End of Hull
(From the Agingbooth iPhone app. How I feel with 4 months left to go…)
We all had a terrific time in Hull – thank you any of you who came to see it and formed a part of a really sensational audience. We had a great crew in the theatre, which always helps, and the changes I’ve been making to one of the routines seemed to settle in okay. Participants were largely bright and bubbly on stage, which makes all the difference. I noticed on a couple of occasions around Hull that when I said ‘Hello’ to a passing child, they cheerily waved and greeted me back: something that would never occur in the places I hark from. That must be a good and happy sign. It’s lovely to see a cheery, friendly city reflected in the mood of an audience. Thank you all hugely.
One thing that Hull did bring was an inordinate amount of generously chosen gifts from people at the stage door. This was a very lovely gesture from all the people concerned: thank you ever so much. I must, however, ask that if you are one of those few who are thinking of bringing a present or bag of goodies to a future show, please save yourself the time and money. I feel bad taking them: the reality is that it’s just not possible to take most of the gifts around with us, and even bags of the most gorgeous-looking sweets and chocolate tend to remain woefully uneaten as touring does not allow for such a diet. I hope you don’t mind me saying that it means more than enough me that you would buy a ticket or even bother to stand around in the cold just say a nice hello after the show. (On this subject, I know Coops and Iain are starting to develop an abreaction to Roast Beef Monster Munch, but I say keep them coming – they made their bed and can now lie in it, crumbs and all).
After another 5 hour journey, during which some great ideas were hatched for a future TV special, we’re now in Southampton, or at least in an hotel nearby. I’m having a coffee in the ‘brasserie’ of this gorgeous old hotel. It’s rather idyllic, and has a tranquility that will not be found as readily around the back of the Mayflower Theatre over the next few days, with its train tracks and Toys ‘R’ Us. This may be the first year we do not hit the toyshop with the enthusiasm of its younger demographic: previous tours have seen us eager to stock up on soft toys to throw, and remote control helicopters with which to amuse ourselves in the auditorium. Preceding years also saw us staying in the unhappy DeVere hotel nearby, which we all remember uncharitably as the ‘Let’s Get Ou-de-vere’. That’s tricky to make work in print, but you can see what we did.
Staying in so many hotels one after another turns one into a terrible, intolerant twot. Anything other than the warmest reception at the front desk immediately makes every aspect of the place feel unwelcoming, and seeing another teak-veneer desk unit or chintzy eiderdown makes the heart sink unnecessarily. One becomes hyper-critical of slow or indifferent service and far more ready to complain about a poor steak, purely because, through no fault of the hotel’s, one has grown sick of it in previous establishments. Hateful. On top of that, though we really could not be any less rock ‘n’ roll as a touring group (our production manager once spilt ketchup on a white carpet: that’s as mad as it’s ever got), we are usually the noisiest table in the restaurant and often bundle into the most beautiful old converted stately homes in the scruffiest, most embarrassing attire, immediately sending out a message that we may not be quite right for the place. To then catch oneself calling front desk with the back-catalogue of frustration that comes from calling ten previous front desks with the same point of frustration, is to realise that one has fallen prey to the curse of the privileged: expecting other people to have nothing better to do that fit in with your own desires and make your life easy.
The wealthier you are (or the more you get used to staying in hotels on tour), the worse this becomes. As Alain de Botton has said, it’s always the arguments at the first-class check-in desk that are the nastiest. Foul.
Having said that, I’m honoured to be with such a delightful and pleasantly-mannered group. And the temptation to take these hotels for granted is a good reminder to me regarding what we unfairly expect from others.
Oh for fucksake my sugar lumps aren’t individually wrapped again.
Well you better perk up abit, after all Next Week you are in Leicester, and I am going <3 *I am Excited* 😀 😀
haha Tell the breeders to sort themselves out !
My god man you must look after yourself……..Sleep more!! you look exhausted…..But still very handsome of course! xx
Blimey Derren, much as I love you that photo made me jump when I first looked!! 😀 Thank god I have a Blackberry and don’t have access to that app!
