Friday – Derren Brown: The Events ‘How to be a Psychic Spy’
53 Comments
Looking forward to it. 😀
I read a lot about remote viewing when I was younger. Really looking forward to this too.
In fact I think The Events are some of the best TV in years.
Really looking forward to this. Genius as usual. Missing Friday nights at the pub for these – now that’s commitment! Love Derren – he’s fabulous. Big Love <3 x
It is really a shame that 4 on Demand is only accessible from inside of the UK. I do hope that someone in the UK will be a real gentleman and serve the world a great pleasure by giving the rest of the world an opportunity to see the footage for themselves. And i do hope that someone understand this message and do actually something with it haha.
Cheers and love me
Nice introduction once again .. def. would trigger me to look forward to it.
But .to research real remote viewing .. it’s best not to focus on Brown ofcourse … ehehehe … he does it backward … starting from the same point as many interested in remote viewing… Things can be done in many ways .. but never for the same reasons .. focus on the outside .. focus on the inside … which drives the longest you think … or better said . which drives a person … or which pulls … ehehe …
Anyhow .. remote control .. remote viewing … we do get lazy if we adapt to all that remote stuff … and FAT!
Can’t Wait – derren jacket looked amazing at the end of that clip too!
I love Derren’s work but I’ve found The Events so far to be incredibly disappointing. Let’s hope he pulls his socks up with this one.
Fab, fab, fab!! Really looking forward to this! Can’t wait to see the results of this week’s ‘psychic’ Event! Derren, you’re the best! 😀
LC x
Can’t believe it’s been almost a week since I was stuck to my sofa! Madness.
I’m more excited for the last one! 🙂 🙂 Eeeeeee!
Can’t wait!! Hope I get the remote viewing to work. Didn’t syick to my sofa 🙁 That stuff never works on me it seems, even though I really want it to!
Derren better not be on board the Arcadia right now. I was going to go but my parents (who are there now) invited me a little too late so I couldn’t get on! 🙁
@Peter – I fear you’re not getting the point of the Events. And you are certainly not understanding the immense thought and work and actually bloody genius behind everything. Derren’s simplifying everything in steps for us, but go deeper and read up and be amazed by what is going on in his head to be able to summarise all that he has learned into 4 entertaining shows. Personally, I am astounded.
Ooo, can’t wait! x
These are entertainment shows and he is an illusionist, but he’s way beyond that. Enjoy the surface (or don’t), but scratch deeper and you will see what is handed to us ‘in code’ right here on this blog. Here is an opportunity to learn, if you are willing to put in the time. If only school and uni were this mind-expanding and fun and damned cheeky at the same time. But the telly, the glass nipple, leaves us malnourished and unable to forage. Learn how to learn.
I have been remote viewing Derren Brown for a while now and I can advise that it is best to view him after he has woken up, had his breakfast and showered.
@ JayKay
Well said…. Rather than pulling his socks up, I’m sure Derren will blow our socks off!
See what I did there? 😀 ho ho !
Can’t wait 😀
I kind of ranted though. I had to get it out. I am sticking up for Derren, but at the same time, I have realised this past fortnight just how much the man knows. And, as you said, my socks have been blown off. What I know is a speck of dust – I’m only a newbie writer reading up and picking up stuff to one day add depth to my theatre work – but even I can see what he must have absorbed in order to do even one of the stunts for The Events. The lottery was the PR starter and good on them for being fab at PR – I wish I could take a leaf out of their book myself on that front – but we sheeple are being handed an opportunity to have our interests’ piqued and to look further. I’ve sent of for books on the universe as a hologram etc this week Who wants to be stuck inside the box?
Winning any competition on here is not part of the deal really. They are set so that we learn something about ourselves. Maybe I’m just bloody reading into it all again!
@JayKay – Hear hear! 🙂 & @Francis – I like it! 😀
LC x
So, I’m not mad?
Almost worth cancelling my trip to spain this weekend. will it work if i record it and watch it back next week (assuming i avoided the results)?
