Derren Brown: Hero at 30,000 Feet – Tonight at 10pm on Channel 4
Hero at 30,000 Feet is on tonight at 10pm on Channel 4.
#DerrenBrownHero is being used for discussion on Twitter and Derren reports he’s now on location:
Very excited. Am with the plane getting ready for live links. http://twitpic.com/2mhn1k

Enjoy the show!
Wow! Truly inspiring stuff!! I’ve been interested in hypnosis and persuasion techniques for quite a while, but never had the confidence to believe that I could use them. Tonight’s show is proof positive that they can work. I now intend to experiment with them and try them out as often as I can.
The theme of “One life, live it now” is awesomely empowering, I feel like taking risks!!
Incredible show, so compelling, left me feeling both inspired and emotional. Everything I see Derren do keeps me utterly gripped, where do I sign up Derren I could do with an injection of motivation in my life.
Very very impressive.. and so relevant to many many people these days. You were absolutely right that his journey will have inspired lots of people..
I am a sixth from tutor in a school – and am really hopeful that tomorrow morning they will be discussing it as it is so relevant to them as they try and fail to make decisive decisions about thier future.. many are paralysed by fear of a wrong choice and so don’t choose.. 🙁
On a seperate issue.. it is actually perfectly possible for random joe blogs to land a plane under instruction from ATC. the US tv show “mythbusters” prooved it in a very simular expt a few years back..

Good stuff, especially as I knew matt was genuine, due to being stood with him in the queue at the first selection meeting in July.
God help you if I’m next on your list Mr Brown 🙂
Will there be a follow up to see how much Matt’s life has changed? The only reason I ask is to see if “suggestion” did more than “choice”.
Hi Derren and Team, Absolute class! Had tears rolling down my face. Awesome!!!
Derren, you sweetheart! 😀 That was such a moving programme! (For an atheist, you were sounding almost gospel in places.) This is going to make me sound like a complete weirdo, I know, but whichever member of the team happens to read this, tell Derren ‘Blessed Be’…and that he’s lovely!
What an incredible show. It moved me to tears and has changed my life in the process. Thanks Derren.
Do you think this would have worked if it had been someone who was married and has children?
After all, it’s easier for a single person with few ties to make such life changing decisions.
For those of us with both financial and parental responsiblities you can’t do those things without putting it all on the line.
For example, I’d love to be an actor, rather than do what I do.
However, I can’t just decide to go and drop my current job or I’d lose house, wife and kids.
I’m guessing it was his intention to inspire people to live their lives to the full and it totally worked, for me at least. Like derren said – to many of us just let’s our lives pass us by and we forget what wonderful opportunities we’re offered every day. Thank you so much, Derren for giving me the motivation to get up and make something of my life… Also thanks for giving me a possible fear of flying… 😉
Hey Simon! If you wanted to be an actor you would be an actor. I’m sure there are local drama groups that do plays and stuff at weekends and evenings. Its a bit like when you meet someone how says they want to be a writer. What have you written? Nothing. Then you dont want to be a writer. You dont have to give up your wife, kids and house to be an actor, it ridicoulous. Almost as ridicolous as using it as an excuse not to do something so you can blame them when your old and bitter about your life. Just get off you ass in the evenings and do it, instead of watching TV.
fantastic piece of television this is why mr derren brown is my idol i thank you well done matt also
@Simon
It may be that becoming an actor would be difficult, but that’s besides the point. Look at the courses of action he chose. Take the inspiring talk to the van driver and party – out of an ordinary situation of talking to a van driver he threw a party for his street. All the preconceptions of not wanting to step out of the acceptable norm shackle us, but he chose to knock on strangers’ doors to invite them to a party. I’m not saying leave your wife and kids to become an actor, but how about acting classes, applying for parts as an extra, auditions, sending your cv to agents, doing some writing of your own. Have these been done? Do all actors start off with that as their full time job or as a bit on the side whilst getting by how they can? In the words of Nike ‘Just do it.’
