Hey, just watched Guilt Trip on 4od, I have to say, Derren, you are a genius!!
You amaze me every week with your series, your truly amazing, the guilt trip was extraordinary well done from me 🙂
Derren, you are a bad man! Poor bloke would have probably hung himself given a bit more time. Naughty naughty.
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL96DDD07BB401B49B I recorded a response to this video.
That was the work of an evil genious, will have to watch him cos soon he’ll be planning to rake over the world!
how incredibly inethical.
What a brilliant show! The reaction from Jody was classic once he found out what was going on! I just hope the guilt triggers have now been taken away?!?
I want to know if these experiments would work on someone under the influence of LSD? Mind control V mind control. Some people are weak minded and cannot control their own minds under certain conditions.
Shame you had to have a TV in his room and talk to Jodey in his sleep and take him outside. As am sure you could have just hypnotised him into believing he committed a murder within a few minutes of meeting him without the dramas played out?
Great shows still.
I meant take over the world not rake, not even sure what that means!
Enjoyed the show, but Devil Derren aren’t you starting to go a bit far. You have shown us these techniques before, but now your starting to come across as cruel. After that episode I can assure you I wouldn’t sign up to your show. Great Scot – image what you’ll do next.
Best shows on tv – always new ideas full of surprises and entertainment! Looking forward to next Fridays!
Pure, absolute, evil genius. Amazing show.
Absolutely , stunning!
A great show, I thought he was close to speaking out against some of the memory confusion things that happened like calling Tim Minchin a C*** and the plate switch. I loved the outcome though. Thanks for the show.
Oh my golly gosh! Derren is actually a Genius. I think that this is the first show that he has done and I have totally understood what he did. If he did any of the things he can to other people to me I would be a wreck. I’m gullible and easily amused at the best of times. I tip my hat and curtsey to you Mr. Brown. Bravo,Well done and stay the hell away from me with your sorcery!! Come to see you at your Leeds show!
Watched the guilt trip on 4od whilst suffering insomnia last night. Amazing!!! Kept me awake further though. Like this stuff just wish I understood an 1/8 of how the mind works. As someone struggling with anxiety guilt and panic I would welcome some relief, if you can plant false memories and create guilt where it shouldn’t exist, can the opposite be achieved?
Can’t but think, that this series of experiments is just one big experiment to see how the viewing audience reacts. Specifically, if we believe what we are seeing on TV is true or not and how suggestible we all are…
The last show might reveal something to that effect…
Derren,
Watching this Experiment and also the first one makes me wonder if there is a reason for these experiments.
It seems that there could be some possible “wake up call” to the proper authorities to at least be open to the chance that some accused could be innocent of the asserted crime.
I wonder if the review board of Sirhan Sirhan has been able to view the 1st experiment?
As a side note, I thought of an added setup that could have been included in the 20 Quid exchange, mark the money, he loses it to the “murder victim” then put the money back into his wallet to notice.
It would make it look like he had taken the gambling proceeds back from the deceased.
Enjoyed it!!
Derren did you at any stage wonder what the repercussions of this rather unpleasant prank would be?
You stated you did a psychological profile on him, but have you killed anyone? I doubt it. No-one could have predicted with 100% certainty what he might have done?
What safeguards were there for him?
Is it entertainment to watch a “nice ” bloke be taken to the edge of sanity for the pleasure of the publics gruesome entertainment?
I think most educated people are more than aware of the ability of the young open mind to be manipulated/brainwashed into making poor choices.
I am a fan of yours, but find this a step too far and beyond fun.
Me and my friends were huddled round a laptop last night watching it on 4oD and were in awe all the way through. You are amazing. 🙂
That would take forever to rake over the world!!!!
I think it’s impossible actually.
good stuff but hard to watch if, as I have you have been gaslighted. and interesting to see how people can manipulate and be manipulated. and brainwashed actually important so thx
Derren Derren Derren,
As a fan of the show for many years it was an uncomfortably great spectacle. Poor gullible Jodi was set up hunk line and sinker, even by his Idol. Reading through the previous comments I really wonder was he capable of anything (suicide) when he was debating “did I actually do it”, in his head. You obviously chose the right fall guy but was it too far? Welldone?, on a great bitter-sweet show!!!
