Common Ancestor Found
Fascinating article in the National Geographic โ two years of gradually removing mud from a skeleton with a needle under a microscope – to avoid the bones turning to dust upon contact – have revealed that our common ancestor wasn’t quite the chimp-like creature we expected. Wonderful stuff.
Also, please note the following sentence from the article:
โThen came early Homo, with its even bigger brain and budding tool use.โ
I thank you.
x
No, I thank YOU. Very witty for morning banter
Thought you meant my Auntie Flo.
Brilliant!
LOL Derren!!! :p
xxx
i banned my sister from attending any of my lectures… as i can always hear her in the corner sniggering at homo, erectus, and other unfortunate latin words!
but its a very serious and important scientific fact that Homos did come out of Africa to colonise Europe…
This early homo with the bigger brain and budding tool use… Was it “Homo-erectus”?
[Yeah, I know… it’s an old gag but still makes me snigger like a schoolboy!]
BTW that is a VERY good example of Homo u got there…. even if he does look a bit primitive… i like them a bit wild… ๐
๐ฎ He’s had his hair cut?!!!! Ooooh.
You always manage a twist on it, you buggers, haha!
Trust you DVB!! ๐ (sarcastic tone is difficult to achieve in type)
XX
Interesting article but I cannot stop laughing at the Homo sentence, trust you to pick that out! Good luck for tonight, I’ll be watching as usual!
Way to steal my namesakes thunder!
LMAO!! Brilliant.
I also like the question posed: ‘Did early humans start walking for sex?’ and the title of another offshoot article ‘Sex for Food’.
Seems like Ardi was a prehistoric pimp.
ha ha, that’s made my Friday ๐ But really Derren, didn’t you actually suspect it already?!?!
*lol* Witty as ever Derren.
Coops – glad the beard/tash/goatee thing has gone and we can see your lovely face. Suits you sir.
xx
@Kirsty – I agree, Coops looks rather dapper with short hair!
I’m also worried because I can spot a poacher in the backround with an unnerving glint in his eye… Hands off nasty man – you will NOT steal our medical marvel. ๐
That picture looks well creepy… looks like you’re about to jump out from that wall, grab him and drag him off into the darkness; never to be seen again!
lol
Plus: Love the homo comment… we do have a knack for ‘tool use’ hehehe
I saw “came”, “Homo” and “budding tool” and knew it would be a good article. ๐
is coops going from one extreme to the next? Full on facial hair to nearly bold? Eek. X x
Thats brill! Im strangley excited
LOL – love this Derren! X
*titter*
Is this an old picture? He looks so fresh and gullible…and getting rid of all that hair as we head towards winter would surely be a bad idea?
Also enjoying the guest appearance of the child-catcher. Fooled by Coops’ boyish looks I expect!
WoW! I hope this is a recent picture. Very much better this way Coops! ๐
lol I read the same article and a smile crept across my face, I’m glad I’m not the only one!
do not toy with me ppl! this is an old pic right??? he has not removed all that hairy goodness?!
Omg Coops you look like someone I used to go out with in that pic! (I’m sure you’re nothing like him, who was an emotional bully).
Derren, very funny!! Ha ha! ๐ But seriously, the article was fascinating.
LC x
Excellent article, and an excellent picture. Looking good, Coops!
(…..but who is that rather sinister looking person in the background?……)
Ive just read about this online. Very interesting indeed! and very human looking. Looks like my sister lol
trust you to find that quote!!! What’s happened to Coops hair? x
its all very well finding another missing link but there will all ways be another one.
btw on a seperate matter what is the correct etiquette when your friend leaves the message “Good News, I am now no longer a man, I am a WOMAN :):):):):)” on thier facebook… do i need to send a gift?
Thatรขโฌโขs very funny…Coops should be proud…but then we never doubted it…
Good luck for tonight x
Facinating article. Thanks Derren.
Hm, have you been hanging out with Wiseman lately? (the thank you thing)
I wonder why they have not found way more of all our ancestors they’ve found so far. Basing things on just one specimen is not proofing much yet. And ofcourse they want to find the missing link .. and will start to reason from there .. it’s hard to leave that focus …
The other day I heard that teeth differ between different cultures nowadays .. or better said .. certain traits are more found in some cultures than in other. Cool huh .. those scientists study the here and now .. although the way for those traits is proabably not all out of them either ..
Anyhow, those who have been working on this article .. must be a great job right now and during the period before it got published.
Derren, you are spectacular! Your shows are brill! Keep up the awesome work derren
This ‘we came from apes’ stuff is a load of nonsense…
@sara ye cause we came from a magical wizard lol
lol im so immature, and i have to admit that i too did snigger at the comment!!
x
Derren
I was taught French by your old friend Kim Wells
…just thought I’d let you know!
Keep up the good work x
As a former anthropology student, I was told that there was no room for prudishness on such a course. Given that some of the basic texts included Malinowski’s ‘Sexual Lives of the Savages’, I suppose there wasn’t. But, the use of double entendre as description is not uncommon in this world. Often, the implied meaning is just as acceptable as direct description itself. Hence, the now commonly accepted understanding the Sapiens neanderthalensis were ‘bred out’ by genetic material supplied through either egg or sperm from Sapiens Sapiens.

using a needle to clean it?? its wood to clean bones, wood. lol
can’t believe even Derren can be so immature [but oh i did laugh ๐ ]
