End of tour
Since being home, work has intensified, and I rather rudely forgot to blog about the very end of the tour. Forgive me.
I believe I left you in Northampton. It was followed by a return visit to Milton Keynes, and then up to Leicester. The audience in Leicester was great. Largely due, if I remember correctly, to a rowdy bunch of students sat in the stalls. Apart from one moment of blurting out the ending for all to hear, this gaggle of girls were a welcome source of liveliness. It was a fun show, though sweltering, at least backstage.
The final night was Nottingham. And the audience seemed to know it: the crowd was truly wonderful. In the audience was Peter Jackson and family, along with Rick Baker, the special FX genius. I was pleased they had chosen to come to such a good show. The final night would have been all-round wonderful, had it not been for the moment in the show some of you will know when I make my way up into the circle. Every first night in a theatre I familiarise myself with the route up from the stalls, but this night I forgot the way. I left the stalls to realise I had to re-emerge into them a moment later as I had gone through the wrong door. I asked an usher to show me the route, and this is where the trouble started. He took me out and pointed me in the direction of the long route up through the foyer, which was not what I was after, but faced with no other option, I left the auditorium again and ran up the stairs. The idea is to appear in the circle before the audience get bored with my absence, but the usher’s instructions turned out to be too vague, and I arrived on the next floor up and faced with several doors to choose from. I asked at the bar to be quickly shown into the circle, and received blank confused expressions, from a staff who seemed to have no idea what the circle was. ‘I’m in the middle of the show, quick, please, show me how to get in’. The bar staff still had no idea. One guy pointed and seemed to be suggesting directions, so I told him to go ahead and show me. He didn’t seem to see the urgency, so I physically grabbed him, apologising, and made him go ahead. He took me though a door and pointed up some stairs and said ‘left’ or something. I went down the stairs and there were two sets of doors. I only saw one and went through, came out when I realised it was wrong and tried the other. Some stairs took me up and I shot through a door into some part of the fly rig (the system of scaffold and beams that hold the lights). I came back out, back to the bar, sweating and yelling ‘Oh for fucks sake’ as i went, and burst through another door. This one took me down, too far down… and I emerged at the side of the stage to see Jennie or Iain looking at me in despair. Another ‘For FUCK’S sake’ and I ran back out, through another door and I was suddenly out on the street, in my evening tails, the door locked behind me and faced with nothing that appeared to be an entrance to the theatre. After a moment’s further panic I found one, and ran into a startled box-office staff member asking how he could help. Thank God this man, finally, had the basic knowledge of the theatre and understanding of my predicament to actually run up and take me to the doors at the side of the circle. I appeared, panting and furious, after what seemed like ten whole long minutes of leaving the audience without a performer.
Of course Peter et al presumed it was all part of the show. If you were there that night, it really wasn’t. What a way to finish.
Iain and I travelled back the next morning with our guests and attended the opening of Ray Harryhausen’s exhibition at the Film Museum, County Hall, just by the London Eye. Ray was there celebrating the wonderful exhibition and his 90th birthday. It’s well worth a visit: I believe it runs for a few months. After some meetings about the television projects I went to see All My Sons at the Apollo theatre, which is the finest thing I have seen for a while. And on the back of a friend’s Vespa pootling through London after the play, it felt like I was finally back home.
We are now all taken up with telly-business. Some exciting and stupidly ambitious projects are underfoot, and they should be broadcast towards the end of the year. I have also, these last few days, taken a moment to peek at ‘Glee’, under much pressure from well-meaning friends, and as a huge fan of Glenn Close, ‘Damages’. The former has largely left me cold (doubtless my failing) but the latter is terrific. I so rarely watch TV so this feels like a naughty treat after so much work.
Talking of which, I must get on. I hope you’re all having nice evenings.
Haha that made me LOL out loud !! Haha although I don’t suppose it was very nice for you π
can’t wait to see what’s happening next with u… Sure it’s gonna be fab a usual xx
miss u heeps Mr B XXXXXXXX
Oh Derren, I’m sorry but that has made me smile. π Panic always sets in when you get lost, sort of like being in a dream when you feel like you’re running through glue. I’m sure the audience were probably more worried that something may have happened to you.
I had the immense pleasure of seeing Enigma a few times and of meeting your wonderful, lovely self a few times too. As I described you on my blog…. “Not just a genius of the mind, but a gentleman of infinite kindness”.
The show is sheer magic and I can’t wait for those who missed it live to now get to view it on TV/DVD.