I know you’re enjoying the tour but you sound incredibly stressed and tired reading between the lines of this blog post. I hope you’re ok and continuing to look after yourself.
Good luck with Southampton and, as always, take good care,
LC x
P.S That last line did make me laugh…… 😉
That picture o_o
We also had a terrific time at your show. First time I’d seen you live and was very impressed. Perfectly paced with lots of clever stuff and a great finale but I won’t thank you for leaving bloody XXXX playing over and over in my head all of the next day! Your show has also finally convinced my girlfriend that “psychics” are tricksters which is something I’ve been trying to convince her of for ages so I am forever in your debt for that. Good luck with the rest of the tour.
Haha 🙂 glad you had a good time. Can’t wait to see you in June! Everyone else has already been 🙁 But worth the wait methinks 😛 Don’t wear yourself out too much and you should definitely be careful with those sugar lumps – major choking hazard (it’s a long story :P) ! xx
well… at least you kept your hair 🙂 i thought ears got bigger as you get older, yours appear to have vanished! keep up with the good work, i thoroughly enjoy your show, and hope it doesnt age you quite this much. Enjoy being a hotel diva…it’ll make the misery of touring slightly more bareable, especially when you get a hotel like Fawlty Towers! just dont end up like Elton when you throw your next tantrum due to sugar lumps not being wrapped :o)!
Glad you enjoyed hull nd cheer up a bit mate your on tour nd your one of the most respected mentalists in the world and you are amazing at what you do, put a smile on your face and keep the stewie impressions coming. P.S. Thanks for a great show on Saturday derren hope you continue and do more tours in the future 🙂
Hahahehehoho…dead sexy, trés lovely and charmingly-fit piccie 😀
Nice, niiice read…ohh, the sweet paradox of it all xx
I’m guessing that the rather large box of Monster Munch I left at the stage door left Copps and iain feeling rather sick then.
The Stage Door Manager just looked at me rather strangely when I said that they had been ‘requested’ But I don’t know who he thought was stranger – Coops for requesting them or me for bringing a box of Monster Munch to a theatre!
The Hull show was fantastic – Thank you once again for involving me. My first (and only no doubt) time on the Front Row and it was amazing!!!
Lovely to see you again afterwards and thank you for signing my poster-can finally get it framed after all the trouble Phillis had to get them to us-the poor thing has been stuck in it’s tube since it arrived!
It will now take pride of place on the back of the toilet door 😉
Sarah x
STUNNING on both counts!! Your picture and post are both lovely and endearing, THANK YOU 🙂
Just wanted to let you know, that my boyfriend and I had a fabulous, yet rather baffling night (which I believe is the whole point!), at your last show in Hull…amazing. Our minds are still churning away, without success! Thanks again and take care of yourself
Micki x
Imagine a person’s face when still 400 months or so to go ….
Have fun in South Hampton. Maybe you can check the old hotel for some ghosts.
Ketchup?!!
Jesus Christ, ye are out of control!!!! 😮
Wow… there are no words to accurately describe my reaction to that photo; lots of giggles!! I came to the Thursday night show and it was amazing, thank you for including me in a couple of wee parts, it was an honour and a privilege to stand on a stage with you. 😀
And thank you for being so nice and kind to me at the stage door it means alot; I am seeing the show a few times and hope you dont mind me saying Hi afterward; you’ve helped me through so much and mean the world to me! 😛
Looking forward to coming to Leicester to see the show; I’m front row again so am so excited and my friend Rachel is coming to. I met through being a mutual fan of yours and I dont know where I’d be without her now so thank you for that.
Good Luck with your other shows, see you next week! Love Elly x
End of Hull? Sounds like some sort of bleak prophecy for the city, especially after the sacking of Hull City’s manager today!! Luckily you had a great time, glad you enjoyed the city – and I enjoyed the show!
Do come back again
p.s – maybe you should stay in a tent?