I’ve watched many shows by Derren and been intrigued, mystified and astounded by some of the things I’ve seen, but this show (
Hero at 30,000 Feet) stands out above all the rest by a mile, because it moved me as well as all of the above. There was something we could all learn, I suspect, from watching another’s progress from ordinary to hero. Congratulations, Mr Brown, on using your talents in such a creatively entertaining and inspiring way. It was Brilliant!
@Ayden
Your comment beat me to it! I spent too much time thinking of a witty replyand not writing!!!
Lesson learnt.
This was silly…. the government/police would never have let that plane in the air!
hmm. I preferred the investigates. Seemed more real. More of that please.
OMG Derren once again U’ve left me amazed Truly I’m still in shock Exciting the whole way through. My son stayed up to watch it we are huge fans he was bittin his nails throughout (the train track really did it for him). I would just like to say TANX for been an inspiration to all those who believe anything is possible 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 Oooh BTW out of all the 300,000 sperm U were the one that made it through U R the Miricale and Thank U for making us part of Ur life and Journey 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
Finn
Xxoxoxo
Can’t WAIT for the next Event X
Avril Nolan … I have met him and seen his live shows… And I have to say this gentle-man is a lovely person inside and out
Derren your shows inspire me. I would give anything for you to show me what I have inside me. I just can’t seem to release my own energy inside! I would love to be a candidate for your show! You have an incredible talent. Well done Mr Brown. Top notch!
08/09/10 11:12 Derren Brown, the greatest showman on Earth
Susan, pretty suprising that an investigation seems more real than making someone believe that they are piloting a 747 and imagine that they are dreaming when they are in fact talking to someone in ther back garden.
Amazing! If i really tell my subconscience that i Will marry Derren Brown, will it happen? Whatever happened to the girl that pressed the button on the little kitten cage?
Rhona, you would need a sex change first. Unless you are already a man, LOL. I know where you’re coming from though! *wink*
Susan I don’t think it gets more real than this. *scratches head*
John Salis – well, I’ll just roll my eyeballs at that comment.
Seen Derren live and everything he does is totally real, although at the same time it is very hard to believe what is happening before your very eyes. Mind boggling.
Bloody excellent Derren, can’t wait for the next one. Whoooop!
I can’t buy into this. I’m an Airline Pilot for a living and can say the timing between landing that aircraft and getting to the simulator hall where those simulators are base is a long stretch. The cabin crew in the shots had time to change clothes, as did Derron. The sim cued up etc. I just can’t buy into it. In reality such a transfer from aircraft to car/van/taxi to where the sims is would require the guy to be tranqualised no hypnotised due to the length of journey and disruption. There were a lot of techincal bluffs too not to mention the already stated fact of day turning into night. For example. If you were asked to lower the landing gear I doubt you’d respond “the one with DN ?” You’d not even know where to look let alone find and read the annotation below the gear lever.
Inspirational maybe – but I am a doubter – the girlfriend was too gorgeous, the pen and paper for 2 hours scribbling appeared from no where, and a £400 mobile phone! Did he get it back after the robbery then?- he was using one at some point later on. I wasnt conviced a guy like ‘Matt’ would actually enter the police officer’s ‘home’ – and not wonder about an alarm system. I suspect he was seen (placed) at auditions because they filmed the auditions for the live show to look convincing.
It was good tv though – for sure.
Sorry for the typing errors. My very slow connection seems to make the cursor stick. Very annoying. I should add though that I admire the message of this show and it can only stand for a good thing if people draw postives out of it.
Wow is there anything you can’t do, loved the show this evening!! 🙂
Your best project yet!!!!
Can’t wait for your next stage show in Birmingham 🙂
xxx
I thought the most amazing part of this was the robbery at the petrol station.
Something like that would seriously kickstart anyones head.
It did get me thinking though, how would things have transpired if after realising he only has one life to make a difference, he decided to face his fears and admit to being gay or wanting a sex change or having repressed memories of childhood abuse or something totally unexpected?
How would Derren have neatly woven that into the show?