Good luck with all the TV work and take care as always,
LC x
Ooh…horrible stage-doors, i nearly start sweating imagining what happened π
x
Oh my god must have been awful to get lost in the theatre. I am actually crying with laughter (so sorry) great post Derren. Glad your having time to relax too you deserve it!! Looking forward to seeing you on the telly box again too. X
aww poor u getting lost, i would of got into a right panic if ti was me but glad u found ur way to where u were supposed to be going (eventually)
cant wait till the end of the year to see what the new exciting projects are π im almost certain they will be great xxxxxxxxxxxxx π
Poor you – it didn’t seem like 10 mins but must have been a nightmare for you running up and down the back stairs. Didn’t spoil the audience’s great evening though – so thanks. LOVE Ray Harryhausen, will see if I can get to Londinium to the exhibition. Hope there are some of his mini skeltons on show. Did you get to meet hi? If so am v jealous.
Ming has suffered many moments of ignominy at the whim of feckless theatre volunteers.
For fuck’s sake indeed Mr Brown.
Bravo.
That must have been so frustrating, but all in all a very funny moment to look back on afterwards!
Sounds so very frustrating! Perhaps it built suspense!
The show I seen was awesome!
No rest for the wicked tho, good luck with the next project!
IΓ’β¬β’m exhausted just reading that. Looking forward to you specials, so to speak. π
hehe. Sees an eventful meandering through corridors to find the circle. IΓ’β¬β’d have said for fuck sakes many a time myself. I didnΓ’β¬β’t think youΓ’β¬β’d fan to Glee but hey IΓ’β¬β’ve never watched it myself so I guess I canΓ’β¬β’t even comment on that in any respect. Glad to hear everything went well too and looking very forward to TV appearances in the near future and hoping one is this show as I didnΓ’β¬β’t get to any. Your book too in September. Awesome.
That was a lovely read! I can only imagine the panic you felt when you got lost during the show, but it sounds like you kept your cool!!
Glad to hear you have had some time to relax. You and your crew have worked so hard!
Sad that Enigma is over, i had the pleasure of seeing Enigma a few times *blush* (Manchester being one of the shows i attended, you might remember us all hehe)
I look forward to seeing the new tv stuff, sounds interesting!
Best wishes
Diane X
Oh my God, itΓ’β¬β’s all so Spinal Tap.
I was at the Nottingham show and I can safely say, despite the running around and getting lost, it was truly magnificent and IΓ’β¬β’d see it many times over. If anything, the wait and confusion as to what was going on added to the suspense because everyone was already unnerved anyway.
It was just a shame that I was sitting so far back that all I could see was a suited blur with a rather dashing goatee.
i was clueless to you leaving the theatre lol! all i know is i was sweating buckets by the time i sat back down, after having a spotlight directly on me all that time haha!
The tour was amazing, and i cant wait for the tv stuff!
x
Also you are not alone with Glee, it does absolutely nothing for me either. Yet when I tell people IΓ’β¬β’m not a Γ’β¬ΛGleekΓ’β¬β’ I believe the term is, I am looked at like I am mentally ill and am to be pitied in some way. I also agree that Γ’β¬ΛDamagesΓ’β¬β’ is fabulous but unfortunately I didnΓ’β¬β’t catch as much of it as I would have liked.
Oh Derren, Sorry but I’ve had a good laugh at your predicament. I guess you’re lucky they let you back into the theatre without a ticket! Seriously though, I saw the show a few times and enjoyed every one. Looking forward to seeing it on TV, especially the end. Enjoyed all the blogs from the different venues. Good luck with the TV work and whatever you’re doing in the future.
Love and best wishes XX
I’m so sorry about the blip in the show! D: But I’m glad you were able to find your bearings, at least.
I’m looking forward to the new material that’s coming! π
Hope all is well with you, and thank you again for a wonderful show!
~Michelle (the girl who gave you sugar cubes in March at Southampton)
Amazingly nearly 200 ENIGMA shows have been performed.
Unfortunaely I’ve only seen 8shows,but I’ve followed Derren’s
exhausting schedule not physically thanks to the modern technology.
Derren and his crews had an incredible energy and stamina.
That was not just job for them but a remarkably achievement job done.
That was breathtaking, amazing and delightful ingenious entertainment.
Thank you to all for giving us wonderful memories including a nightmare
for you.
I’m going back home for a holiday. I wish you were coming with us.
I’d like to show you around picturesque peaceful places, spiritual shrines,
magnificent old temples and breathtaking gardens etc. I’m very much sure
you’d enjoy being there. I hope one day my dream come true…
Best wishes and with lots of love xxx
I had chance to go to the london film museum too it was great:-D. Went on the london eye too great views over london:-Dx
I’m sure it was not the grand finale you were expecting from your last show, running around like Challenge Anneka trying to find your way back in to continue your show but a thoroughly entertaining story & one I’m sure will make you chuckle a little when you think about it from time to time……lol! I wonder if bloopers like this will be added to the dvd being released at Christmas……that would definitely be fun to watch…..lol! Love your work Derren! May I also add you are one of the most charming & entertaining people I have ever met & a thoroughly nice & very handsome guy. π
I can just imagine your internal dialogue during the circle incident. A bit more “For Fuck Sakes: I’m sure.
