“He can make nice people do rather nasty things” – what a quote!

I don’t think David Frost actually knew who you were then lol.

    Always guaranteed to impress.

I’ve seen DB in many interviews but none of them until now have seemed so dull – is that just the way DF is all the time?

    Stick to richard and judy!

    Really enjoyable interview.

I agree Warren, i don’t think David actually knew who Derren was! .. This interview frustrates me a little because Derren adeptly fends off the question about whether there was actually any danger involved during ‘Russian Roullette’… does the lack of a “Yes” from Derren suggest that there wasn’t any danger involved at all??

Poor old Frosty clearly never heard of the IPA either, nor that the “s” phoneme is articulated in an entirely deifferent place from the “k” phoneme but hey-ho I guess he was being generous. Highlight for me is Derren’s enormous grin for the viewing world at the introduction. Grats on keeping your head from seperating in half muppet style Derren 🙂

David Frost looks Mr Inscrutable there. You would get more sense and straight answers out of Fu Manchu. 🙂 An interesting sequence.

Shame Derren keeps having to answer the same old questions. I was a bit disapointed with Frost admitting he thinks Uri Gellar is probably psychic. I always thought Frost was supposed to be intelligent. I noticed Derren repeatedly pointing out what he does isn’t psychic after that. I can just see Frost ignoring most of what was said and dozily going “Derren Brown the psychic, on at the Adelphi now…”

So, something to look, forward then (?), Frost and Brown. No clue who Frost is, but hey, anyone who says Uri is psychic .. (did he say why he thinks he is psychic … always curious to hear their reasoning, if there is any, that is). Oh well, I will see.

People who say they are not psychics have to proof this. Tell me how you do all things … that’s probably Frost his idea.

I dont want to use brain (says Frost telepathically), so tell me …

Psychics normally dont bend spoons as far as I know .. so where the claim psychic comes from then?

I’m psychic .. just ask me question and I will give you the answers to it. It might not always be the answers you wanted to hear, but hey …. then you should not ask me questions of which you already knew the answer …
    Nah ..

I found Derren behaving much more confident, than he did few years ago on interviews. But Frost is soooo boring. The questions like “How did you do it?” must bug Derren so much…

  19. craigelliott
    22 June 2009

as someone introduced to Uri Geller as akid via frosts shows, i find this a little hard to stomach. Frost bought into Uri and sold it on to the rest of us as some sort of proof of psychic ability, but treats the real deal in more ways than one as some sort of parlour trick (ironis isn’t it the way the languge reverses as thr truth is revealed). Derren Dawkins and Rhandi will always be true heroes to me.

    22 June 2009

i think they need to revitalise the little mice that now work mr.frost…

if you think blanks don’t kill – ask the dead actor/son of bruce, brandon lee about it…ironically, through a medium…

you could argue that psychic means any form of mental prowess…rather than the catch-all hollywood definition of it…

  21. Josh
    22 June 2009

David Frost is only good when Michael Sheen in playing him. When he’s himself he is boring and emotionless.

  22. unmevsworld
    22 June 2009

That frustrated me. I don’t like to see Derren acting like a politician and NOT answering the question, not only once but twice. First about which is most important, magic, psychology, showmanship, etc. (I thought showmanship was a no-brainer answer, but that might have seemed arrogant.). Then, not answering the roulette danger question. I think he has said yes to that question in other interviews.
    Good save on Milan.
Poor Frost, admitting to DB that he thinks Geller might actually be psychic.

    22 June 2009

    Interesting interview

Love how you just go round the questions without answering them, you should have gone into politics.

Started off cool as a cucumber, but signs of nerves creeping in after couple of minutes, did you maybe realise that Frost’s face is really expressionless droopy and difficult to read? it must have been hard to get anything out of him!

    22 June 2009

Poor guy (Derren) looks exhausted 🙁

Beginning to feel bad now about going to see him this weekend, Looks like he could do with the rest 🙁

    22 June 2009

For those of you much too young to remember, David Frost was all the go in the sixties. Imagine someone a bit like Chris Morris crossed with Angus Deayton. However, going by this interview he looks like he’s only walking around to save funeral expenses these days.

