What does the 51st most influential gaybo and 8th sexiest male atheist do on his day off?
So yesterday, Richard Wiseman and I went for a private guided tour around one of the Natural History Museum’s storage units in South London. It was quite extraordinary: acres of taxidermy and enormous skeletons, and some very special pieces: the skeleton of the Thames Whale, for example, is set out in a glass cabinet. We had a smell of a phial of whale oil extracted from the creature. It was quite a pleasant, unusual, soft smell, rather difficult to describe. A little like white tea, perhaps. By which I mean actual white tea, not PG with milk. If you don’t know what white tea smells like, you’re on your own. We also met Guy the Gorilla, the erstwhile London Zoo attraction who now sits on a shelf surrounded by lesser known apes; elsewhere amongst some glassy-eyed deer, an antelope discovered by Darwin as the first recorded of its sub-species, which was then many years later visited by the teary-eyed grandson of the extraordinary naturalist; and the arse-end of the actual bear who, they found out later, was featured on the California State flag:
That one there. That actual individual bear. I bet you didn’t even know they had a flag. I didn’t.
I did take some pictures, but I’m awaiting some clearance forms to be able to put them up here, so you’ll have to wait too.
Next, we’re hoping to go and visit Archie, the giant squid.
Today, I’m meeting with the gallery-owner who will be showing and selling some of my pictures. For any of you wishing to see them, the exhibition will run from 6-21st August at the Rebecca Hossack Gallery, Charlotte St, London W1. Just opposite a sensational Japanese restaurant called Roka, which will round off your trip perfectly. More news on all of this as we firm up details: you’ll be the first to know.
Finally, as I’ve been writing solidly, it’s been a long while since I did any reading, which is rather upsetting. However, I thought I’d mention The Happiness Hypothesis, by Jonathan Haidt. This is a fascinating and challenging tour through the principles of positive psychology: an overview of empirical research into what genuinely makes us happier (as opposed to the misleading, short-term effects of much of ‘self-help’). I hugely enjoyed this book.
Much love,
x
Can’t wait to see the pictures! Indeed, I’d be very tempted to head to the exhibition of your own pictures. I hope it goes really well.
Intrigued by the book. As someone with chronic mental health difficulties, I’ve always found self-help material to be a complete pile of arse. So a recommendation from someone of your intellect on something actually useful is most appreciated.
Take care Derren – good luck with the book and enjoy any future eel-deserved days off 🙂
Much love xxx
well i’ve learnt something new about the california republic : ) and my goshh that squid is just ridiculous! x
Great to hear about the behind the scenes tour – would love to see photos of THE californian bear behind.
interesting, bit odd though
Ooh, I’m jealous. That seems like such a cool tour! Slight typo report, though — I believe you mean the Natural, rather than National, History Museum.
There really is a glitterati class. They really do hang out together and do incredibly cool things. (Granted, this example represents the nerd contingent of the glitterati class, but they’re the ones that glitter brightest to me.)
Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to seeing your artwork. It’s good to know you do take time out from your busy schedule. Loved the Enigma show, you clever, clever man. xxx
Well Mr. Smug Glitterati, actually I DID know about the flag of the California Republic. I thought it was common knowledge, even though I don’t live in the USA.
I had no idea about “white tea” though. Maybe because I’m not gay?
Yup, every state in the U.S. has it’s own flag and constitution. I’m just suprised to learn that the bear on the CA state flag was based on a particular bear and not just bears in general. Rather neat.
any tiny weeney little hints as to what the books about?
Hi Derren
Been looking through your old progs on 4od http://www.channel4.com/programmes/derren-brown/4od and very fascinating they are too.
Do you do training courses where people can learn these skills that you use?
John
Yup! Every state has it’s own flag and constitution. Also, when a new governor is sworn in to serve Kentucky, he must swear that he has never fought a duel!
Took a casual walk around the portrait gallery after your recommendation. Really enjoyed the visit. The room with all the identical paintings inside it is quite something.
Oh my oh my oh my….a private tour behind the scenes of the Natural History Museum……I do hope you put those piccies up soon…gosh, that´s so not fair….;-)
Congratulations with the exhibition, that´s great, the gallery looks utterly nice too only pity that it´s a rather short two week-exhibition…
Ah, Guy the Gorilla. Happy days.
What a lot of fanstastic things to see in less than a week! 🙂
I think it was about time you had some time off, no matter how short!
Can’t wait for the book though 🙂
x
How cool…although I dont like stuffed animals especially marine one, I d rather see them underwater swimming..and alive!
Looking forward to the exhibition…if you paint Robert Smith (the Cure), then I might really think of remortgaging and buying a piece 🙂
Fede
That would have been my dream trip as a child….. Only slightly less jealous now I’m an adult!
Good luck with the exhibition Derren! Any news as to when the Enigma tour will be out on DVD? XX
I’d love to get the chance to visit the Natural History museum. Anything animal-orientated is fascinating to me. I suppose I do prefer them alive rather than as an exhibit long-dead, but seeing Guy the gorilla (who I do remember) and that humungous squid must be quite a sight. Am therefore really looking forward to the piccies! 🙂
Good luck with the exhibition, Derren. Oh, and that book you mentioned sounds very interesting,
Take good care,
LC x
ah, it was not just Phillis tryiing to trick you into a post … (there was a line at the end of the post above .. but apparently it should not have been there … or maybe it is, but not supposed to be responsive to ..). Now then .. no books then huh on his day of …
White tea .. White tea (白茶) is the uncured and unoxidized tea leaf. Like green, oolong and black tea, white tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant. Oolong and black teas are oxidized before curing.