B
jake not sure you watched the same show as i did! The lad was surrounded by people who were in on the experiment, there were camera’s everywhere in the house. If at any time anyone was in any doubt Derren was on hand to talk him down. Derren is a entertainer but it’s obvious he takes the responsibility of his style of entertainment very seriously. I cant imagine that so much planning went into the experiment without ALL eventualities being prepared for and a relevant action plan being put in place.
wonderful derren! As ever!!!!!!!
some more “make you think” tv 😀
Some of the best entertainment ever created.
You should publish a proper scientific paper based on your experiments.
Very interesting, but this experiment was especially unethical worse than the last to and if you were a real psychologist this would not be allowed under the rules of the BPS. I dont think its right to play with someones life like this and class it as entertainment. You’re other programmes are very good but this is too far and a bit disgusting to be honest
Watched the show on 4od tonight. It totally blew my mind. My favorite experiment so far i think. It looked like so much effort went into it. I bet you and the crew were a bit sleep deprived.
I loved the cluedo characters being included. Amused me greatly.
I hope your planning on writing more books by the way. Trick of the mind especially and your reccomendation of the god delusion changed my way of thinking.
I sat and watched this show purely to confirm my own long held beliefs that family, society and religion really can screw you up.
I’ve always felt that guilt, when unearned or unqualified is a bad thing. You showed an highly extreme form of conditioning, but that simply qualified how easily ‘nice’ people can be taken advantage of.
I hope that this will give people seeing the show the extra impetus they need to question other peoples reactions, to their own actions. A conscience saved is a life changed.
Just saw the episode on 4oD. That is one scary concept. How do we fix ourselves then?
I was a little uncomfortable during the show (though it was excellent,) but I took Jody’s delighted reaction at the end and the fact that he didn’t jump up and give Derren a black eye as a sign that he was fine 😀 Plus, I’ve gotten the impression over the years that Derren really IS quite concerned with people’s well being (you know…by the fact that he doesn’t dance on the graves of their dead relatives by pretending to be a medium – when he easily could – and tries to inform people that they can easily be robbed of their savings by these heartless, greedy people?,) and that he’s NOT, in fact, an evil prick. 😉
I am never going to apply to go on one of your shows you bad, but I like it, man!
and as for Tim.
Timmy, tim ,tim your bum needs a spank, fancy upseting a fan like that.
Hello. I was wondering, after watching ‘guilt trip’, that, because whenever Jody felt guilty he was squeezed on the shoulder so he associated with the guilt. Would he now moat likely still associate that with guilt outwith the show?
Thanks… Amazing show!
This show made me feel uncomfortable, to put someone through that experience just for the sake of entertainment seemed very wrong… but… I hope Jody left the experiment feeling more confident within himself and really happy that he had not called Tim Minchin a c**t!!
Remember that Jody had applied to participate in a Derren Brown show (o.k he didn’t think he had been accepted)…. but you don’t apply to be on a Derren brown show if you are scared of having your head messed with! Derren is making brilliant and though provoking television.
It amazes me that it’s always the same type of person, a suggestible person. I’d like to see the same experiment done on someone strong minded like myself. I would have clocked the surnames instantly on meeting them and laughed. They were all the Cludo characters last names or spin offs of.
Also, must half agree with Jake, Derren, what would have happened if he tried to hang himself or similliar?
Was he really lost from view when he went to the mock Police station as it has to be considered and assumed that some people would consider suicide before handing themselves in whether it’s hanging or running infront of a bus, especially a more unstable person.
It may sound over the top but I think they are all valid points. Would be great if you could answer there.
Ken
Regarding ‘Guilt trip’… I loved the whole Cluedo character line up, esp. Coleman’s mustard, but was surprised that he never caught on to you, on using the obvious. It does disturb me how the human mind, which we all regard is so strong, really is not. overall a great show. Much respect from a few big fans out here in Ontario, Canada
Jake, this is not meant negatively at all, put simply Derren and his team are many, many steps ahead of you. A little shift of thinking on your part may adjust your perception to what you saw and your interpretation of it. If not, no harm no foul.
Derren, your current direction is as intriguing as all along your path so far. Thank you.
