The Events
Back home now, 3 am. The Events are now over and I want to thank everyone who tuned in over the last few weeks. Along the way, 20 million viewers tuned in – far more than any of us ever imagined – and I hope most of you enjoyed the shows. It’s been a real ride: I’ve had loads of fun making them, though I’m still reeling from tonight’s escapade. I called Ben as soon as I could and he doesn’t hate me, so I can sleep tonight.
Thank you again, all of you who watched or even took part in the interactive elements. Loads of love, and sweet dreams.
Derren x
Fantastic peice of television, please keep up the good work. Can’t wait for your next series
Helen, if there was a red 30 on the side of the truck (I don’t remember seeing it), the ball landed on 30 red!!!
Maybe he won him the money, but it’s best we think he didn’t or we’ll all be round Ben’s door with our caps in our hands…
… Well he had me fooled there!
The 30 on the bus HAS to mean something … right?
How could he possibly know that; i thought he had to work out the number by figuring out the speed of the wheel and the ball … ?
Dear God I’m so confused
Come on people, if you didn’t get it already then surely you’re catching on now. The red 30 proves that the casino section was pre-recorded. The winning number is put on the side on the truck as a hint.
If we were playing the national lottery would one off be amazing? Because I have done that before! Is one out any better than 20 out and if so why? Derren you are a fantastic entertainer, a very enjoyable series! This is a perfect example of why gambling is addictive. One out…. so close, maybe just one more spin.
Damn, Ive just figured it out. Good one DB.
Ridiculously impressed by tonight’s events, Derren you’re incredible! Can’t wait to see what you’ll do next…what an amazing series! See you on tour! x
Deffo think there’s a denouement to come…
Fantastic show. To be honest, most of the extra few million who tuned in sorely for the lottery explanation will have decided you’re not worth it now and gone.
And the rest of us carry on following the blog as ever : D
Good times.
Hi Derren, You were so amazing as per usual. It didn’t matter that it didn’t go to plan, you really did entertail me and surprise me.
Plus I met you this morning, I won’t say where 🙂 , but I said I’m a fan of your work, and that will never change.
Take care and will continue to look out for you.
If tonights program was live (the casino bits anyway) and the casino was in mainland europe, as Derren said, then why was the bet 5000, and not 5476 (or thereabouts). You don’t bet sterling – you bet euro’s!
UMMM !!! Whats going on – I think theres a twist in the tail.Could he really get away with taking a casino for £175,000. In similar shows were they take money from people or other establishments they always return the money, in this instance he was going to give it to one person. If he was going to succeed in the scheme like this surely he would have done it with the Lottery which he predicted(with considerly higher odds) but never entered. The plot thickens, don’t think we’ve heard the end of this
I was out tonight so I sky+ it.. shall watch it tomorrow. I’m sure it’ll be ace :):)
Great series, Derren!
Just loving all the conspiracy around this already! Derren, tonight was the best so far, everybody is talking about it, from the red 30 on the truck and the channel 4 website background ( the behind the event page) there is a bet on Black number 8. I am as baffled as I am in awe of your genius as ever. You are simply the best confounder and entertainer in the world today. Love you!!
Why is everyone impressed with tonight’s show? It was a total failure..Casinos aren’t gonna say “Well, you were one off, have the money anyway”..You have to get the exact number..That’s how roulette works..
Obviously, there’s the possibility that it was all intentional, as even more of a publicity stunt..I suppose if there IS a follow-up, I will watch it, but I still think you’re an ass…
From http://www.scienceofscams.com :
“We have all had the experience of believing something which has turned out to be untrue.”
ie. The Events actually worked..
Contd. in another post.
I don’t believe in this group lotto theory, otherwise everyone else would be doing it. I didn’t get stuck to my sofa, and don’t know anyone who did. Anybody who drew concentric circles at home would have been influenced by the concentric circles in her eyes. And the roulette..Well, that was just an epic fail.
I really hope you’re gonna pull something amazing outta the bag, Derren. Otherwise, I’m giving up.
Very, very clever.
It looks like you have 99% of Twitter successfully hoodwinked. I actually feel a sense of achievement after following the clues. Well played.
great TV, greatest showman for a long time…..but fake, and pretty clear at that. Don’t believe everything your eyes are led to see – follow the white rabbit.
hugely entertaining series and im pretty sure NOTHING we saw in any of the events (even supposed technical cock-ups) was accidental – im a media studies teacher and i think im going to use this as a case study – some interesting stuff in all these shows about audience perceptions and media language conventions being toyed with – personally i think thats what it has all been about rather than the events themselves – remember the original trailer did say it was 4 events of misdirection …
or maybe ive just been as fooled as everyone else ?
is the whole series one big misdirection?