It just didn’t ring true. Who would throw a street party with that stuff? Weird reaction. Why would you volunteer to fly the plane, when there are staff on the plane who could bring the plane in, as well as any member of the public? It may well have happened as he said, but it was too odd to ring true.
And I’m a huge Derren fan.
can you tell me when its going to be repeated as i missed it due to work and am desperate to see it.
thanks
keren
Great show! Unfortunately (being Dutch) I have to depend on Youtube, but my favourite uploader did a great (and furiously fast) job and I have just been able to watch it.
Very well-done and hopefully seriously life-changing for Matt.
Looking forward to more!!
Derren, have you been communicating with my wife subliminally?
She didn’t even watch the programme, but this morning was trying to tell me that we need to take opportunities etc. Now she’s turned on the waterworks too, all over me saying no to paying £600 to take the kids to Euro Disney. She thinks she can manipulate as well as you do, though I call her version emotional blackmail!
Oh, and Matt was never really in any sort of danger with either the croc or the train.
The train would have stopped…… In fact, it would have been funny if Matt had turned to Derren and said, nah, I know you wouldn’t put my life at risk. I’ll just lay here for a laugh and let the train stop a couple of inches away.
Loved it!
“Alan Slater says:
…… I just can’t seem to release my own energy inside! ”
That’s right. It’s important that you can not seem. Choosing to not seem is an appropriate response to many circumstances. What other choices will you choose?
I never thought Matt or his family were actors but I did feel some parts of the filming seemed staged and not all Matt’s reactions to situations seemed realistic. Was there any re-shooting done after the fact just for greater clarity/prettier pictures?
With my scepticism on that aside I totally bought into the flight situation and was on the edge of my seat willing Matt to stand up. Was welling up like a good ‘un by the end.
Very interested to hear more from Derren and the crew as to how it was all carried out and also from Matt and his family to get their persepctive on it and also find out how Matt is doing now.
A fantastic piece of television, that was exciting, thought provoking, emotional. Whether you believe it happened or not, whether you picked out continuity errors or not, whether your doubtful or not, whether you think it was staged or not, I believe evryone who watched that programme had an experience of some kind, and an emotional response both positive and/or doubtful, but for me personally I loved every minute. For me it was a personal experience, I felt excited, tense, uplifted, inspired and truly an eye opener to how some pwople live their lives. At the end of the programme when mentioning that someone elses life will change, my friend said to me , “Is he making another series?” I just thought what can change in my life in thirty days, and how can I do it. Fantastic!
I love Derren Brown’s work but this didnt do it for me. Letting yourself into somebody elses house? Surely the right decision was to post the items through the letter box? I mean thats what I would have done, a mundane choice maybe but surely the most appropriate? And how could the lads Mother really feel her sons new found warmth towards her was genuine when she knew it was all part of the conditioning process in lead up to the main event? I think what would be really interesting is to catch up with Matt in 6 months time and see whether the expereince has genuinely changed him as a person. Regardless, of the many questions (and possible doubts) I’m still a huge fan and would love to see his live shows. I’m a skeptic at heart and would love to be challenged!
Miracle? ha, Derren Brown doesn’t believe in miracles, it’s all mathamatical probability etc.
I believe the wizard still has something up his sleeve………………….
@Yasmin “Magic, Misdirection, Psychology and Showmanship” is the answer to your question. You gotta dig deep to understand this and most of Derren’s work. He makes it happen but how is what you keep asking until you understand how without thinking “it was setup” or “the person was a stooge” as thinking any of those two things is wrong. Well you could say setup is partially correct if you think in terms of Derren made it all happen which means there was a setup behind it but not that kind of setup that says Derren just told him what to do.
You’ve also got to understand that Derren puts himself in front of millions/billions of people to show off “Magic, Suggestion, Misdirection, Psychology and Showmanship” so there’s no reason for him to make it fake when that’s what he sets out to do.
Awesome show, definitely the best one Derrens done so far.
The way Derren talks to the subconcious, or what I like to call the ‘Habitual’ mind, should inspire us all to change the way we talk to ourselves so that we can harness the power the mind holds – instead of just letting our egotistical, concious mind lead the way.