@jaykay – well said!! think you voiced the opinion of most of us here. What derren does in tv is for entertainment purposes…bitch at it all you like, but appreciate what work derren has put in to even attempt to pull of these amazing events. No matter what he does he manages to astound and i dont think he has failed at all here…i find him even more fascinating then i did before.
cant wait for tomorrow nights! im baby sitting my friends kids so i may be attempting to remote view from one of their bedrooms for some of it lol! oorrr i suppose i could get them stuck to their beds with Derrens vid lol!
x
I once saw a German copycat on TV who claims to be psychic but basically does the same sorts of stunts as Derren, except of course that this German is only ever able to do one trick at a time (and he’s terribly slow about it too), whereas Derren mixes and matches as he pleases and astounds the audience at every turn. Watching the German is good if you want a chance at working out how these things are done – but if you want to be entertained there’s noone quite like DB.
@Peter – Poor soul, you’re gonna catch up with the post and feel personally attacked! I’m just trying to point out that those who are on here because they admire Derren could appreciate him even more if they look a wee bit further and follow up some of the issues posted by Phillis etc. And I think Derren and his crew would be so chuffed if we took away from all this work they have done, something that helps us be better, cleverer, more sensitive, more questioning people. However flashy and showy, there is always an integrity and a humanity stamped all over Derren’s work or watermarked underneath. And he might be irreverent and he certainly wants to sell a brand and make money from his success – and he’s certainly put in his 10,000hrs so he deserves that – but there are layers to peel.
And now I shall write a poem in reverence of the man…
Haha! Wind yer neck in, Jackie!
@ JayKay – Bloody well said! 🙂
@Peter – I’m actually agreeing with you. The last few years i’m following all the work from Derren so far (read his book, see all the shows he made and watch a few interviews) but so far, i’m not impressed at all at this stage. The lottery prediction was promising in the start, but he used the “wisdom of crowds” in an earlier stage of his career. I thought it was ToT season 2, on episode 6 i think, but i can be wrong about that. I think that this show will also disappoint me. But i really look forward to the last show in the Casino.
So sorry @JayKay, but i don’t think the show is brilliant only because Derren made it. I think he could do a lot better.
ps. This was actually my first serious reply on this blog i think, so i do learn things ^^
@ MKolthof – I’m new to the blog and it’s not the sort of thing I usually take part in and though I’ve admired Derren’s work, I’ve never felt the need to comment on a blog about him before. However, I think what I’ve found this time round that’s grabbed me is the sheer scale of the work and the variety of things he is teaching us. He is teaching us. And that’s what is so special.
Bollocks to froth – that’s just to pay the rent and catch our eye and everyone deserves a bit of glitz and glamour and an element of recognition and respect. I don’t like the Events ‘only because Derren made it’ – I may have a laugh at his cheeky smile, but I am no swooning teenager. I like these shows, because I have an inkling of the scale of the work that’s gone into them. It’s breathtaking.
And, at the risk of really going on – much longer than I ever intended – lots of artists repaint and revisit subjects and hone them and go on to build on top of them, so I have no problem with the wisdom of crowds showing up again. And when else would such a large segment of the public ever get to feel what it’s like to give in to hypnosis/relaxation? I think Derren and the gang have introduced many things which will spark something in many people. These shows may not be the same as others he’s done, but were the dark episodes of Trick or Treat? I like the foray into the psychological – the psychological that eventually leads to the meaning of things so immense that even Einstein could not take them in.
I have loooooved the past Events, and am really looking forward to this one. Lottery was obviously amazing (despite the fact that neither of the ‘explanations’ are likely to be the real one. Damn you, Derren!,) and, although I didn’t get stuck to my sofa first time round, I watched it again on 4od, and I stuck!!! Weirdest feeling ever!
P.s. Hope Derren’s alright on his cruise.
I think Derren’s awesome – i blame myself for not sticking to my sofa:( xx
I cannot wait
just know its gunna be awesome – derren never dissapoints, he proved that once and for all last week!
x
@Graham
and had a few cups of fine Parisian tea to get the smile lubricated
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
This is going to be amaing. 🙂
I hope this one works 🙂 the sticking to my sofa thing didn’t coz I was shit scared of it happening lol :p
@JayKay, well bloody said! It’s really uplifting to hear new commentors getting so passionate about the effort and amount of work Derren puts into it all, not to mention the balls to show the nation! Cannot wait for tomorrows show!
I don’t think people appreciate how hard it must be for Derren et al to keep coming up with new ideas for his TV shows & his stage work, etc. To keep trying to push boundaries as far as they can possibly go.
I, for one, agree with JayKay that I don’t mind ‘used’ techniques cropping up now and then in different things because, as is usual with Derren, it’s always redone with style, panache and elegance.
