Why Derren was banned from so many casinos – the inside story.
Phillis has just received news from a previous acquaintance of Derren’s about the bearded trickster’s crafty exploits and how they lead to him being banned in casinos across the country.
In 2000, a young lady was working as a valet girl in a prominent London casino. Having worked in other venues, she was always happy to see a devilishly handsome young man with a rather familiar face. Nikki was unaware of the individual’s true identity – he was known to her only as someone frequenting her other places of work, both in and outside London. This young man was our very own Derren Brown, still early on in his career and not the international super-celebrity we all know him as today.
Nikki described him as “very personable. Always polite and well dressed and he took time out to talk to me and ask me questions about how the casino operated.”
Derren slowly became a regular. His demeanor was described by many as “quiet but very confident. Your average casino card player has at most a good grasp of the game. Derren knew exactly what was going on, he was extremely focused and calculated.”
This was not an unusual situation until Nikki began to realize that “Derren rarely ever placed a bet. At most he would play the fruit machines and seemed to have worked out how to crack them, but he would sit for ages at the card tables and just watch. Eventually he would opt in and place a small bet, he won every time without fail.”
It seemed to impress the other players at the tables and slowly became a novelty. Some thought Derren was there as entertainment, others were more intrigued: “he was very popular, everyone wanted to talk to him and find out who he was, what he did or how he managed to pull off a 100% result.”
Derren slowly increased the frequency and amounts he would bet. “It was never a large amount, but as it became more apparent he would never fail there was a point at which the pit bosses would become agitated”.
Soon he was beginning to be recognised. “The second he walked in there would be a fluster. The pit bosses would call to alert each other that he was in the building. I was instructed to stay close to him and get him whatever he asked for – to be extra nice to him”.
Meetings were held about what to do and soon it was decided that they didn’t want to risk making a scene. Very cleverly, Derren had managed to make quite an impression on people – if he began betting large amounts it could reflect badly on the casino if they decided to eject him in front of a cheering crowd.
So, quietly but surely, Derren began having trouble getting into certain venues – even with a subtle disguise he would be discovered and frogmarched out of the door. He would travel further afield but the network closed up and soon Derren realised fewer and fewer places were open to him. Eventually he scored a show with a popular TV network in the UK and put his casino days behind him for good.
I still think you might have, er, something up your sleeve… Or the twist is you chose to lose for whatever reason. Have you bet on being one out?
The fact this was posted in Misdirection is telling I think.
ahhh darren 🙁 i feel so bad for you:'( i dont care about what other people say your amazing! im still gonna watch all your programs 😀 can’t wait for the next series! and whens this ‘twist’ gonna come??? x
At the end of the show wasn’t derren stood outside the truck next to one of the camera crew wearing a hat and standing with a giant £180000 cheque? Happened as the camera panned out at the end?
Wow that was close, too close!
loved the way it ended… “we will get your money back!” haha
Wouldn’t it be cool if derren was like that guy off the film “Next”??
So he could see what happened before it happened, like with the reading on the speedometer!?
Hi Joe, I’ve just replayed the show and there WAS a guy stood outside the truck with a cheque, but it wasn’t Derren. I can only assume it was in the event that Derren was successful, that they could present Ben with his winnings there and then….. bad luck Derren, maybe next time x
derren = god no human could be that great <3
I enjoyed this almost as much as Derren’s makeup exploits at university.
Nevermind, Derren. Have been a massive fan of yours for many years, and will continue to be so. Everything you do is still wonderfully amazing!!
Quite an interesting read, this. Are you banned in casinos overseas as well?
Bought your book the other day. Working my way through it. Hopefully getting tickets to Enigma for March next year.
Just wondering, if you do infact get round to reading this, amongst your busy lifestyle, then it’d be great if you could send me a quickie with a guess as to how old I am 🙂 tej_radia@hotmail.co.uk
Thanks again for a great series: You had me stuck to my sofa all the way!
Can’t wait for more!!

Does anyone else think Derren’s ‘Casino Days’ sound like something out of a Bond movie?
Actually, thinking about it, Derren could probably be the ultimate Bond Baddie….
Haha, that’s brilliant !
I can’t believe they banned you, surely that can’t be allowed just because you’re a smartarse?!

Hey, scammer not so full of yourself now are you?
Just so you know I’m never watching your shows again scammer, that poor man thought he was gonna win 175k
Speak again ..never fraud.”
Ooooh that made me laugh. Bless.
Of course, this could all be staged to make his other stunts seem less staged. The whole thing looked really phoney to me.
@Joe, I saw the cheque, just not the guy holding it.
I did expect Derren to come round the corner at any minute.
Casino looked faked, as did the time it took to get there, and in as he was “just around the corner”
Also, if a guy has enough money in his bank account that he can a) withdraw £5000 and b) withdraw £5000 and not have problems with overdrafts/direct debits/ and not notice for like a week; then he has nothing to worry about as far as money is concerned, and likely didnt deserve the winnings if their were any anyway.
I also loved the “im on the phone and my tv is on, and yet it takes me 2 minutes to realise its my house and me on the screen”.
Im suprised not one picked up on this.

