Bournemouth
What a beautiful place. I’d never walked around it before, but this time I had a great stroll around. And if you’re looking for somewhere to stay, there’s nowhere other than the Captain’s Club Hotel: amazing food and the friendliest, most attentive, spoil-you-rotten service.
The BIC is a great barn of a venue to play. The audiences were lovely, but the acoustics are rotten for any performer. From the stage you can only hear the front row’s responses, so it took some assurance from Jonas, our sound guy, that the audience was responding with more than the slow, single trickling hand-clap that was reaching my ears. Equally, those of you at the back were VERY far away – I hope you could make everything out that you were supposed to.
It was one of those few venues where we have to build everything – the stage, everything, from scratch, so our dedicated assembly team, and the in-house crew were just amazing. Thank you everyone, it is always a mammoth task.
I had a few days off, and spent them painting a picture of Rufus Wainwright. Miserably, it wasn’t working, so I am going to ditch it and start again: annoyingly, it made me come  back to the tour feeling unhappy and unsettled. But sitting by the river here reading Proust and tucking into amazing seafood has perked me up suitably, and the ordering of the iPad (wifi-3G of course) has provided an exciting punctuation point at the end of this little jaunt. Tonight you’ll be aware, UNLESS YOU’VE BEEN LIVING IN A CAVE FOR THE PAST THREE WEEKS, a series of documentaries starts about modern-day troglodytes and their habitation patterns. Following that, your blogger goes about looking at paranormal things. There are but three of these docs, so make sure you catch them. They’ve been great fun – and sometimes gruelling – to do, and I hope to make some more if people like them. I’ve really approached the subjects ready to be convinced and with an open mind (open, but not so open that my brain falls out).
Hope you enjoy them – thank you Bournemouth: must dash now to Wimbledon, there are others that need me.
x
PS ‘Blue Movie’ – yes, I know. Long story.
Saw you last night at the BIC. Really great show, and yes we could hear & see everything. I loved it all and will keep quiet about the content, as requested, so as not to spoil the fun that others will experience. Please come to The Isle of Wight sometime.
If ‘Blue Movie’ is a long story, i have the time to sit and listen! im intrigued now, id have never noticed it if you hadnt said!!!
x
Glad you are well and that amazing brain of yours is well and truly intact, particularly after all those convincing arguments you no doubt faced!
Having sat in the back row at the BIC last year, I regret to inform that you simply cannot see half of what you need to in order to understand and enjoy the show. Better tickets at the London gig and I got the full effect., which was fantastic. I’d recommend thinking twice before playing the BIC again.
Can’t wait for the documentary tonight!
I saw the show back in March in Bristol and on saturday at the BIC and have to say I much prefered it at the Hippodrome, the BIC is just such a big empty space, kind of expressionless. Also confusion about stage doors lead to alot of disappointment.
Show was absolutely amazing though, you are a very clever man.
I watched the show on the 8th. It was awsome, i was one of those sat at the back and managed to hear everything. I really enjoyed the show and i am hoping that you will be back down in Bournemouth next year Derren as will certainly go again.
Thanks for a great night
xx
Saw you last night. Fair play, pretty good – was waiting for your as ever amazingly ingenious ending, which didn’t fail to be perfect! Also, Stewie impression, blue movie – hilarious. 🙂
This is completely off-topic, but yesterday in an epic hour of procrastination my friend and I decided we needed refuelling, so for the first time in my life I suggested we go out to buy some Doritos (I don’t even particularly like Doritos) only to find as soon as we got to the co-op all Doritos products were on a buy one get one free offer. As a student, this is the sort of deal I would pounce on even if I was wheat intolerant. So if this isn’t the workings of some subconscious/subliminal enigma appealing to my hunger and my bank balance from my last co-op visit I don’t know what it is.
Anyway, at the risk of promoting the co-op even further – very much looking forward to the show tonight, my housemates and I have stocked up Doritos in honour of your name. x
Hey Derren
Saw you at the Bic and loved the show, the Finale was Awesome !! I did wonder if you wud come out to see us after the show ?