White tea often contains buds and young tea leaves, which have been found to contain higher levels of caffeine than older leaves, suggesting that the caffeine content of some white teas may be slightly higher than that of green teas.[1]
White tea … just from the top of my head .. (wikipedia head that is) …. is a specialty of the Chinese province Fujian.[2] The leaves come from a number of varieties of tea cultivars. The most popular are Da Bai (Large White), Xiao Bai (Small White), Narcissus and Chaicha bushes. According to the different standards of picking and selection, white teas can be classified into a number of grades, further described in the varieties section.
Now then .. I wont pick up on its scent anyhow .. so even if I had put my nose in a cup with (luke warm) white tea .. still would not have known what it smells like .. When you wrote about it I first thought about amber which comes from the ‘potvis’ but you did refer to something else then .. Not that it is likely I need to know what it smells like so that I can swim fast into the other direction whenever the thames wale and me are about to cross our paths …Are you sure it was not its pee? You and wiseman would have sniffed anything ofcourse what the conservators/preparators or so would have tried letting you snif at …
Roka .. they must start stocking on supplies now … the wild hurdle is about to come in there …. (where’s brown, do you see brown? have you seen brown? do you think he will come have dinner here tonight again? Oh, yes, you think so, then we will have dinner here ….)
The follow up of your taxidermy collection will ofcourse be .. humans .. and as it is not legal yet to have them stuffed .. you now can get some of those robots in the house … I can think of a few I would not dislike having around .. although the shock every time you run into them in your house/garden …. Oh well, keeps you alive …
Would a Brown robot sell you think? And what .. erm .. qualities it should have then or would they come with a variety of options … one more expensive than the other …. Hmm, not bad .. not bad at all .. The stage performing option wont be available I guess? Only for the original himself .. as the stand in … You’re sture we can’t work out a deal or so?? Then my copy can work Holland ..
Thank you for sharing….sounds like a amazing day out. I didnt realise the american states all have thier own flags with our without bears on. Hope you get to load the photos up.
You deserve even more days off to relax. Your enigma tour was fantastic!
maybe see you again soon looking forward to 9,9 09 bring it on!
mmm….. you make a girl think, on so many levels x
I might just have to go see the arse of that bear now, sounds interesting 😀
Sounds great, I’ll definitely be making a trip to the exhibition!
Yay for nerd glitteratti !!! Woohoo!
Guy on a shelf with the other apes surrounding him? What kind of a shelf must that be then? Can’t get a clear visual on this one. It can’t be a shelf, can it? Or dont the brits have words for those plateau’s. just trying to see it in front of me .. that’s all, and got stuck at the shelf …
Clearance forms … really? Nah … you just screwed up with the pictures again … Or really? This copyright on pictures .. I encounter on the most weird spots on the internet .. as I surf with images of .. I at times can’t download them with mouse right click .. due to copyright .. But nah … not yours .. or really? I was particularly interested in that one you really thought was intriguiing but about which you did not tell us …….
So, you and Wiseman ..huh? Working out dirty schemes together .. combining skills ….
And the gallery showing some of your pictures (you call them pictures?) starting August 6th … That’s an excellent date to start it .. trust me … escorted a few of the finest people into this world ..
Japanese … Roka… they probably already had the baby meat on the menu … and that rounded of perhaps also your and wiseman’s day of checking out “dead meat “and bones … I’m sure you invited the guy who gave you this vip tour (well .. vip … let’s call it .. people scared of crowds … ehehe ..).
Oh, and the book .. it’s crap (oh well …)… selfhelp is always the best (if it is help from your truest self ..) .. a few voices will be helpfull .. some will need to read the book … others will see upon theirselves constantly as if seeing upon someone else … enjoying the hell out of their other self .. but eventually bonding with the one that was not normal according to the other self … it turned out .. all people were not normal .. and once knowing that .. it’s easy to adapt yourself to someone’s abnormality or so called normal selves.
But I have to say .. you seem so happy …. It pours out of your text right into my soul … And once again, we don’t ened the book .. just let Derren read them and let him pour it out via this blog and on stage … and we all become .. the genuine happy followers …
Checking your biorhytm is not bad either … ever noticed this going up and down and back and forth and left of right of this .. atmosphere thing around you in your body? Even if you don’t see a dam thing in anything anymore .. it just keeps going. Just let it run … dont take it too serious, see for yourself what you want to see, or not, dont wreck the last chance on happiness …
Oh, what is gaybo? Is it something like taibo? Or did you forget the last o?
A day with Richard Wiseman sounds brilliant! (i am assuming that’s THE Richard Wiseman)…actually a day with Derren and Richard would be brilliant….and the bear of course! 😛
looking forward to the piccies!
Also, love the title….congrats on being the 51st most influential ‘gaybo’!!!! 😛
its sad you dont have as much time to read as you want to derren 🙁

Hope the exhibition goes well Derren. 🙂
Already making plans to get into London to see the exhibition!
Love the artwork and cant wait.
Glad a came online to have an update on the blog, sadly I haven’t kept up to date with all things DB in the last week or so *slaps wrist* Was flicking through some snaps I took when I came to see enigma very early on in the tour, such a good night!
Take it easy!
Chris
I know why you’re still sad at night.
We cannot cross the Styx by ourselves, can we?
Down in the boat, we are still afraid to be alone. So we take others with us.