You know what this comment thread needs? I do. It needs ideas for hilarious things to do in a hotel. My first idea is to carefully put a layer of monster munch packets under the bedcovers before checking out.
Come on guys, hop to it. Extra points for incorporating random stagedoor gifts into your hilarious hotel-improving idea.
Man, you’re hard on yourself. Come on, hotels get dozens of arrogant bastards through the door every day…They can handle one more (Joke 😉 I’m sure you’re an absolute gent compared to some of the rude people I’ve met.)
Can’t wait for Leicester. Eight days…Eight days!!! 😀 But don’t burn yourself out. If you look like THAT now, imagine what you’ll look like…*shudder* Have to admire your guts for posting that pic, though. 🙂
You have more than your fair share of charm, Mr B. No wonder we all adore you. x
Derren you look so knackered but the way u say things bout hull we know u enjoyed it! Could tell by the way you kept thanking us when we met u outside and took time to sign ure tour programme for us! After seeing you at the show (and also been on stage with u) both me and my partner had to sit up till 1.30 am after seeing u on saturday trying to figure out wot u did and how u did it! Im still wondering why i chose wot i did and my partner is wondering wot u thought when u shook his hand and told him he had long palms and short fingers- he now wonders if hes abnormal! Cant wait to see and meet u again come back to Hull soon ure brilliant XX
You scared the SHIT out of me with that photo. Seriously. I nearly ran about like a panicked idiot without reading what was underneath.
But ya = being grateful for simple things is by no means an obligation, but can be a pretty damned amazing thing when you realise it’s your choice to do so.
Good call ScreamingGreenConure
You have two problems Derren, one is hotels and the other problem is too many gifts.
Use the gifts to charm the hotel staff!! Win, win situation!! And I thought you were clever ; )
It’s never dull in Hull, and it’s really nice to see some positive feedback on my hometown for once!
Thank you so much for such an amazing show, i loved every moment and when you are next on tour i will definitely see you again. i am still working out how you did some of the stuff you did and i look forward to reading the new book.
Cheers Derren! Last night in Hull….You made Lewis’ birthday (Was it 11 or 12? Who knows? Is it possible to keep anything from Mr B?). He will cherish the photo and the memory of his first “celebrity encounter” for a VERY long time. So will we. Mind-blowing ENIGMA….Much Respect!
hahaha to the sugar lumps – seeing you on wednesdays show at the Mayflower so if lucky we might pop round to the stage door and surprise you with some (i know you said noo presents but you’ll probably use them quickly – plus, they are a prop for a film we are doing so no biggie if they’re dumped :D)
if you see an amateur film group hanging around armed with a film camera, I promise we arent stalking you 😛 we’re doing a final project for uni but youre more than welcome to come say hi or take part if your feeling brave 🙂
cant wait to see your show!!! x
That picture is CLASSIC.
Excellent, are you wondering how to use the camera in the photo ? haha
Very good TV shows Ive saw in the past from Derren. 😀
Not much else to say
Thanks, Robert Brown 😉
Shut your eyes, rest your head.
Make your troubles small, so small.
Imagine they’re not there, at all.
Let yourself just be at ease,
enjoy a little peace breathe breathe sleep.
I like you.
can’t wait to see you tomorrow…… I’m scared already!!!!
Don’t tire yourself out before you get to Cardiff!! Can’t wait! first time seeing you live and im nervous and excited lol!
I’ve been slowly stocking up on roast beef monster munch so tell Iain & Coops to be men & follow it through!
Look forward to seeing you next Thursday!! (: (:
It was an absolutely amazing show on Saturday I came so close to getting up on stage, I even had hold of the frisbee. Cannot wait for you to come back (which I’m sure you will, right :p). Keep doing what you did on Saturday and baffling people throughout the country, you are a unique performer 😀
Tonight’s show at the Mayflower was utterly enthralling. Without wanting to appear a dribbling idiot, bowing at your side and kissing your feet, you instilled within the audience a sense of amazement at what human’s can do. You truly deserve everything that comes your way.