Bottom right
This doesn’t ring true to me. I’ve never met a pit boss yet who had quarms about stepping in on a big bet. It’s called risk management and is part of their job. Anyone who is regularly in a casino wouldn’t bat an eyelash at a pit boss refusing a large bet. And there aren’t any 100% foolproof ways of betting… It just ain’t possible.
Did anyone else notice the number 30 on the side of one of the trucks. That was the number the ball landed on. That can’t be coincidence.
Mr Brown you amuse me most highly and I love your work but moreover your persona! Definately one of my favourite human beings since forever, you’re a mind-stretching gem xxx
Maybe he will stop gambling… for good. 🙂
I love Derren Brown and his shows, but the Roulette thing was pre-recorded and he had a voice over. He had to be one out to try to prove its real, but also so channel 4 don’t need to pay out. Sorry Derren, i will still admire you though
TONIGHT DERREN HAS HIS REVENGE!!!
Been thinking hard about this one and the endind didn’t really work for me. Great setup though.
Think about the way DB works. At the top of the show in the (excellent) spray can gag he told us that the show was all about the FEELING of the gamble. The stuff with Westwood was ezxcellent and the ball in the squashcourt could well have been an (Impressive) rerun of the horse racing stunt (ie he only showed us the one that worked).
What did we actually see of the casino? Actually, nothing. We only have the word of a master of “misdirection and showmanship” that he wasn’t on a soundstage in Elstree. That he landed one number away from the target supposedly shows us that his method of watching the ball bounce nearly worked (and on another day, might).
Is a casino really that quiet on a Friday night at 11pm?
I think the show was all about the feelings he put Sweatpatchboy through – making him think that he NEARLY won.
The ending was Classic Derren Brown – leaving us thinking it had gone wrong. (remember the Russian Roulette?)
I was expecting a bit of an explanation at the end of the show… but would we all be blogging and twittering so much if he HAD??
As for the exchange rate well, google it- as of 9am 3/10/09 you will find1 British pound = 1.09123937 Euros
5000quid is about 5400 euros MINUS COMMISSION. I would round it to a 5000 Euro bet in a Casino- wouldn’t you? (Assuming) I have £5000 to spend in a Casino!
Personally, I didn’t like this as an end to the series- But I loved the show and I’m still a huge fan.
Mr Brown, staged or not that was some pretty tense tv! In fact if it WAS staged it is almost as impressive as if it wasn’t, so kudos!
If you want to give it another go I can have a dig down the back of the sofa and I’ll turn my bank account over to you (not sure which of the two would contain the most money…)!
Keep up the good work and ignore the people who are putting you down of your lack of perfection!
Hi
Love Derren BUT, does anybody else think the trick with the match boxes and the £20.00 was cruel? In your book Derren you say that you do not approve of making people feel foolish on stage by Hypnosis, How did that poor girl feel if not stupid and a “looser”
ooh – that ‘derren’ guy sounds like a gentleman 😉
Ok what are you up to Derren? Love the story about banned from casinos by the way but you’re driving me crazy trying to guess what you’re up to. I don’t believe for a minute last night’s Event went wrong (well ok maybe for a minute but then I came to my senses and remembered it was you we were talking about). You are playing with our minds again -but then I suppose that’s what you get paid to do! What next for us gullible fools?
Your an inspiration to people and great shows. Last night though was supposed to end like that though, mis direction. You were proving that you were genuine and showing all your other episodes were not faked. Getting it wrong by just one spot, was supposed to happen. after all lets face it, if you had won Ben 180k, people would of just said that the cassino wasn’t real, and you paid him out of your’e own pockedt. Very clever to get it wrong once in a while. Not that i doubt you at all, and i tune in ever time your’e on. Good luck with new shows and hope the two months passes fast.x
Derren: I feel like you’re my neigbour. Being an ophelin, I grew up without parents and I think we could work together!? I’m not ante-casinos but as my house is ruined, maybe take a spin, I have no wheels and so let me know where to meet?
Treblese7en
Derren Sweetie,
Fantastic show and series- never thought you would actuallly win as C4 could have been in a bit of hot water for using your techniques to, in the Casino’s view, “cheat” – so being one out was perfect and maybe we read too much into your shows but I noticed the number 30 on the truck as Ben was walking to the TV presentation suite. Now maybe that number 30 on the truck was a co-incidence and maybe it wasn’t and maybe it was live in a casino and maybe it wasn’t and maybe it was all real and maybe it wasn’t.
But It was an amazing 60 mins of TV and unlike anthing else I’ve seen recently. The “down-beat” ending made me smile and admire your showmanship even more – brillant stuff!
To Sainsburys for the 3D glasses…
G xxx
Derren is a sexy fox. Cunning, hyper intelligent, his DNA alone started to congratulate itself. His dress sense is incredible and the more I think about him the more my homosexual tendencies kick in.
Very Interesting.
I am looking into a book by Derren, ‘tricks of the mind’. Its on my amazon wish list atm, hopefully will have the money to get it soon.
Also, just wondering it anyone knew of a book [possibly written partly by Derren himself] about the atheist bus campaign, or one thats written by the same people who thought it up. It was recommended to me and they said they swear part of it was written by the man himself.
– check out the book section in the store – phillis
Thanks, cannot wait to see more stuff by Mr Brown!x
Very clever, if the whole series had ended up with a 100% success record people would be suspicious and think it were faked. This way there is dissapointment yet you can see how close he was, making everything appear less staged.
Cannot believe you were 1 out 😮
but i havent lost faith in any way, you are still amazing and Yummy 🙂
I also cant believe that was the last one. What can i do now on a friday 🙁
Without Derren my life is over for another year.Shame really.
Lets just hope the next series is as good as all the others;)
love Paris xxx <3
(p.s. Derren should come to Stevenage South East england 🙂 ) x