Have Funn in SW19, lovely place for Strawberries and Cream roundabout June time 😉
Hugs N Stuff x
Saw you at the BIC on the eighth 🙂 Was absolutely amazing and even though it was the second time of seeing the show still mind blowing and exciting!!! I even dragged my boyfriend along who is now hooked 🙂 We’ve been fighting over who gets to read your book first, being inferior-minded beings we only had the sense to buy one 😛
Was a real shame about the mix up with the stage door would have been awesome (and terrifying!! :P) to meet you. I hope that next time round we get a chance to say hi (in slightly less Arctic-esque conditions! 🙂 ). Had a good natter with some of the others that waited though 🙂
Cant wait to see the new documentaries!! x
PS. Didn’t know the smileys would do that. My bad. x
It was such an amazing show and so funny too!
I don’t know why, when we have the Pavillion with a proper theatre just 1 minute up the road, the show is on at the BIC.
hard to find an unusual picture of rufus, since many of em look the same (brooding rufus) & i dunno if derren prefers smiling or not. but i’d recommend these 4:

Dont listen to them lol, the BIC is great. Please don’t give up on it. Saw the show last year there and saw you in southampton too. What’s the poole lighthouse like to perform at?
Can’t wait till the next show and hopefully meet you again! My friends and I were thinking bout coming down the BIC about 11ish just to meet you again but something thrilling on channel 4 must of prevented us from doing it.
J
I saw you on Saturday night at the BIC, it was insanely brilliant! Me and my friends unexpectedly got front row seats right on the end (I have literally no idea how that happened). One of them got called up on stage and the other one was given something – I don’t want to write any more for fear of spoilers. It was one of the best nights out ever, thank you! It wasn’t even ruined by someone being noisily and disgustingly sick in the row behind us during a quiet moment ;)!
Was sat in the 4th row at the BIC last night. The show was absolutely phenomenal. I know what you mean about the sound but i hope that doesn’t stop you coming back to Bournemouth again because the whole audience loved you – it’s a shame you didn’t get to hear that. I cannot wait for the documentary tonight and for the next time your back in Bournemouth again. Thank you for putting on such a great show!! X x
I’ve been to the BIC on numerous occasions and I have to say that it is a huge venue. I went for a concert and I found it almost too large for that, so I’m not surprised by your comments about the place. But for all that it is a lovely venue.
Sorry the Rufus painting didn’t work out. But just think of the immense satisfaction when the next one’s done perfectly and all the accolades are forthcoming from everyone 😉
Btw, I can hardly read the words ‘Blue Movie’ within that pic. I think I should have gone to Specsavers…..
Take care and enjoy the shows in Wimbledon this week. 🙂

I can’t believe I haven’t been to see Enigma. Any chance of further dates?
I would have loved to do the Wimbledon filming dates but I don’t own any smart shoes.
Or tops wihout hoods.
Looks like I am gonna buy the DVD. Don’t worry, you’re worth it.
nb – troglodytes in modern times – interesting place near Barcelona, and this is the best link I could find about it.

Hi. Saw you at the BIC on Saturday. We were miles up the back in the heavens and heard every bit of it. You were absolutely awesome and should take it on board that we at the back were cheering and whooping away all evening! 4 of us came and we’re still emailing eachother about it today! Time to go ticket hunting to see it all over again!! (Isn’t it hard not to want to blurt something out about the show?!)
Will be staying up late watching Derren Brown Investigates on my portable TV as it’s a school night! Can’t wait …. Good luck with the filming for Wimbledon – can’t wait to watch Enigma on TV too!! God there’s a lot going on at the moment!
I saw you’re show last night at the BIC, it was awesome, you just get better every time. I’m gutted I didn’t get to meet you though 🙁 I hope you come back soon, and good luck with the rest of the tour 😀
Right outside my shop there’s an advertising triangular shaped thingy and the Bournemouth’s show poster’s been there for months, so I accosted the poster chap this morning and he gave me the it.
Yippee!
Last night at the BIC was amazing, me and my friend had the best seats in the house. Derren your shows are amazing and you had us both scratching our heads all last night and most of today! Second time ive seen you and your shows just get better. IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN DERREN LIVE YOU MUST!!!
Looking forward to the show tonight. If your in Bournemouth in the future give us a shout!!
