muggles appearing as subjects of Derren’s programming lately, but when Katie starts to work it up on stage behind the mic, when we see her start to get in to the music with the body flare… without a doubt, my favorite moment out of DB’s stuff in a while. Felt so genuine. That’s what’s up.
unfortunately for those of you looking for help, the NHS cut the service helping folks with anxiety/phobic probs with the hope that medication would do the job and offering telephone triage in lieu of counselling. Some help available on iTunes and Amazon from ex psychiatric nurse and Gordon Giltrap under Receptive Relaxation. Enjoyed the programme immensely and as an atheist, can’t wait for the next one.
After watching this show and the amazing results, 1) Derren, you’re amazing! 2) If you ever plan a second experiment along these lines, would you consider attempting to find a cure for gambling addiction. My partner (and soon to be daddy) has had a problem since he was a teen. I refuse to give up on him in the hope that if someone shows some faith in him he may be able to gain some self belief also. I have done what I can from the physical side- his wages are paid directly to me, his bills are paid from my account and he is given ‘pocket money’. Gaining help for the mental side however is very difficult.
Just a thought for the future.
Amazing show! i had tears running down my face when the lad stood up to the actors in the bar and when he came out…also felt so happy for the other participants. I could do with a red and blue pill and more for fears, addictions, anxiety etc. Is there anybody out there with actual suggestions on how to reach that place where we can take control of our minds for the better? Ive tried various hypnosis and self help books and audio to no avail. Ian you are advertising your own mp3 downloads on amazon. Do they work? Really hope @sarah jo and others here find some solution for their family and own pain. xx
Just watched Fear and Faith (Friday – Placebo drug), I wish I’d known you were looking for people for this show I definately would have volunteered, after trying everything to conquer my 10 years of anxiety and fear (and failing) maybe this was just what I may have needed (when’s it on the market 😉 . I’ve just purchased tickets for your live show in Liverpool on 29th March 2013. My first live show, cant wait. Lyn.
Message to Shaun’s message Nov 9th 11.27.
I too agree with your comments, sounds like I’m in the same boat as you, mother of a 4 year old who has suffered with this for over 10 years and always looking for answers. I’ve tried everything without success and am now at the point were I can no longer work and I hate the fact it stops me from doing every day things with my son. I love Derren’s shows and have just bought tickets to see him live in Liverpool on 29th March 2013, cant wait.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching it!!! And the next episode is going to be very exciting!!!! Can’t wait!!! Good Job Derren!!!
fear and faith
If we’re to progress and prosper, we have to question understandings. Not selectively, but comprehensively. So lets hope a student at the back of the lecture hall can overcome their fear, and point out to the Professor that his faith is misplaced. By virtue of the fact that one tenet says the big bang was the start of everything. While another tenet says there can be no effect without cause. It simply will no longer do. To have ideologies based on belief, claim infallibility.
Keep it up.
hi, my name is michael and i suffer from Narcolepsy and Cataplexy,
i have had this illness around 7-8 years now and am on medication to control symptoms which it does to a degree.
Im trying to get in touch with Derren to see if he could help me with my Cataplexy which is an emotional illness meaning when i have strong emotions of any kind it causes my body to shut down causing me to collapse!! After watching some programmes of Derren i was wondering if he could help me to control my emotions to overcome my problems!!
I know you/he must be inundated with requests alot but if i dont ask i will never know?
hoping to hear from you/someone
Mikey
So homoeopathy is not only partly funded by the NHS it is now supplying the military with drugs. There is a lot on money to be made in the placebo industry. Just think how much money homoeopathy is saving the NHS. I always thought bottled water was the work of a genius.
Having indulged in some serious hallucinogenic substances when I was younger I have experienced periods of fearlessness but they were only short periods as the fear of being fearless would soon kick in. I think you might be able to believe you are fearless in the right settings but to be actually fearless I think it would take some serious drugs to suppress that .