  26. Magnus
    22 June 2009

    Derren
You looked good, spoke well , its a pleasure to watch you.
    Love it when you smile

    well done

  27. Kernow Kid
    22 June 2009

Such a pity old Frost is past it.
It looked like Derren was having a hard time reading him, but then it looked like David was pretty confused about the whole thing as well.
Being able to “Mind Read” is only possible if there is a mind to read.
Frost has been a soft interviewer for the last decade or so, and it must be hard for a genius like Derren to respond to such bland questions.
I’d like to see him head to head with Paxman; a real battle of the brains.

  28. Jim
    22 June 2009

Not surprised Frost said he thought Geller was real – He presented a whole show based around his parlour tricks that was particularly credulous.

My favourite moment, near the end, followed someone doing some firewalking, spouting the usual nonsense about positive mental attitude. Frost asked the token scientist back in the studio ‘So how can science explain that?’

‘Quite easily’ replied the scientist, explaining a little about the low thermal conductivity of coal.

‘Aha! But would you be prepared to put your faith in your science?’ asked Frost.

‘Certainly’ said the scientist, something I don’t think they’d planned for because he was still inside the studio and Frost and the firewalker were outside. He walked out side, pulled off his shoes and socks and strode confidently across the blazing coals. The ‘firewalker’ looked a little crestfallen, and mumbled something about ‘Well he still needed a positive mental attitude’.

After a whole programme shamelessly presenting psychic nonsense as real, it was a small victory for empirical thinking.

    22 June 2009

I watched one minute and 22 seconds of this and I cracked up laughing. I started to lose it at the bit about dodging bullets and the emphasis in “he SAYS he’s not psychic” and the part where after the careful statement about not being psychic, Frost follows up with a blunt “so can you read minds?” was too much. I died.
Okay, I went back into it and got to the part where this guy pretty much responds to that with “But Uri Geller’s psychic” (paraphrased). You’re all wrong. David Frost is not an idiot, an epic troll and is trying to wind this poor guy up.
Final comment: HOLY CRAP HOW DID HE KNOW THAT GUY WAS THINKING ABOUT MILAN THAT IS SCARY

    22 June 2009

Eek, didn’t like this at all… just felt a bit cringy, especially the cigarette bit. Although Derren looked lovely as usual. ;o)

    xx

  31. Berber Anna
    22 June 2009

Haha, I totally recognize the ‘taking toys apart’ bit… I remember my gran being totally horrified when she gave me a doll that could blink its eyes and I immediately took it apart to see how that worked (then shoved it at my father… ‘daddy fix!’). Actually, I also took apart the heads of barbecued fish to see how those looked on the inside (then played marbles with the eyes). Yeah, I was kind of a weird kid.

Frost is being somewhat annoying, though. Does he not know it’s bad form to ask magicians their secrets? The Milan bit was nice, though. Although saying people always give off clues as to what they’re thinking of doesn’t sound that convincing after the cigar thing… that was really too bad.

  32. unmevsworld

Who was on the show after Derren?

  33. iain
    23 June 2009

if you can be bothered to, read the peter cook biography – you\’ll gain some venomous, bilious insight into david frost!

i was waiting for him to say “here we have next, dunninger brown…”

oooh and a new beard for mr. brown is it? just a subtle change…

  34. Michael McG
    23 June 2009

That was a little uninspiring, but then I guess it always is going to be when the host says “Can you show us a trick?”…it’s like having a comedian on and saying “Tell us a joke”.

I think I preferred Frost’s Nixon interview! ;oP

  35. Kevin
    23 June 2009

Was hoping DB would call DF on his “I think Uri Geller probably does have powers” comment. Maybe next time.

Derren = Lovely, polite, interesting and looking fabulous.

    Frosty= Dull, dull, dull.

Never been a Frost fan, mind.

    23 June 2009

I wonder… Do they need to re-animate Mr Frost every morning? 😉

The best thing about this interview is obviously Derren.
I agree fully that when you go to one of his live shows and especially when you experience first-hand Derren’s awesome ‘mind reading’ abilities it really does blow you away.

I was fortunate enough to be one of his ‘Oracle’ participants a while back. He announced things as though he was reading more than the card I had written on!
Before even focussing on me, he seemed to know what I ‘yelled’ in my head, causing him to change his previous statement and repeat what I’d just thought.
Very spooky and mind blowing (litterally… my mind felt like it was on fire… maybe I should get that checked 😉 )!

