Just a little reminder that the second episode in ‘The Experiments’ series airs tonight at 9pm on Channel 4.

Love the glasses over the mask 2 back from Derren. You never saw that on V for Vendetta. 🙂
heh i didnt notice Derren in the middle with so many masks!!
I can’t wait for tonight’s show. Last week blew me away, as usual, you clever, clever bastard! Try as I might to learn your tricks and work out what is going on in your mind, just as I think I have you all figured out, you pull something amazing out of the bag AGAIN!
not only that but everyone is looking straight but the guy next to the girl with glasses is looking through you.
Haha Spike.
But on the subject of the show, with the masks and group mentality, their moral compasses will be different from on their own without the mask as with the masks, they loose their sense of individualisation. An example (albeit an extreme one) is the KKK.
still trying to work out the earlier one where he could have jumped out the window…
Love the fact you are interacting Derren. Great idea tonight. Can’t wait to see how it goes. Dougie (keeping his top on). My captcha code was f 2 u 4.
Derren Brown has highly developed supernatural demonic powers; notheless he is extremely clever, fascinating and intriguing. In fact I would love to participate in one of his shows. Does anyone know how can I apply to be part of audience/participant?
talk about lead them on to make bade things happen to him! you should of made them feel sorry for him to see if they still do the bad stuff to him!
I have a feeling we’re the audience being manipulated into letting something go too far… great show so far
LOL at myself – I have worked it out now.
Notice how the bad answer is always B
I am a fan but I am afraid that I have just voted with my finger and stopped watching this program, very disturbing and not my idea of entertainment.
Dont know why, just feels like they are all actors including Chris. I thought you couldn’t arrest or accuse some one of shop lifting until they have left the premises with the items? Still interesting to see how they are voting, we are all basically evil!
“Underwear Drawer”? .. or was it … “Move The Legs!” ?
Dai
Deeply disturbing viewing. Chilling, in fact.
Thanks.
So good Derren, really good and an interesting look on how we are!My god the crowd looked so guilty at the end!Deadly!
Incredible, Derren..like a modern day Milgram experiment, loved it!
Powerful stuff! Very entertaining (if that is the right word).
Loved the show and just show what human beings are capable of, only problem is my daughter burst into tears when the guy got hit by the car at the end.
Shows how easily persuaded we as the human race can be!
Just finished watching this and it really freaked me out how easy it is for people to make horrid decsions so fast. I was willing for something nice to happen to him. When he got hit by that car i felt sick and just wanted to know he was ok.
He was wrong. He said as the show continued they acted more like a pack & lost their individuality, but the % votes for negative experiences went DOWN. The first vote, for the pinchy ass girl was 80% or thereabouts but later ones, the shoplifting & the arrest were only 65% or so. There were also 2 that he didn’t mention the % for I’d guess the majority vote for bad times was miniscule in these instances. They didn’t act more like faceless crowd as it wen’t on, they acted less like one. The percentages prove it. Myth Busted.
love everything u do!u r awesome!,hope to meet u one day (soon).
Is the voting data going to become available? Did people increasingly vote with the mob?
Quite inspiring. Hopefully society will change or question their actions after seeing this. Not only by rioting, but by the need to realise not to abject the abnormal…. A normal society inflicting pain on the abnormal others. A very awakening realisation on our choices and behaviours.
Blew Me Away!
Loved it!

Just watched tonights show and found it extremely interesting and very frightening. The majority voted negatively but there was a small number who didn’t, they wanted the best (albeit at times) to happen to the subject of the experiment. What makes these people different from the mob mentality? Maybe they were the more brighter ones who worked out at the very beginning, that the audience was the subject matter. Clearly I seem to be more interested in those people who didn’t react in the same way. Overall I thought the show very thought provoking bearing in mind it is my first experience of the work of this incredible Darren Brown.
Thought it was a really good show. I was shocked at how far the audience would go, in so far as to wreck his house. It was also interesting to see their reactions. I would be interested to know more about the results from the audience, like age ranges etc.
I knew that the last few minutes were going to be fake though as soon as Derren said “For the next 50 minutes, what you will see is real” as Orson Welles used the same trick when he did F for Fake. Thought it was a nice nod.
One of your best. Very interesting, albeit very disturbing.
Amazing show tonight. Facinating yet terrifying at the same time – it makes you wonder if that’s going to be you.
The end was especially awesome. To see their reaction after such a climatic hype when they were cheering for his possessions to get destroyed was intense.
It makes me wonder what’s going on in their minds now that the cameras have been shut off.
This is definitely something we need to bear in mind. As a Psychology student we’ve done studies on things similar to this, and as entertaining as it is, it’s terrifying, especially because not succumbing to that form of behaviour is easier said than done.
Thank you incredibly much for this show tonight! 🙂
There’s so much more to say about this show but I can’t quite find the words to say.
Just watched the show. You are an incredible entertainer, but much more than that. You are making extraordinary, thought-provoking television. Keep fighting the good fight against the charlatans, the chancers and the dim-witted.
Omg that was awesome Thought he actually got run over you awesome derren : ) hekdbsosnnbkbshshsjsjsbsksbjsksbsjsosn
Faceless crowds have been the same since the dawn of society, this was just a novel way of explaining it to the masses, something which has needed to be done for a while, since the general mainstream media have sensationalized every riot, protest or street war ever.
This, and the national lottery predictions from a while back, are irrefutable proof that a crowd is logical yet unfeeling, whereas a single persons’ logic is often marred by emotions… A subtle balance would be a group of no more than 5 Vulcans… LOL
Would love to know the science behind it all. Worrying that human nature in relatively ‘nice’ people could cause horror like this. What does it take to push somebody over the edge? Nice lesson in morality. Enlightening show. Thanks. Hope Kris recovered from it all!!!!
