Hull, first night
Last night was especially fun. A day off (Wednesday had been a travelling day from Eastbourne to Hull) always brings a slight scattiness to the performance, which was all part of the fun created by a terrific audience. Eastbourne crowds are lovely but famously quiet, so it was encouraging to really feel the presence of the audience again. The participants too were lively and fun – all very much appreciated. I really loved the show.
It was a real pleasure to meet so many of you afterwards too: thank you those of you who bought prezzies for me and the crew. Particular mention to the delightful Elizabeth who had brought far too many generous gifts wrapped in impressively home-produced ‘Derren Brown’ wrapping paper. Thank you all. And I know Coops was very impressed with his Roast Beef Monster Munch T-shirt last night: an excellent coup, I thought, pun intended.
It is such a sweet thing to occasionally be handed a little prezzie from someone who’s enjoyed the show, but please don’t go over the top with them. Think we’re going to need a bigger truck…
Today I must persevere with TV writing accompanied by the brilliant Iain: some pressure is on to assemble ideas into a produceable format. Together we shall pace my small room and sweat blood until a new nugget of sparkling televisual gold is alchemically formed. Or not: more likely we’ll settle on an idea that seems ridiculous in the morning. I’m also doing a TV interview this afternoon for BBC ‘Look North’, during which I shall insist on looking North. They want to do it in a dressing room, but I don’t think they’ve seen how small the dressing rooms are. I don’t have long to think of a few amusing things to have in the background… false goatees lined up on polystyrene heads, that sort of thing.
Thanking you.
x
Love the piccy (but I love tropical waters (so why do I live in the centre of England?).
Which Look North BTW; there’s more than one. If it’s the *right* one I’ll keep an eye out.
Steve.
The clear river humber.
Don’t sit in your hotel room all day. You are MORE than welcome to come around for a drink. If you want my address then DM me and I shall give you it.
Ooops: unmatched quotes π
Braces, doh!
Glad you enjoyed, we all did too…
Yay! That Coops likes his Monster Munch Top, hope to see him in it tonight.
xx
Glad you had another fab night. Wouldn’t expect anything else. Looking forward to the TV thing.
Note Derren Brown fans, this blog post and the previous one about twitter. Rein it in guys. Sounds like some are getting carried away with the TV/show image. He’s not the messiah he’s a very naughty… yeah, you know the rest.
Keep it lighthearted folks.
I was at the first show in hull and as usual was amazing (3rd time seeing him) clever, inventive..all the usual..a true performer…derren, if your Reading this well done and pop in for a coffee and a hair cut!!…were just down the road from the theatre:)…(you too coops, you deserve a well done too …for…something!
Glad you had another great night, it sounds like it was fun. Your blog posts are making me even more excited for your show in Bradford in April!
Like Steve said – which version of Look North? It depends which part of ‘the North’ you’re in as to which version you get. As for amusing things to have in the background, seeing as you’re ‘oop north’ at the moment, what about a few whippets, wearing flat caps and false goatees whilst eating Monster Munch?!
Look North will no doubt be delightful as you may well meet Harry Gration, thought of by (not) many as quite the stud muffin, a Yorkshire-style George Clooney if you will. All the best Derren and team, Paul
Thank You my very special friend Derren. The night was so perfection to me. I thought the night couldn’t get any more perfect; it just has!
THANK YOU! Lots of Love to you forever. Yours, Elizabeth XXXXXXXXXX