First of let me start by saying we are watching a legend in the making here, along with huddenie David Copperfield etc, all the great entertaners.so well done derren on your achievements. this magic is old yes but the way its being use now is very new, but one thing got to me is he used 5000 “pounds” to win back 175,000 (180,000 total) pounds” but he was in the EU somewhere so how can he be playing for pounds when the currency is Euro?. I will never get to know the answer…lol But great shows, already watched the first clip of the new series
At the start of the show DB says he uses magic, psychology, misdirection, showmanship etc. Later on he contradicts this by saying he mentally computes the speed & direction of the ball and the wheel. Most people here seem to assume the second explanation, I prefer the first.
I’m sorry things didn’t go exactly to plan tonight but I can’t tell you enough how much watching your work has meant to me. Your show tonight still amazed me and I hope it hasn’t discourage you in anyway.
Can’t wait to see what you get up to next! Hopefully I’ll get the chance to see your Engima show. Lots of hugs for you and the rest of the team!
xx
This last event should have been called “How to.. Split the nation”. “Did he mean to?”, “Didn’t he?”, “But he managed task X”, “But he made X mistake”. Regardless of opinion, hearsay, psychic theorists or any other ideas that confused individuals are venting into the ether, the fact remains that the primary goal of this show was achieved wholly and unerringly.. PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT IT! Theorising, arguing or just dribbling and mumbling incoherently as their brain tries to come to terms with events they cannot comprehend. This man is a very accomplished magician and manipulator, don’t think for a second he’s done anything but that to us! If you could do it, would you tell everyone how? However you react to this is irrelevant and that makes him a even cleverer than he appears. Genius.
Hi Derren,
Bad luck with the roulette. I hope you’re not taking it too deeply: you’re a fantastic magician, and almost predicting which number will win using no computers is still an outstanding acheivment.
We all love you,
Natasha xxx
Hang on….is what people have been saying right? Have we been tricked AGAIN??? If so, when are we supposed to find out?
Fantastic series and unlucky with the roulette. Please promise that you will reveal everything some time in the future.
LOL!
Good job it weren’t the russian roulette stunt!! 😀 Smile, Derren.
What a show, and at least now you’ve made more people believe the things you’ve done before.
Found it quite unsettling, though, to hear you so upset at the end.
Here’s a cuddle for my fav illusionist and portrait painter – your book kicks some major ass.
Keep rocking.

Really impressed with tonight’s show: felt like we got a proper explanation of the roulette scam, as long as it wasn’t more misdirection… If Derren is indeed using sound physical formulae to work out these outcomes then it really does show the immense power of the human brain. Shame about the first show though: nice hour-long fairy-tale about group estimation applied to random numbers, but given all his efforts to disprove psychics and all the other charlatans making a fortune at the expense of innocent, vulnerable people, it was always going to grate when he cheekily sold us a shaggy dog story to cover up some clever techinical ruse to “predict” the lottery…
See you on tour…
Derren, you are a wonderful and terrifying man! I don’t kow how you do the things you do but I love you for it. Friday nights are now going to be back to being ultra boring. I am still amazed that I got stuck in my seat for ages during the Control The Nation show. Awesome! Not sure about the casino thing…it’s making my head hurt trying to work it all out! Can’t wait for the Sunderland show next year. 🙂
I couldn’t really call him a falure insanimation, lol.
Just because you don’t believe he won the lottery through group prediction. Which actually was connected subconscious, which you know nothing of. And the sofa, there were plenty people who did, nubs, including me. One thing I agree on, the psychic one.. Well, that was all a stupid ‘cover up’. We all have these abilities, they are natural, most of the things he performs, is just what ‘psychics’ do without knowing, most to a whole new extent, he just understands the logical reasons HOW it’s done. Our brains are capable of much more than we know, he’s just figured out a nice chunk. I don’t think he can rightfuly dismiss some of the things psychics do, it’s basically because he can’t find the logic behind it.
Derren, your showmanship as usual is second to none, the work and research you have put into your shows never fails entertain me and millions of others, you have been a constant inspiration to me throughout my adult life to absorb as much information about human behaviour and thought patterns as i can and i hope to use it in the future in my new career (Hypnotherapy) to great success, i hope to meet you in person one day to share a drink and a conversation. Keep up the brilliant work and thank you for all you have done.