If you’re ever local(ish) again D and I have the cash, I will be coming to another show (I know what you’re thinking.. oh goodie, haha 😛 )

    ____________________________________________________

Russian roulette: “… choose one now…” don’t know why I brought that up 😉
(P.S. Non-professional performers: Always use a revolver, another handgun… a Glock 17L for example, wouldn’t achieve the desired result)

Stay well & peace people 🙂

I rather enjoyed this different interview. It is nothing less than amazing that Derren boldly chooses to demonstrate effects that can “miss” even when performing on live television! For the most part, it’s a gamble that serves him well. After all, at his level of mastery he does have uncanny success rates with his psychological illusions.

Almost any other performer in this position would grab a deck of cards when asked to provide a demonstration for live TV. Derren is so brilliant with his cardistry that he could dazzle you right out of your chair and leave almost no chance of missing anything. But he doesn’t, because he’s more interested in life without a net these days.

Bravo Derren. I’m almost exactly your age, and share many of your interests, if only a fraction of your talent. While I know how tempting it is to re-think your entire life at this age (you’ve mentioned it in a few spots lately), I hope you’ll keep more or less along your current path, as you’ve brought a lot of joy and wonder back to a world with woefully insufficient doses of either. Keep them thinking, and keep at the game you play with your audience… your obscenely good at it.

As long as I’m in shameless fan mode… Derren’s new portrait book was my Father’s Day gift, imported from the UK of course, and it’s wonderful.

Thanks for posting as usual Abeo! XX

    Quite lack lustre interview.

Stupid David Frost, thinking of Milan when he doesn’t know what Milan looks like! Makes Derren look even more impressive tho!
Must be more difficult to read a saggy face! (I assume i’m safe to say that as David doesn’t strike me as a DVB blogger!) XX

    23 June 2009

I’m checking the non verbal version now (no audio here, so I have no vision but no audio .. quite interesting how much more fhe focus in on their faces and behaviour though … I already saw a few things .. which made me think … NOOO, that can’t be true what you are saying now … And the start was weird .. why was frost (how old is the guy? Is it still safe to be on tv for him, does his words still make sense? .. .I mean .. what the hell was he looking for at the start (was he testing his mic or what???).

Anyhow .. I have no clue what the interview is about till sofar …. that will be tomorrow afternoon then I guess … as I’m now thinking .. maybe I should take the afternoon off and do some real work at home … Does not make sense? Oh well … are you that intelligent that it should make sense? If you read till here .. I’m having doubts … ehehehe … nah, not really …

    23 June 2009

Okay I feel bad for laughing because that interviewer really was kind of a dick, but I can’t help it. It’s just so surreal.
*massive explanation of why he isn’t psychic*
“But Uri Geller says he has psychic powers, he probably does, you don’t go into that area?”
I think the best part of that is the massive pause in Frost’s statement after “don’t”, making it sound like he’s pretty much bitching at this poor guy for not being psychic like Uri Geller.

  43. Steve
    23 June 2009

    Right at the end:
“Its a pleasure to have us with you – have you with us!”
“Pleasure to have – to see you two. Thank you so much!”

What happened THEN? Was that derren doing an exceedingly quick piss-take or did you just both screw up your lines?

  44. Berber Anna
    23 June 2009

Steve: I think that was a ‘too’, not a ‘two’. The ‘us’ probably refers to the interviewer and the viewing audience; I’ve heard TV hosts use it before.

I wish I had my own talk show so I could interview Derren. I wouldn’t ask him to perform any tricks just have nice chat. Because I do find him so fascinating I don’t think it would be too hard to have a discussion without asking him to perform once.

  49. Ms G
    24 June 2009

Finally heard it. As always derren softens my brain, does not depress but softens .. (it’s the other system .. ) … (combi voice and visual system necessary though) (guards up that means).

Although it is ofcourse more or less a routine for Derren it was not bad to watch. Frost was quite cooperative, and why shouldn’t he. After all, it’s not about him but the viewers.

Doesn’t he have an incredible nice nose? It seems not to fit his personality but ….

  50. ricoculous
    25 June 2009

    5 min 8 seconds:
Frost: “My picture of Milan is of José Mourinho”
Brown: “Ok, a place that you know well I’m sure”.

Erm, yes. I hope that was deliberate, but it received a wry smile in any case.