now we all wanna go straight to hull…in handbaskets or otherwise…
Had a rough week this week, but brightened up when I remembered I’m going to see Enigma in just 11 days! π It’s nice to have something to look forward to.
‘They want to do it in a dressing room, but I donΓ’β¬β’t think theyΓ’β¬β’ve seen how small the dressing rooms are.’ Popular as ever, I see. Well, don’t worry, I’ve done it in a very small dressing room before, and it was…Oh, they’re INTERVIEWING you! π
Hull looks nice π x
manchester tonight, euston return <3
I was lucky enough to be on stage last night. ***SPOILER REMOVED***. Then blow me down two days later Derren picks me out at that happens!
I’m coming to see you in Hull tonight and I CANNOT WAIT. Really excited. My partner, on the other hand, is absolutely petrified. π
I’m glad you’re enjoying Hull so far and I hope you enjoy tonight at least as much as you enjoyed last night.
I like the way you politely refer to “feeling the presence of the audience” – every live show I’ve been to in Hull has been raucous and rowdy with plenty of foot-stomping – we do like to make a racket.
π
Saw last nights show and thought it was incredible.
I was speechless throughout and found his general delivery quite amazing.
A true performer. Cannot wait to see another show,
Also, I don’t think Derren thought Hull was as bad as expected!!
π
xx
Hii,
Saw you in Hull last night and you were AMAZING! I cannot wait for your next tour! π xx
Ahh so glad you enjoyed your 1st performance here in Hull I thought it was magnificent as always you were on top form & absolutely amazing & funny too nothing new there then!
also you looked totally sexy in the suit you wore in the 2nd half may I say π you should wear it more often π
It’s wonderful to have you in my hometown & not too far from me! hessle road to the new theatre is only 10 minutes in the car whereas seeing you in say Crawley as I did on your bday the other week was 7 & a half painful hours (worth it though π ) and at least you’re here for 3 nights wicked stuff, I wish it were longer!!:D
I can’t wait to see you again tonight & tomorrow & if you fancy going for a drink sometime just tell me when you see me lol π
take care see you tonight babe xxx Chantel
Hi Derren, just wanted to thank you for a much needed night of entertainment in Hull last night!! You certianly had myself and my brother talking for ages about how you do it!!?? Hope you enjoy the other 2 nights here in Hull and have a great tour elsewhere! See you again soon hopefully.. xx
Hello, the show last night was really really good. I hope the Hull crowed continue to be expressively loud and fun.
Thank you also for taking the time out to sign my book and poster at the end of the night, it made my week.
I’ve been looking through your portrait book and your picture of John Malkovich is amazing. I’m an aspiring illustrator and if I had one ounce of your talent i’d be super stoke’d.
I hope your shows and performances continue to be successful.
Leon
blimey…. Hull is a lot prettier than I imagined π
To anyone who went to the Hull show, may I ask a quick question:
What time does the show end? I’m having to get the last bus home at 10.25 and dont wanna miss any of the show. If it’s later than 10.15ish i’ll have to get someone to pick me up.
Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, look forward to tomorrow.

was at the show on thursday 1st time i had seen derren live but would love to go again, really did think ***SPOILER REMOVED***.

can wait to see another show well done
what time do the shows finish??
@Greig
I haven’t been to Hull show but saw same Enigma show last year in Nottingham. Show was about two hours total plus the interval. Hope that might help somewhat.
Thank you Derren and the team for such a mesmerising evening.
Since losing my precious Mum it has been the first time I’ve been able to leave the pain at home and have such an enjoyable evening – thank you so much. Derren you fascinate me and it was wonderful to meet you after the show thank you for taking the time.

Went to the show in Hull last night having already seen Derren live a couple of years ago. What an intelligent, well produced show which did not disappoint. Truly amazing and thought provoking with jaw dropping content which was wholly different from the previous live show! There were really intricate details which had clearly taken a lot of planning and thought…these were executed with true professionalism and showmanship. I was a fan before, however after last night,it’s safe to say I have evolved in to a hardcore follower! If I had have paid double the price for my tickets, I’d have still have felt it was value for money!
Brilliant show, I hope that when you retire or what not you explain everything.
But I personally just believe in determinism and that you’re very good at manipulating people.
Loved it in Hull on Friday night!! Before the show we were having dinner in a bar in Hull and my mum said there was a man that looked like you. I told her it most certainly wasn’t as he had a rather huge nose (and you don’t) but when we got to the theatre – at the opposite side of town – he was sitting in the theatre bar, weird. Then when we got to our seats he was on the same row, even weirder. So it obviously wan’t you because you were on stage – but how strange!
Great show in Hull tonight. was absolutely astonished at everything, completely speechless.
Shame I had to leave early though, darn public transport π
Hello Derren! Went to see your live show last night (Friday Night) at Hull New Theatre and I can’t stop thinking about the whole experience! It was mindblowing! I’ve never seen you live before and I for one will definitely be paying to see you again! It’s brilliant that you’ve come to Hull, so us fans of yours can come and see you, instead of having to travel miles and miles. And the thing that made it even better, is that I live in the town centre of Hull, so it only took minutes to get there and back! Gutted I’ve heard that you meet up with people afterwards though….If I’d have known that, I’d have stuck around afterwards, rather than walking home straight after! Hope to see you again soon in Hull and you and your crew are always welcome round here for a good ‘ole brew!!!!
Great show! ( I was at Eastbourne)
Does any1 know when/if he is doing any TV stuff anytime soon?
The Hull show was incredible; don’t want to say anything that would spoil it for those who haven’t seen, but the ***SPOILER REMOVED*** was possibly the most beautiful gesture that could be created with magic or otherwise.
Thanks for the signings, charming to meet you – I plan to take my copy of Ab Mag to the grave. Without a doubt the best magician working today. A tremendous evening of theatre, and the ending was stunningly good. Can’t fault it!
Just want to say again Derren, thanks for 3 fantastic evenings, myself, hubby, friends and mum all had a great time, and you was certainly on top form last night.
Take care.
xx
Hey Darren, really awesome show on Saturday in Hull. Thanks for taking the time to meet me and the family, and to sign the book and the photo and all the rest. The whole evening was an awesome birthday present for my dad, he was well chuffed to have had a photo taken with you.
Hopefully see you back on tour soon π