Peace
I loved the show on Saturday at the BIC though couldn’t see part of the stage all the way over on the end. Was glad I had seen it a couple of times before. I was at the BIC last year and from the stalls it didn’t seem like quite the barn it does from the terraces.
As for the stage door… I gave up at 23.47 since I was freezing cold and only the walking back and fore between various exits kept me from freezing to death 😆
Yay, your website is back! 🙂
I saw a couple of days ago a documentary on a brittish woman who says she can blow up appliances and such due to a certain emotional state. Hm … you didn’t do her, did you?
And a man, not brittish, who functions (well, can function) as a human wire. His body has a way with electricity. Would not call that paranormal in the way the word is mostly used, but it was kinda interesting.
Although he was also someone who invented a whole lot of stuff in combination with electricity .. so you never know whether those weren’t just a few of his inventions. Nevertheless, .. iinteresting.
Blue movie .. no clue what that refers too. I already came to the conclusion that it was not a not so secret message to one of your admirers. Must be the investigations page then .. somewhere there … blue
Last night was the most amazing thing i have ever seen! I came along with 4 of my friends and we all loved it, you’re very funny aswell as a complete genius! We also waited around for you after, but was very dissapointed to not see you 🙁 Haven’t stopped thinking about the show all day today, which was bad, as it distracted me in my lessons! Please come back to Bournemouth sometime soon Derren, YOU ARE AMAZING!
PS. Blue movie!
Show = amazing. I’m definitely going to see you live again sometime. I really didn’t see the ending coming!
Hi Derren, well I realy enjoyed the show on Saturday at the BIC, but I have to agree with an earlier comment when you next come to Bournemouth you should have your show at the Pavilion which is smaller and is a proper theatre. That said, I was along the middle just in front of the wall and heard and saw everything perfectly well. I think you are a very clever guy, hope to see you again in the future. xxxxx
Derren,
What a truly clever man you are!
I watched you in Bournemouth on the sat – you were amazing!
Going to have to see you again 🙂
Legend!
Take Care 🙂
Must say, the BIC is a horrible conferency place to see a show in. I saw you on Saturday and felt it would have been a lot more atmospheric in a different hall. You could try the Lighthouse in Poole next time you are touring but the Theatre is a bit small and the Hall isn’t too much better than the BIC. But at least the foyer isn’t exactly like an airport. Something about the escalator at the BIC makes me feel like I should be flying to Spain!
Great show though.
I was there last night I was ***SPOILER REMOVED*** along with my son the one that had been on weed. that was so funny and my daughter went up on stage. we were definately loving every minute of it and clapping wildly. the whole of the balcony was standing at the end. This is the second time I have seen Enigma and still bits surprised me 🙂 The only thing I was sad about was not being able to meet you after the show again.
Did manage to catch you at Poole lighthouse with Mind reader, And as has been said a fab stewie
impression.
Your team are brilliant to keeping the show running smoothly must be hard work so Thankyou to all you wonderfull people for giving me another night to remember.xxx
Looking forward to the new programme tonight.
Thanks for a great night on Saturday at the BIC. 3 hours of mind blowing awesomeness!
You are one of my 3 people to be stuck on a desert island with, along with Ray Mears and Stephen Fry.
I’m going to be questioning how you did that stuff for months.
I’m now sat patiently waiting for the doc to start at 10pm.
i went and saw the show last night with 3 other people and u had us amazed and in fits of laughter. it was brilliant and im definately going to the next one. thank you for such a brilliant show. u’ve had me thinking and talking about it all day. blue movie…. didnt see that one coming lol.
Derren what a totally amazing show in Bournemouth. Gutted to hear you were staying at the Captains Club it’s just round the corner from us. Would have been amazing to tell you in person what an incredible show it was. I missed you last time you came as I couldn’t get a ticket so have waited a whole year to see you. Well worth the wait. Thank you so much we had the best night love Sarah xx
Dude ur a freekin genuis and u need to teach me everything u know !! 😀 i love the world of micro expressions n stuff lol
OMG I LOVE YOU!!
you stood soooooo close to me at the BIC last night Im sure I was about to pass out!!!
I think you are fan-freaking-tastic!!!!!!
I cant even put into words how much I love watching what you do.
your a brilliant magician and illusionist!!!!
I’ve seen Enigma twice! I loved it the first time so much haha!