By the way Derren during in my experimentation of hallucinogenic substances I had some very profound experiences which seemed to provide me with great enlightenment at the time, providing both self insight and access to a common knowledge relating to the wonders of the universe and life etc – it may have been self delusion but it seemed very real at the time. The common knowledge would often lead to a point which surpassed human expression by means of words or logical understanding and resulted in a sense / feeling of realisation…….Love is indeed the answer. (I know to a lot of people this seems far out but I also know that many of my experiences were not just unique to me and were in fact shared / experienced by many others)
The mind is capable of some weird and amazing things. My father passed away a couple of years ago (he was 85 – I had old parents) and in the months leading up to his death he developed Eczema over most of his body which he had never had before in his entire life. Although this was a little odd what was stranger was that when I went to visit him in hospital when he was dying I too suddenly developed Eczema on my right leg. (It cleared up shortly after he died.) psychosomatic?
Hi Derren my previous comment was placed without actually seeing the show but I have just now watched it online now and I have to say I think it was excellent and very positive, particularly for those involved – they should consider themselves very lucky to have had the opportunity to have experienced it.
I suffer social anxiety from time to time and I know most of it is of my own doing and subject to the fact that I work from home most of the time with very little social interaction . I have always walked into my fears though and so I try to face my anxieties when ever i can. What is very strange is that I have noticed that sometimes I can literally project my anxiety on to other people I am communicating with, resulting in them becoming nervous and the end result been that the other person is not sure if it is their own anxiety or mine. When this does happen I then make the effort to make the other person feel comfortable again. I find it amazing that we can sense the emotional states of others. (We are a collective consciousness I tell you…..I am almost joking) (I always used to say that my dad could cast his mood throughout the house and it really did feel like that.)
When I went to see my doctor about the anxiety he gave me anti- depressants which I quickly realised were for the symptoms of anxiety – i.e. I was down because i was suffering from anxiety. In the end I encouraged my doctor to try me on Beta Blockers and I have to say it is a very interesting drug indeed. It actually seems to suppress subconsciousness activity to an impressive level. I have often felt that my peripheral and general awareness was turned up to loud in social situations with strangers and I would find myself analysing every detail of our interaction making myself and sometimes the person I was talking to overly self consciousness and yet with beta blockers these awareness issues would be suppressed to an almost perfect level. Beta Blockers do not solve the underlying anxiety issues but I do wonder if you were to take them daily if they would help to recondition the subconsciousness through building up positive experiences over a prolonged period. I don’t take Beta blockers daily and in fact I take them rarely as I don’t like dependancy. I like my flawed life to be my own as much as is possible.
I have experienced my father and my uncle give up on life after their partners had died and seen their health rapidly decline to the point of death and for me it was clear that the mind plays a critical part in one’s own physical health and even existence. The Placebo effect can only get better the more we understand it and it would appear that based on this show our understanding is getting better all the time.
I noticed that the group of people involved all seemed to be within a certain age range and I was wondering why this was so?
Good Stuff Derren (Ranted on a bit here but it was better than working which is what I should have been doing)
I often think you and your teams work has a beautiful human quality. Although this was constructed around the idea of the Placebo effect the point about having inner resourcefulness and accepting it exists was the big thing for me. Helpful ideas. I hope I lose my fear until I happy to do handstands on the rim of hell! Which of course can’t exist if god doesn’t exist. Hence an advantage of not believing in god. Quad et demonstrandum or something like that..
WOOOOOW. an amazing episode, and just incrediabaly inspiring. i also suffer from eczema just like the boy in the programme did, i have suffered from eczema for 15 years now. derren brown or anyoone else who is reading this plz reply back to me and derren brown PLZ fo something to help, no matter what it takes. i have suffered with this disease for far too long in my life now!
Hi everyone – I’ve just been reading through your stories and it sounds like some people have had a hard time. I’m so sorry to hear it, and very much hope things get better for you soon. x
It’s always hard to hear stories about suffering, but what made me really sad was that so many people seem to have missed the biggest, brightest, and best message underpinning these programmes, which is that you have the power to begin to build past these problems yourself.