Utterly riveting, and all the better to know that Jody enjoyed the experience. Derren’s talk with him in the ‘police station’ was highly emotional. It had elements of Jody being brought out of a trance-like state which he may or may not have been in since the ‘hypnobabblething’ that Derrn used on him to carry him outside.
I wonder if there was a little more to it all (especially the morning of the ‘killing’) than Derren revealed on the show. How did Jody know how to find the police station, which way to turn from the house? The production crew obviously expected him to end up there, hence the fake office & all the actors there etc. So the ‘panic’ in the TV van when he walked out of the house was fabricated. I think Jody may have been hypnotised to follow that sequence.
Still: brilliant.
The comment about LSD/drugs is an interesting one, “raves” etc are full of people under the influence of drugs such as ecstacy that make them very gullible and/or afrodisiac and prone to exploitation by various unethical types ranging from tawdry “men” trying to get into a monged-out bimbo’s knickers through to new-age machiavellians pushing their ideas or cults.
An idea for a future show perhaps ?!
@Radu C says:
How do we fix ourselves then?
1. Learn how to change your Locus of control to internal rather than external.
2. Take your children out of state education.
3. Meditate every day.
4. Stretch your muscles every day (yoga/pilates).
5. Eat healthy
6. Give away 10% of your income.
The answers are easy Radu C, but you won’t use them/ follow them, in 10 years time you’ll still be stuck.
Great show this one, it seems people, especially the complainers, seem to be missing the point. It is always stated that through hypnosis you can never be made to do something against your will or that breaks your moral code, what the series has shown is that certain people can, with manipulation, can carry out almost any task. Think of your perfect life, then, why you’re not living it.
I have absolutely loved the series so far. Amazing television. I’m wondering if anyone can help me though, I’m looking for the song that was played in Guilt Trip when Jody is carried outside. If anyone knows can they put it on here? Thankyou, looking forward to the next episode of the series DB, keep it coming!
Msg from Abeo: Derren answered this on Twitter: all music is specially composed for the shows, so not available, sorry… But I’ll tell the composer you liked it. Cheers.
The Guilt Trip was interesting, but did you have his prior consent for all that?
If not, I was not impressed by how much suffering you were happy to put that guy through for the sake of the show, and your presumption of legitimacy in doing so. The show made a useful point, yes, but that didn’t make it right to orchestrate for the guy so much misery.
I was pleased that afterwards he expressed how much he’s ‘enjoyed’ the experience. However, it was an odd statement; he didn’t LOOK like he was enjoying it at all, when he was crying on the floor! He was just glad to have done it LATER (once he’d been encouraged to re-assess it in a positive light- and we’ve all seen how malleable he is).
The hypocrisy of The Game Show was similar- why was the moral for the audience, not producer?
That show was just wrong!!
Sorry, Derren but watched it only for 5 minutes.
There was no need to make this episode: the politicians, justice system, etc. already make innocent people guilty.
P.S.
Just had a “moment of revelation”. If I am right, I know how you pulled your biggest trick to date 😉
even though I really like your show, I found the last episode unethical in many levels. to be honest with you, I truly believe that something else is going on with “the experiment”. It feels like that, you are preparing a bigger experiment…anyway i don’t know we shall see.
back to the unethical part, I know that the guy probably signed up for it, but you went far enough when you started playing with his memory. even though i keep saying to myself that is a tv show an is probably a lie IF is not i feel bad for the guy.
Who goes to sleep wearing a dressing gown/?
Absolutely brilliant. Never fail to amaze me lol!
Nice show Derren, any good books about fear and guilt??
@ Radu C- you can fix yourself by starting to check information before swallowing it as true even if it comes from TV (especially then!), strengthening your self- esteem, knowing who you are and what you want in life. That way you know who you are and how you stand in relation to the whole world, you are less gullible.
@ Ken H- of course Derren chooses the same kind of person. The strong-minded people, people with strong personalities cannot be hypnotised (or very difficult) and there is a reason for which the leaders of this world choose to brainwash certain people and not the others in order to carry on their plans. For the same reason some people are leaders and some are followers. People are not the same. Some are weak, some are strong. The weak ones will always be fooled and led.
@Lee Williams’ “Shame and Necessity” is quite a nice one, exploring and debating the psychology of shame and guilt.