Maybe I’m totally biased (aren’t most of us on here? lol), but I won’t have a word said against someone who is just so brilliant at what he does best, no matter what shape or form that is.
Cos Derren simply IS the best! 😀
Ok, I’ll hop off my soapbox now…..
LC x
It’s all subjective of course and folks like certain elements of his work more than others. I do think though that there is such a wide range of his talents employed in this series in particular that the effort of everyone on board must be appreciated. And the point that Derren is messing with us – delightfully – has also been lost on some I’m sure. Apart from having too much sugar, I’m not really a quick-fix person and I like to leave a theatre entertained, but with something to think about.
You know what the best thing about the hypnosis was..? That Derren didn’t explain how people might feel. That he left it up to us as to what we got out of it. It was up to us.
It is up to us what we take away from the Events. So maybe scratch the surface and look again…
“But the telly, the glass nipple, leaves us malnourished and unable to forage” That’s the best quote on this blog. Ever.
Really like your comments, JayKay, very well put. I’ve been trying to explain it to a couple poor souls who don’t get it but I think I’ll just show them your comments. You put it far better than I can.

DERREN BROWN’S alwAys plaCing sUblimiNal picTures in his television shows.
Im so annoyed Im not on that cruise ship right now!!! Should have been theer if it weren’t for my parents booking too late dammit!
They said if they meet him they’ll get a photo so they can rub it in my face how mean is that!
Personally, I like the bit where he does magic tricks. The only complaint I have about the Events is that he has not lain down on glass while someone stands on him, or hammered a nail into his own face. Those are the best bits.
@CherryG – Wow, ta. I got a bit evangelistic yesterday. I know it’s all smoke and mirrors – Derren and Andy are very good at ideas and illusions – but it doesn’t detract from the fact that these guys work their knackers off, are very slick, practise bloody hard, think on their feet and offer up little nuggets (strangely, rabbit droppings came to mind there) which interest us enough to want to look further into it and pick up some bits n pieces. Nobody’s a fantastic mathematician or a mind-reader, but they are clever, well-read, well-meaning (with cheek, which is teh best bit) guys with stonking talent. There you go. I’ll feck off down to Brighton for a durty weekend with my old man now!
I think JayKay’s lost it. The words OBSESSIVE and BORED come to mind. This is a place for people to view their opinions, thats all it was so chill out.
I think this blog is making me soft (No dirty jokes please!) I have an increasing amount of sympathy for Derren – the man works bloody hard (just look at his Twitter page!,) to come up with illusions that the public are going to enjoy, that are not just visually amazing, but on an intellectual level are worthy of a gold medal – he’s a fantastic showman – he seems to on a personal level be a genuinely nice guy with good principles (not conning everyone in to thinking he’s psychic) – and what does he get in return? STICK! Stick from people like Peter Wilkinson who think they’re being clever!
Well, good bloody luck for tonight’s Event, Derren, and the one after that. You deserve it!
@Jess xxx – I think my post got a little bit lost in amongst others here , but that’s exactly what I said previously. It’s so easy to mock & moan when you don’t (or can’t) do what Derren does.
I, for one, would never criticise what anyone does if I can’t do it myself. Simples! 😉
LC x
omg how weird i drew concentric cirlcles on like all of my pages
Tried this online. Noticed the circles on the poster behind the picture, on the bannister, the clock, the security cameras. The two well placed spotlight circles and the clever spiralling coffee mug. So I drew a fluffy rabbit, on the grass, under the sun.
Tonight I drew a fluffy rabbit, under the sun, on the grass by a tree (so something changed)
No idea how stonehenge got in or how Derren made sure the paintings were circles.
Very impressive as usual. I’m learning but I’ve got a long way to go. Just finished “Tricks of the Mind” book. really great. As an Evolutionary biologist and a long time Dawkins fan I totally respect what you do.
xx
what a load of rubbish….how is it psychic of he advertised the circles in subliminal messages then wrapped the canvas in newspaper to make the link….yes its clever, I like it – but its not psychic
i didnt read that page in the sun where it said advert was on today, and i got a dartboard image from the womans eyes if u watch her bit when derren is talking to her, look at her eyes and it looks like iris makes outer ring, pupil makes 2nd ring and inside boht pupils were a circle of red dots.