Gna keep my eye out for your next tour – dont keep us hanging too long =]
All the Best
Alex =] xXx
I and my family were 5 of those at the back of the BIC last Saturday
thanks for a great evening-we could hear and see everything and are still talking about it now!!
Hope your next tour won’t be too far away we all can’t wait to come
Jacqui and gang
Haha! Just watched the new show and it was quite obvious that medium was a fake. So defensive, saying you had said things that you had not said, blaming everyone else. Nuts! Well done, I thought it was awesome, Lol. xxx I only found out about you a few months ago and have now watched whatever I can find (I am addicted) and think you are amazing. I have also become more sceptic about things myself now. Which I think is a good thing. 😀 Much adoration
Forgive me for my technological naivety, but can someone please explain to me what is so good about an iPad? Is it not just a rich man’s Ipod touch?
Hey Derren, I just watched the first episode of ‘Derren Brown investigates’, I left this comment on the 4OD page and thought I’d share my opinion with you too. Much respect, Sam 🙂 PS. I am a recent Film and TV Production graduate and I would love the opportunity to work with you.
“This is a very interesting subject, however I dont believe Derren asked enough probing questions. I feel the show realistically could have been presented by anyone (e.g the guy he spoke to on the sofa about cold reading) and you would have got the same show. I feel Derren needs to be far more hard hitting and find people who are willing to be scrutinised and tested. However I still enjoyed the show, but wasnt of the usual high calibre. “
Hi Derren,
Sorry didnt see you at the BIC, but have just watched you investigate Joe . Excellent!! You so cool, but poor Joe – gutted. What you doing in Wimbledon? Ive just booked my bro into a hotel there for work, was thinking of going there at weekend. Unless you fancy coming to Benfleet?
P.S. Whats this about a blue movie?
Oh dear Joe. Surely some people out there aren’t fake? Is is possible that some people truely believe they are a medium but actually they are just naturally good at picking up peoples signals without consiously realising it?
The bic is a souless place. Saw you at Poole lighthouse ( a couple of miles up the road) and that is a great venue! Could you return to there or is it too small for you now Mr Shamus Mc famous 😉 Enjoyed the TV show, cold Reading mediums ehh sheesh. Did I mention I’m a medium…. It says so in on the label in my pants!
C4 Doco
I thought Joe gave an Awesome 1st reading, he hit the spot loads of times with names and numbers etc. I was trully conviced (yeah right lol) and then we learn that joe’s sister lives next door to the lady in question LOL !!!!
When Derren asked him, ” are you fake”, “do you cold read” Derren wud of 100% known if he was lying to him, i wanted Derren to turn to the camara and just mouth “L I A R”
Also it wud of been good, imo, if Derren was read by Joe as Derren wud be awesome at hiding his “signals” to a cold reader.
“Have you ever been in this house before?”, “Yes this morning, briefly”. Some time later, “You never told me you had been in this house before!?!?!?!”
LMAO !!!
Love You Derren, ure Awesome !
Derren, just watched your show and i thought it was truly amazing.
Obviously that guy is cold reading, quite badly on the last attempt, and how he went into a rage when he found that you had been in the presence of the woman before the reading. How he thought that since you had briefly met her that you had made her skeptic, and so much more. I found it highly amusing that whenever you told him something that MIGHT have been a way on how he got the information, he objected furiously and hardly let you talk. I dislike people like Joe, especially now that its apparant he cannot ‘connect’ with the spirit world and all that jazz.
Thank you for that wonderful program,
Scott
Hi Derren, Thanks for a fantastic show at the BIC on Sunday 8th May. Yes I am the Ashley you had a not so graceful picture of 🙂
I would love to know what the music album was that you had playing before your show started? Please post the title if you can anyone.
Derren,
The bournemouth show was just perfect, I just loved every moment. You will never fail to amaze me and my inner-child.
Your Stewie impression, A++. Blue Movie was hilarious.
I havn’t checked out the doc yet. I can’t imagine you did a bad job.
Thank you so much for a great show, and come back soon..
YAY..
Amazing show last night at Wimbledon – so impressed. The whole show was wonderful and the ending incredible. Hope to see Derren live (so to speak) again in the future
They just dropped your name on Eastenders. Thought you should know.