Hope you have a chance to enjoy a bit of a rest and reflection before it’s off to the next grand scheme.
-Cheers
Hilararious Derren, I agree with Tina as your last performance – predicament was definatly a case of Life imitating Art ( Spinal Tap style )and thank you for a wonderful evening of entertainment when your tour came to the Hawth theatre in Crawley, it’s been a joy to read about the tour as its wound across the length and breadth of the land ever since, I hope it won’t be long before you and your teams talants can bamboozle me away form the cares of this life if only for a short while again. all the best.
Saw you at the Sunderland show and the night was a surreal experience. After the first TV show I saw you on all those years ago I have been completely hooked. I never used to be interested in people went around in my own little world, but since then I have maybe still appeared to be in Lyndaland but I rarely miss a thing. It’s like you can watch people unconsciously/subconsciously. I see things without looking now itΓ’β¬β’s weird! I just wish I knew how you make people sleep with just a touch! Imagine the fun you could have with that! Lol!
Thanks for the DNA by the way, I am hoping to go back to uni next year to begin a forensic science degree and when you put my ticket in your mouth to look for a pen (sorry a sharpie)lol you left your DNA on my ticket so itΓ’β¬β’s now under armed guard.lol
*Jawfloor*
I had to read the end of that drama through my fingers. “For Fuck’s Sake” does not suffice, surely? What a nightmare for you. π
I had the pleasure of being at your last (and my first) show in Northampton a few rows from the front. I got more than I expected when I discovered how susceptible I am to your talents of the mind. Thank you for a great show! All-in-all it was the best day of the last few years, even more so because it was a welcome ending to a day spent driving cross-country after my nine-year-old was diagnosed with OCD and autism. Unfortunately I managed to miss you at the stage door by seconds thereby failing to ask for your autograph on his behalf, but that’s just a reason to come to another show. π Enjoy your resting moments!
Hi Derren,
Surely an Australian tour is in order???
You poor bugger, talk about stressful! I can’t believe the usher didn’t know where the circle was, but then again, I bet he/she was a student who’d started working there part time or something similar. Talk about bad luck, but hey, the tour was a massive success, so it doesn’t matter anyway. Hope the telly work goes more smoothly π
Firstly, the entire incident of finding your way back and having it work out in the end is a good memory for you. Glee, huh… My daughter’s choir had 72 hours to choreograph and sing for Glee on Operah. Enjoy the short 4 minute link. These are just kids, not perfect, but the recognition helps to fund the arts for high school students in our region as well as unofficial ambassadors for schools, nationally.
Derren, I hope you can come to the states and I will book my family and friends to see your show. Take care and keep busy. Life is short.
OMG…couldnt help but laugh for ages at your mishap at nottingham…. took me forever to finish reading this post…was laughing soo much..Im sure it wasn’t funny at all at that point but now its hilarious!!! hope your mic wa off when you were having your moments…lol..my suggestion is that the staff need to be retrained….and it was clear they didnt really know who you were either…lol..silly people…what a way to finish the tour…what had the mos is that you ended up outside the theatre…lol…ok ok..ive stopped laughing now…hope the tv stuff is going well, have fun with the shoots and that…cn’t wait to see the finished project on tv soon..
take care
Hikky,,
xxxx
very kafkaesque…
I really do hope that some day I’ll be able to leave the U.S so I can see one of Derren’s shows. They sound fantastic.I adore what I get to see of Derren’s television appearances but there is something about live theatre that can’t be replaced. To see him in action would be amazing. I am very envious of his fans that don’t have the Atlantic separating them from a show.
I did hear a rumor about a possible show being planned for the states though (New York maybe?) coming up in 2011 or 2012. Probably no basis in that. More likely my own wishful thinking. Oh well. One day.
Owe my goodness that cracked me up!
I would’ve loved to see his face when he stepped into the street and hearing the
iron door slam shut behind him! Where’s the camera when you need it.
Ouch! Probably best to brazen it out for the crowd and pretend that’s what you intended to do all along. Works better if everyone’s in a trance mind.
And who knows, after convincing Peter Jackson it was all part of the act maybe you’ll get to play Gandalf in flashback for “The Hobbit”!
You’ll have to work hard, I hear ‘Paul ‘the psychic octopus’, famous for predicting the winners of world cup football games is planning a TV special. Lets face it, he’s got the underwater psychic angle boxed off, unless you can scuba dive?
Very funny, apologies for laughing!
When ‘Lost’ finished a few weeks ago a ‘friend’ told me Glee was a great series to get into. I lasted about 2 minutes before I wanted to vom.
Great tour, I’m glad I got to see it this time.
Ow, that sounded frightning π
When will Enigma air on telly? Can’t wait to see it again!