Bravo bravo. Well done. Just shows what people will put a man throuh in the name of entertainment. Bet some may think he’s all right it’s just a game, shame on you. It’s not a mob mentallity,” it’s better to see someone suffer to make me feel good”. That just sucks. life is not a game, people hurt. In more way than you think.
Just goes to show we really have not advanced at all from the crowds of the gladiatorial arenas of ancient Rome. But was a really brilliant show, incredibly uncomfortable to watch particularly towards the end but it is as a uncomfortable subject for us to see the true dark side of our nature that can only be expected. The audience looked completely devastated at the end and I almost had to laugh at the complaints about continuing to film them, obviously didn’t like the feelings of giult much!
This is all completely ridiculous. This was not a “genuine, unfaked” experiment. Is this man licensed to conduct potentially damaging psychological experiments? I think not. Every single one of his “unsuspecting” audience members and participants is an actor. I know this because every single one of his audience members would have had to undergo a full debrief, interview and psychological evaluation to ensure that none of them suffered long term psychological damage after having just seen what they thought was a member of the public being hit by a car. There are massive ethical issues. This in no way goes any length to explain the psychology of mob mentality as the audience members (were they in fact genuine at all) were under the belief that they were participating in a television show. Of course any genuine audience member would opt for the more entertaining and comical option which turned out to be the negative option. They would be acting under the belief that a television show would not actually allow any real harm to come to an “unsuspecting” member of the public. Total rubbish.
Can’t say that was my favourite one. It was a bit “meh”.
Last week’s was much better.
lol i actually thought he had been hit by a car
how can people doubt derren
people say he just does it for tele and everything is fake however i have been lucky enough to be in an audience of derren brown (evening of wonders)
and i was lucky enough to take part in one of his tricks (20 questions)
whoever doubts this man should fuck themselves as i have witnessed him up close and there is no one better in the world
“Dont know why, just feels like they are all actors including Chris. I thought you couldn’t arrest or accuse some one of shop lifting until they have left the premises with the items? ” Absolutely right you can’t. The person has to actually leave the premises before you can even accuse them. Also it’s unlikely a store would call the police for what he took? I agree the whole film was a set up & Chris an actor. As for the way the crowd voted, it was all played that the bad choices would be jolly good fun & “Chris” was set up as being a bit of an ass. The audience were certainly led into the first choice by the mention of him cheating on his girlfriend just before they made the decision.
Must be honest, didn’t find this your most thrilling work: a gameshow is way too artificial an environment to get a genuine result. People *know* gameshows are a set up. The first and last 10 minutes were awesome (what about throwing yourself through a door and off a ledge – that made me go wow!) – and the looks on the faces of the audience at the end were a picture. But the rest, nah. Looking forward to next week’s show upping the ante 🙂
Derren,
Even though as a viewer I suspected something fishy (like his work colleague was blatently an actress), I was home alone and not in a ‘mob’ so understand how the audience might have seen things differently.
However, I suspect a great deal of this was not necessarily jusrt ‘mob mentality’ but social loafing and peer pressure. Social loafing in that “surely the program makers will step in if needs be, I don’t need to do anything”. Peer pressure due to the fact they are a TV audience and feel they have to contribute to making good tv. Plus a little suggestability to tip it over the 50% majority needed by your cheeky deminour enticing them to the bad options each time.
Nonetheless, a fantastic show and so pleased you cleverly made up for this poor guys day!
I was part of the audience on this…..!!!! It was a fantastic show..total shocker at the end but very thought provoking. I wasn’t evil the whole way through. Makes you think though x
Also we were told that if the audience had picked the “good” outcomes then that’s what would have happened, but is any production company going to go to the time, money & effort of filming that stunt if there is a chance it won’t be used. My feeling is the votes were manipulated, either artificially or, & for me this is more likely (& less disappointing) the audience were not voting in the way they wanted to but were manipulated into voting the way Derren wanted them to, which was the real experiment. Or it was all a big hoax but a decent bit of entertainment.
@Andy
Seconded! I would love to see the statistics too.
Were big fans, read the books and seen some shows. But this was more Big Brother than Mind Control.
Depressing reality TV, reflecting how easy it is to whip up a crowd into destructive behaviour. I feel Chris could have probably done with a bit of company after his ordeal. Did he just get a letter or a debrief? I wonder what he would do to the audience?
Not a real experiment – upmarket candid camera
That show was greatly done Derren. You and your team done well in making people open their eyes across the whole country to just how cruel they can be. I hope the show has drummed something in to people to be themselves and not become pack animals. In some respect everyone in the audience had a degree of gameshow allowance in them – as it was a game they may of had that reserved feeling that all was safe. If we did not act with pack instinct we would be living in a much better place. Welldone again. With you on the impact moments. Very effective.
agree wholeheartedly with abi road
I started off laughing & thinking how much fun the show was. But as it went on, the smile started slipping & I was thinking, “No way, I wouldn’t choose the B option this time.” And I felt more & more sorry for poor Kris…
But as I was watching the show alone & wasn’t part of a crowd, who’s to say whether my options would have changed in the company of others?
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the show very much. It cleverly highlighted how our cruel tendencies can materialise in certain situations. But I confess to feeling more & more uncomfortable as the show progressed. My pity went from Kris & then to the audience as towards the end they came to realise that the choices they’d made weren’t such fun & games after all….
LC x
Mr Brown, you are a legend!!
Its a sorry state we’re in when a majority can only wish ill upon their fellow man! I’d have stood up in the audience and laughed as I would have voted for the Happy ending! People forget they affect peoples lives every single day.. how bout if the roles were reversed, would such evil thoughts run through your mind Then I wonder.. 🙂 excellent programming! :Dark xx