Its natural to look externally for something to make us feel better; a pill, a method, a magic word, or in this case, our very own dark angel with a bleeding heart (!), Mr Brown. However what I think he was trying to tell us is that often, the answer lies inside ourselves. We get so used to framing ourselves in terms of our own perceived problems, that we forget we have to permission to step outside of them, and see ourselves anew. Outside of serious physical illness, problems in your mind and soul can be treated like a bag of bricks – all you have to do it put it down, and walk away as whoever you choose to be.
You’re all still here, so at least you have evidence that you have the strength to make it this far. Why not take it a step further? Remember that you are in control of your own mind, and when you fully realise that, you will see changes manifest in the external world. Believe in yourself; don’t wait for someone to give you permission. Be your own authority – this is your life and you have a right to bloody well enjoy it!
Think of a happy you and ask, realistically, “why not?”. If it’s a real-world thing, do it. Just go and do it. If it’s a mental thing, challenge it, or embrace it. If it’s a good thing that you forgotten you ever had, celebrate it.
Peace and love, groovy people xx
Find it hard to believe that none of the participants chose not to ”google” the drug Rumyodin or the company Cicero just out of their own curiosity if nothing else before taking the medication? I understand that it was made very believable with visits to the Cicero HQ etc but surprised no one involved didn’t do an online check to research anyone else’s experience of using Rumyodin?
I love your shows. I love you, man. Every tv show I cry. Thank you.
Having been affected by Social Phobia and other anxieties from a young age and a big fan of Derren’s I was very interested in in the Fear episode. I had guessed it would be an exploration into placebo effects and psychology and was impressed by what I saw.
However I was a little disappointed that some of the techniques weren’t explained further. Many of them (or variants of) are used throughout CBT (cognitive Behaviour Therapy) and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) which can have an astounding affect on various phobias and anxieties. I feel that some information on these should have been given for viewers with such problems so that they could find out more and see if they are something that could work for them (I am aware that these things do not work for everyone).
This aside I still found Derren’s work with the people involved inspiring and look forward to his future shows and hope to see him on the 2013 tour.
g’wan Dezzy wit yer mad skills!!!
Just watched part 2 and it was very good indeed. It was nice to see a fundamental atheist addressing the reasoning/psychology behind religion rather than trying to tear it to pieces in an aggressive careless way using science and poor philosophy that most religious people do not even fully understand (The arrogant preaching to the ignorant approach).
The problem with religion and all the problems of mankind will always be down to the poor reasoning of man (and woman).
I do wonder though Derren if you should also have addressed the psychology of the herd mentality too as this is fundamental to this type of reasoning/psychology (I suppose you kinda have in your previous shows). In world / universe of uncertainty the eradication of religion may simply result in another flawed ideology (Less we not forget that there was very little religion but a whole lot of science involved in Natzism). Perhaps Derren the likes of Mr Dawkins and other atheists need to put forth a more imaginative scientific ideology that one that pertains to eradicate purpose completely. A universe evolving through cause and effect seems paradoxically impossible, to most people, for it not to have purpose and suggesting probability and chance/randomness for it’s existence tears at the very foundations of objectivity through the uncertainty of these processes (Quantum Physics does that anyway) and that is not what people are looking for in an uncertain world/universe.
Have watched Mr Dawkins recent TV series and this show tonight I think perhaps science and atheists are beginning to tackle poor reasoning in a far more progressive, intelligent and considerate way – God Bless You and above all keep it up
Derren, I forgot to ask, is Love down to the placebo effect? Is reality little more than a psychosomatic experience ? (Perhaps we should apply the anthropic principle in reverse and the universe is compatible with how consciousness choses to perceive and believe it, because consciousness is compelled, through sense, for a Universe to eventually emerge – just playing!)
Hiya Derren
Just wanted to ask what you think your best book would be to get started with hypnotism or suggestion for a thirteen year old girl. I am really interested in how the mind works and want to try it. So thanks! I loved Fear and Faith by the way!