It’s funny how many people are offering their condolences, as if Derren’s sat outside the casino in tears. Derren doesn’t ‘lose’. And as if he was just going to give £180,000 to some guy called Ben with really bad sweat patches. I wonder if Ben didn’t know about it all along too because when Derren phoned him and he was watching the show he would have seen on the screen that someone was outside his window filming him, yet he didn’t seem too bothered about that. He didn’t really react to anything. Strange.
I am just glad that you have the ‘ball’s to admit when you get something wrong, one out and we understand – you are only human at the end of the day, (I think?). 😛
…
There are people who think that this wasn’t all intentional?
I guess most of you missed the large 30 written on the side of one of the trucks then…
Especially you people who seem to be revelling in him being ‘wrong’.
Peter Seaman has a good point: very good chance that this is all misdirection; with all the smoke and mirrors, it’s difficult to work out how things are done (apart from the conentric circles – that seemed too obvious to draw, although the missus got the triangle pattern on the bridge behind the curator next to the river). I digress…
I wonder if Derren ever worries that his more “intense” afficionados will succumb to the overwhelming urge to kidnap him and remove various digits one-by-one until he agrees to reveal his secrets?
The roulette was prerecorded camera trickery. The big red 30 and the check proves it. Throughout the events he has lied – e.g. in the split screen camera for the lottery. His work has many layers to it, but what it all boils down to is misdirection. None of the explanations for anything hold any water. I have read pure effect and all DBs books and all the underground magic videos. it was a good performance by a talented hypnotist and magician, nothing more.
The whole events have seemed…lacklustre. The lottery prediction explanation was clearly crap. The stunt itself most likely the split screen. Sofa sticking, well, I’ve not yet met anyone it DID work on, but meh. Psychic spy? Did not really do anything for me. Tonights lottery seemed wrong. I suspect a stooge, and quite frankly the whole casino thing was off.
I cannot wait to see you live, but this series was not what I had hoped for, too much bull**** from you, for reasons I cannot fathom. Had hoped it was all a build up to some stroke of genius.
The whole series was one big misdirection.
We were led to believe that this guy would win £180,000, and right at the end he’s one out and loses it all.
Goes to show we should expect the unexpected.
Tonights show,an elaborate ruse? What have you lined up for the future or was it to pass with more umm shall we say affect the events of the past?I hope its future orientated and you have something splendidly unbelieavble lined up.
p.s love your book, read it ppl if u have not
Loving the different header…..glad you’re not taking it all too seriously, Derren! 😀
LC x
I don’t believe for a second tonight’s ‘failure’ was genuine. But it adds to the effect and makes the other Events seem more ‘real’.
Felt the middle 2 Events were by far the better of the 4.
Sad that it’s all finished now. Overall, from the fantastic build up – the little clues in the ads, the hidden messages and hidden sites, to the shows themselves – it’s all been a hell of a lot of fun. 😀
Simply the best ever ending to a series. Don’t know if Derren meant to miss by one but I’m glad it all ended with a twist! Now off to Science of Scams for some more Derren action!
PS: As I write this the science of scams advert has just come on the tv. Oh the irony.
The series has been rubbish…..
the final 5 minutes of the show just confirmed this !
although, i have watched all your shows, and with the ammount of press you are going to get in the papers tomorrow… i suppose your still the winner really.
Maybe Brown has realised that he has pulled so many rabbits out of the hat that nothing he does supprises anymore. Perhaps this was just a way of pressing the reset button.
There was a 30 on the first truck door from the live feed and Westwood came out with the number 30 when they were standing on the bridge which seemed a little random considering the road conditions.
You’re so funny Derren, you blooming tap dancing, mathematical modelling in your head, holding camera in your sleeve steady, putting 5k on 8 without pit boss attracting genius. And you didn’t have to give the man you took the money from two hundred grand. Lol. Never thought I’d see you follow Paul Daniel’s advice tho. Tee hee. Loved the show, especially the ending. Very Blair Witch. Not everyone will get it. http://nicolamonaghan.blogspot.com/2009/10/funniest-thing-i-have-ever-seen-on-tv.html
Omg what a bizarre ending…
i agree with some of the other user’s comments, kinda left me feeling like you had guessed wrong on purpose… plus the guy who told ben he’l get the money bank sounded…fake…
was just too weird for me…real or fake…still love you Derren.
i once ate an apple on a bus whilst a horse walked by
aslo drreen waht was yuor wrsot mmonet in yuor craeer. for emaxlpe did u eevr sooht a monkey? that would be pretty sad 🙁