Did anyone spot the contenuity mistake though? Not sure whether it was intentional or not – you never know with Derren. But in the scene where Derren takes Matt to that field with the crocodile, there’s one shot where Derren’s talking and it’s lashing down with rain, he’s drench, but when it cuts to Matt there’s no rain and he’s bone dry. They then both walk away and are both dry! Hmmm?
A brilliant show.
So great to see a show full of positivity, and what we can all achieve with the right mind frame.
Again shows Darren not just as a great showman, but someone who can really inspire people.
Derren you’re awesome. I was wowed by the Enigma show. Loved lots of your other programmes. That thing with the zombie computer game – amazing! But , taking someone’s tie off without them noticing is still more impressive than your big projects in my humble opinion. And last night was boring. Please don’t turn into that guy who stood in a box and a plinth for a month or whatever. Its not that clever and it makes him look like a dick.
Thanks,
Amy x
Had watery eyes last night, I really liked Matt. Perhaps the next step would be to rid the beads from him as way of showing who is really in control. And did Derren have a very handy knife for the train trick just in case or were ten people filmed? Also wonder if the journey between one cockpit and the other from night to day was to enhance the dream like state from earlier on. Felt like I could achieve anything in 30 days but I will need to re-watch it every now and then. This is going to be another great DVD boxset. The new store should have a Derren doll in a jack-in-the box. (The Game is a great film, as is 30 Days and 30 Nights) And to think that someonne’s life is getting f****d with by Derren right now. Haha.
@B Markham : Have you seen the show where he knocks the guy out and takes him to another country?
To all the doubters: James Randi had a formula for how many people can safely keep a secret, it’s three, as long as two of them are dead.
If this wasn’t all it looked like then one of the many hundreds of people involved would be on the telly talking about it. There was a hangerfull of people, not to mention back-stage crew and camera and lighting operators, can you imagine a) how much it would cost to pay them off and b) how much a newpaper would pay to bring Derren down?
If you can’t keep the Stig quiet, I doubt you could can that lot.
I want to believe, I really do, but I just can’t – my life was happier and easier when I was less of a cynic, but now I am just sad and broken.
As usual I thoroughly enjoyed the show! Having seen Derren live and having the pleasure of meeting him briefly, I’m pretty sure this wasn’t all just a setup and faked. Biased maybe, being the fan I am but I know how disappointed I would be if I found out that it was all a total sham! I hope that Derren would not do that to his fan base. I think there is always going to be some artistic licence, after all he is an illusionist and showman so to be fair I think it’s to be expected. Certainly pushed some boundaries last night. I for one thought it was very entertaining. Keep it up Derren! I look forward to your next production. 10/10
So let’s get this straight. Derren encourages a bloke to break into a house and, later on, steal a van full of party supplies? And this is inspirational?
I lost interest about halfway through and only kept with it because I’ve enjoyed most of Derren’s previous televisual output and was hoping for some unique twist (which didn’t happen, depressingly enough).
I want to see the follow up in six months’ time. Just how has Matt changed his life?
Derren Brown is an absolute legend! A national treasure. An amazing man. A genius at the very least. I laughed, i cryed, i am inspired! Bravo, well done and kudos. Absolutely flabberghasted. I love everything he does, what a guy!
I may well be his biggest fan!?
WOW. Im still reeling.

That still leaves the other irregularities. A lot of them in the simulator. He was asked to press the auto throttle button on the side of the thrust levers. He was told it was marked “auto throttle” . (it’s marked A/T actually). This would actually disconnect the auto thrust. He was also told to disconnect the auto pilot. You could hear the klaxon go off when pressed it. These are the last things you’d want in such a situation. The aircraft would very quickly depart from it’s flight path if you did not know how to hand fly it yet somehow he found himself sliding down the approach.
Also when he was tied into a straight jacket on the (heritage line?!) railway. He seemed rather non plussed that he couldn’t get out of the thing. I’d be saying “stuff this mate!” and wriggle off the line!