Having been through a similar thing (not quite as protracted and desperate!) in the maze of the Barbican Pit, I am re-living your white panic to get back on stage! Trying to get from one Northern Line branch to the other under Euston Station and finding the hidden sign at Baker Street which points the way to the Circle Line provokes similar ‘for fuck’s sake’ moments, so watch out there if you ever venture on the tube again; I’m sure it’ll set off vivid flashbacks!
Thank you for the experience that was Enigma. I’d never actually seen a live show in all this time and watching it twice, as with Andy Nyman’s Ghost Stories, allowed me to be able to take in the intricacies and marvel at the showmanship and professionalism of the whole team involved. You may be at the helm, but there are many
feet paddling away like crazy under the calm, virtually ripple-free surface you so elegantly glide over.
And I’ve made many Twitter-Looney buddies via the DB blog and the Arg last year and I’m grateful that I have this bunch of dafties (they’re actually lovely) from all over the country to converse with of an evening and now to meet up with from time to time.
Best of luck (though it will be through hard work, I know) with the next lot of awfully big adventures. You good soul.
And the attraction of Glee is also over my head. But Damages is ace – though the last series was a bit so so. And Rose Byrne needs to bloody smile a bit more – bloody miserable! And eat a bit more!
As always, wonderful to hear what you are up to. I do not think that I am alone in finding pleasure (born of affection) in you being as human as the rest of us.
Derren gets lost!
I can hear them now…
“Why didn’t you just read the usher’s mind, Derren?”
“Why don’t you have the place memorised?”
“Why oh why do you not know everything ever, Derren?”
I am also glad to hear that you swore in frustration. Weird, perverse pleasures.
Glad that it all worked out. ***SPOILER REMOVED***
Omg that must have been awful for you ending up on the street. and I am very sorry but i couldn’t help myself laughing at your misfortune I am a very bad person π
JayKay: Oh, you tweet as well? Send me a tweet @powerofstrange and I’ll follow you.
WTF? What spoiler? I haven’t even seen the show! (Much to my chagrin). Cor blimey guvnor must have been a good guess!
I was only joking, honest m’lud.
In fact, my attempt at humour was based on one of the posts above so maybe you should re-read them.
I am honestly glad it did not ruin your evening, or theirs.
Having seen ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’ I too marvel at the professionalism and stamina of the whole team. Well done, guys. I just wish I had seen Enigma.
I echo JayKay’s post about ‘feet paddling away like crazy’ while you ‘glide effortlessly over the surface’.
Anyway, good luck with the ‘stupidly ambitious’ TV work.
I can’t wait… it has got to be better than Glee. No competition.
Thank you, Mr Entertainer Man.
I finished your book yesterday and I daresay it has been one of the best books that I have read so far. I hope I can make to one of your shows one of these days. The island isn’t so far away from Germany, maybe next year and hopefully before you get too old.
Cheers.
How awful….on the last night also π Its a good thing you have wonderful fans that, despite mishaps still think your doing some amazing art of trickery on them π I can understand your frustration though….! My partner and I came to see you on your last Birmingham show and found it to be amazing, it’s refreshing to see a performer working hard with his talent rather then take it for granted as with other comedian’s and performers we’ve seen! Thank you so much for all your hard work and for being so wonderful to your fans at the stage door!! π xxxx
Hm, so maybe Coops or Liain must be there to shine the way for you next time .. most celebs will need to see to that .. but you .. ofcourse .. mind control … did not need that ..
If it really happened like that .. weird people working over there for sure!
That,s so funny Derren. I wish I had been there…
Enigma has come to a close – the end of a dream, huh? I am sorry for those (like myself) who could not see it live, but one door closes, another opens and now we have new telly-business to look forward to!
I am delighted to hear that Peter Jackson (fellow Kiwi) managed to attend the last show. With The Hobbit stalled I suppose he’s looking for something to entertain himself.
Derren’s self-described failure to respond to Glee has taken him up another peg in my estimations. I would probably rather swallow my own head than watch Glee. Are my fellow commenters aware that the vocals on Glee are channeled through pitch-correction software? This means they could all be stunningly awful singers and we wouldn’t know. π
omfg poor Derren hahahaaaaa I can imagine your frustration at that tsk
But it must be funny looking back at it lol π it sure made me giggle π
poor you aww what a way to end the tour huh lol
hope you’re well & enjoying what you’re doing
take care love you xxx
(((hugs))) Chantelle
Hahaha! That story of you getting lost was absolutely hilarious! (Although, not so funny at the time for you, I’m sure). Can’t believe you’re straight into more work after such a long tour, you just never stop! Can’t wait for your new tv projects, they’ll be brilliant as always.
Dioni. xx
PS – Completely agree with you about ‘Glee’, (not something I’d ever get into myself) and ‘Damages’ is one of THE best programmes on tv ever!! I love it!