Derren… I love watching your shows and I hope lots of people become aware of how powerful our own minds are to help overcome what ever issues we have (or undo the issues our own minds have created unknowingly….)
As for the Apocalypse show I hope people became appreciative if they need to be…
I do think hypnotherapy is a powerful healer and Mickey who posted before me if you read this have you tried hypnotherapy for your problems?
A good hypnotherapist can help you stop smoking…. I wonder if the NHS has realized this yet…….
Anyhoo thanks again Derren for fab viewing…..
This seems as good a place as any to comment about the “God is a belief†episode.
Firstly, I agree with Derren regarding the main premise here. God is simply a belief, or as I prefer to frame it, God is simply a thought.
However, this does not preclude the prospect of there being more to life than meets the eye, so to speak.
There is scientific research that describes the continuation of consciousness whilst brain dead.
In brief, cardiac patients who have been technically dead whilst hooked up in surgery, have been able to describe events in the emergency room (after surgery/ resuscitation), despite being technically dead during those events. Contemporary science argues they should not be able to see and then detail events when brain dead. However, it is happening!
Is consciousness independent of the brain? Does consciousness continue after the body dies? Cutting edge scientific research is indicating that this is highly likely.
This is using the method of “flooding” a well known method used by psychiatrists and psychologists so really isn’t remarkable or innovative at all
Looks like I guessed what would be the content of each show exactly (previous comment I made was before the broadcast of either show) – I think I’ve watched too much Derren Brown, I figure out the spoilers from the trailer before they’re even aired :s.
What follows Fear and Faith? Confidence and Certainty perhaps. Shredded ships and sailors stories suggested freak waves were out there. But science said no. As it transpired, reality said yes. So, what about anomalous incursions? Civilian airspace monitoring equipment and retired ranking military defence system personnel, state the affirmative. While science again demurs. Are those ideologues, like atheists, captives of a belief system based on non-knowable methodology? Fortuitous serendipity Derren.
Ye why derren brown don’t be a zombie
I can read all the peoples mind.how I can read they minds .i just look at they face and i can see something and it comes to my mind what are they thinking .when i was little at school at maths i was reading all the percent peoples mind and i was findig all answers.
would you beable to anything for me, as when i go for intervews i freeze as i suffer from Anxiety i get the intervews, but dont get any further, as words do not come out i then get worked up ,and then say the wrong thing . after watching them clips i could do with the control are the feeling confident could you help jacqueline roberts
I watched the latest Fear and Faith. I find it irritating that he sometimes makes a great point to us all great things but in the Fear and Faith serie I miss the human care for his paticipants on the end. I saw he has a great hart when he ankered a good memorie to a girl on her birthday with the balloons, that was not planned! Let’s be honnest, he shows us the things of the mind that ar not alwasys nice, A real and warm en human end is what I like. These are the things that move me.
He is a great scilled person in the invluencing art AND a extraordinairy painter and funn
I think out of all your shows this one for me was the most interesting, particularly the episode on Faith….. Alot of my childhood was influenced by religion. My parents both went to church every week, I was forced to do Sunday school and Bible study, I had to join the church choir with my parents, yet it was never my choice or I was never asked what/if I believed….. I had an experince at a youth christian concert when I was about 14….. The guy on stage asked if anyone wanted to go back stage and ask Jesus to come into their lives etc etc ( the usual nonsense!!!), and out of curiosity I did.
To cut a long story short I did evevrything I was told to do and felt absolutely nothing…. My life didn’t change like I was promised it would, I didn’t feel or experience anyting, yet there where alot there that behaved very strangely and completely lapped up everything they were being told….. Add to that my Dad had a complete about face concerning his faith for no apparent reason…. One day he’d gone from being a fully paid up member of the God squad, to believing in absolutely nothing….. That for me confirmed what I’d always thought, that there was nothing there because if there was and it was so great like I’d been lead to believe, then how could a person just go from that to zero overnight???
I didn’t beleive the woman’s reaction in the church, it all seemed too quick and too convinient, but given my own experinces I could see how somene who is a little niave may fall for it…..
Very good show Derren x