Oh Derren… you’ve been to ‘Hull and back’….. I’m guessing that’s the sort of picture that will generate a ‘lecture’ from Mum….good luck with that then lol
I hope you know that we all appreciate your hard work on this mammoth tour Derren and please take comfort in the fact that you make a lot of people very very happy indeed.
Suex
I thoroughly enjoyed the show on Thursday in Hull – it was my special birthday treat so thank you for making it such a spectacular night! Also, despite the fact that the simulacrum might be all there is, the values you (and Dawkins) present, particularly privileging reality over ‘truth’, and the often ignored importance of objective reality despite subjective experience, fill me with hope that superstition and religious fundamentalism might one day become a thing of the past. Thank you.
Oh how the other half live, and the other half complain.
It is good to know, how much pain you are in… staying at top notch hotels and fine dining every night.
It does pain me to know that fame and fortune is not all glamour especially if you don’t have individually hand wrapped sugar cubes, who knows who has been playing with them!
At least in your photo, you haven’t gone grey, unlike me @ your age… sigh
Still waiting for you to treat the crew and bring them over to Phuket, Thailand so I can see your show live. I am sure your underlings would enjoy it out here as a special treat.
Scott
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you… so so much for an amazing show in Hull on saturday night (13th)! 😀
Words cannot be found to describe how amazing it was and I am still utterly bewildered at everything you performed. My boyfriend Elliott is still going on about how foolish he was not grabbing the frisby which actually landed on his head, because he was too busy biting his nails! The silly Billy!
Enjoy the rest of the tour and shall definately be seeing you on your next touring adventure! (just make sure to use some anti-wrinkle cream before you embark on it! hehe ;-))
Thanks again you phenomenal human being 🙂
Laura (and Elliott!) 🙂
Ah, Derren, hun, you need to get some sleep it seems XD
*insert REALLY childish joke about sugarlumps being a euphemism* 😉
Thouroughly enjoyed the show on Saturday 13th March at Hull New Theatre.
Met you after the show….Got your autograph AND a photo…..well chuffed.
Thought I would be nervous meeting / talking to you but I was amazingly calm…You were so nice. Thank you.
🙂 🙂
Ah, how I wish I could’ve got tickets for enigma! Since I’m only just 14, I can’t afford to go any of your shows.. And I didn’t get a ticket for my birthday. On Monday I was mourning the loss of a great night out, and I hope you continue to make loads more shows until I’m old enough just to see you even once.. I won’t be a stalker who comes to see your shows every week, I think just to meet you once would be fine.. Been spending a heck of lot of money at davenports.. One heck of a shop! Continueing to watch all the shows: can’t wait for the next series!
Carry on you wonderful people.
Saw your show last night and was blown away, my mind is comletely boggled! You are a real genius! Hope you get some well earned rest soon x
I’ve got another one. Take all the extra donated chocolate, melt it, and smear it in a hotel room. The poorhotel people will think everyone’s gone rock and roll until they realise it’s free chocolate! I’m sure that will brighten their day.
FFS Derren, just dont put up with it – sugar lumps unwrapped, what century are we living in? Someone should lose their job because of that, or better still a limb.
Hahaha @SGC… now I’m imagining hotel staff frantically sucking at chocolate covered sheets and licking the walls!
Hello! Saw you at Mayflower last night, and thought you were absolutely brilliant! We found ourselves with genuine smiles of amazement on our faces that didn’t seem to disappear. I am also very jealous that you’re staying at the hotel i used to work in, and so i don’t get to meet you! Keep doing what you’re doing, you’re an absolute genious!!!
On behalf of all that live in Southampton I’d like to apologise for the HIDEOUS Toys-R-Us and the blue monstrosity that is the IKEA ‘cube’. Brilliant show, and fab to meet you afterwards – it’s so great that your success hasn’t gone to your head! Anyone who is still to see the show…you are in for a treat!!
