Last night – Oxford
Firstly and above all, apologies to those of you who wanted to come and say hello after the show. My few days off were beset by some non-porcine plague, in the way that bodies tend to sieze upon any quiet lull after an extended onslaught of sustained activity in order to punish the bearer severely for working so hard. I dragged myself to last night’s first night in Oxford, found I had to do an interview and photo-shoot for the Times, which I thought, like a ‘nana, was due to happen today, and was then amazed that the first half of the show went well and that I found a voice that seemed strong enough, given that I could barely speak a word during the day. In the second act it suffered, which is worrying: a few coughs and a dip in vocal energy may not matter much to that night’s audience, but without getting a chance to rest, the voice can just suddenly go, leaving us having to cancel a show or two as we did the other year.ΓΒ
So I had to skip signing, under sensible instruction from my company manager. Standing out in the cold talking and chatting is lethal for a damaged, suffering throat, so I hope any of you who were there can understand. A note was left on the door – if any of you have leftΓΒ anythingΓΒ for me to sign, I’ll see to them today, and you can come and grab them later on today – any time after 7.30 – ΓΒ from the stage door. I doubt very much that I’ll be signing tonight either, I’m sorry. If you have books or things – even programmes if you turn up early – that you can drop round to stage door before the show, I’ll sign them straight after and leave them there for you to collect. But I’ll be running straight off for Lemsip and beddy-byes right after the show, so forgive me if I don’t get to scribble my moniker on programmes and tickets bought too close to start time.ΓΒ
Please – anyone leaving anything – remember to put a note in with your full name on!ΓΒ
Now, to cheer us all up, here are some videos of some of the crew at the afore-slagged Novotel in Wolverhampton, when the hour was late and we were all rather tired. Firstly, dancing to ‘Woman in Love’ which playing quietly on the in-ceiling speaker system (so turn up your volumes please), is our own lovely Jennie:
and then, never to be outdone (although he clearly is), is our own ‘handsome’ Iain. One for the ladeez:
I note that Iain’s head looks too big for his body in this film. Rest assured this is his normal appearance, and not a perspectival glitch of the camera’s lens. Hope to be better for Grimsby x
He still has my roommate! Click my name to compare.
Get well soon, Derren. Thinking of you x
Hopefully, this is the first of many on-the-road clips of Jennie interpreting pop ballads through the medium of dance and Novotels. And can I suggest Total Eclipse Of The Heart as the next one?
love it… ‘Was that four beds or three…’
..err ‘seven..’
..’right…’
π
So sorry your feeling a bit grot but releaved that you are carrying on with tonights show as I have been counting down the days to it and would be just gutted to miss it.
I will have to go and get you some lemsip and leave it at the stage door. All the best for a sure to be amazing experience tonight.
Thanks for all the work you do entertaining us muggles and making our world seem a bit more interesting.
Sorry to hear you’re ill, milkshake always helps my throat try that!
Iains so cute!!
They should both dance on stage as a pre show to Enigma
loved the show derren, you were amazing, looked beautiful. Deeply gutted we missed you at the signing waited for an hour just in case, oh well. Hope you get better soon. Hope you got that envelope. x
Well……………me and my 4yr old have just laughed out loud for the duration of Jenny’s impressive “set”. Followed worryingly by said child’s request that I should do the same – ahem!!!! I have tried to explain, in earnest, that I would not look nearly so graceful as she, nor would I be able to get up from the floor afterwards!!! Alas my aged, post baby undercarriage isn’t what it once was……………..sorry for sharing π
Derren, if you read this can I recommend a course of Zinc or Echinacea tablets, available at a local Boots? They are scientifically proven to be quite efficacious if taken in short bursts. They typically lessen the duration of a virus by two thirds, and can certainly boost an ailing immune system. I was sceptical until sucking on some zinc lozenges in the States, desperately trying to hold off illness on a family holiday. They worked brilliantly (whether a placebo effect or no) my improvement was quite marked, and anything’s worth a try to get you thru the tour. It’s likely that your throat has been under strain, which allows any lurking bacteria/viruses to take hold and make you ill – typically flaring up when the adrenalin of the tour stops for a few days.
Good luck – and hope it improves. ZINC or ECHINACEA, boosts natural immunity.
I hope your voice gets better soon!
as a stage actress, I have that problem, too.
drink lots of water.
<3
Oooh so great to see you all having a good time. Really need to film more of your fun times, wonderful to watch “Candle in my wine” by Sir Elton.
Sorry to hear you have not been well on your well earned days off. That sucks, but hope you start to fill much better soon.
Get well soon.
Glenn
x
Get well soon good sir.
Give us a bell if you are no better by Monday. It will save me the drive up to Llandudno to see you.
*winkysmiliethingy*
I’m not getting all the fuss about Iain. His dancing is sweet yet bordering on terrifying. Jennie on the other hand sex on legs.
Terrible to be ill… but sore throat is a good excuse to go and eat loads of ice cream!
I doubt I’ll be the only one to be thinking these two things after watching those clips:
1) It’s strangely arousing watching a woman recreate a Nazi swastika through the medium of dance.
2) Definite David Brent overtones to Iain’s performance.
Thanks to all the team though, last night’s show was fantastic. π
lol…Some delicate dancing moves there Jennie…and so serious…
Very well done, though i wonder how Lain manages to go all electric-boogie on a slowdance song…ΓΒ΄tres aparteΓΒ΄ π
(i feel a sudden urge to practice a birthdaycake breakout striptease…dunno why but might come in handy, teehee)
tata for the lovely entertaining clips
xx
Even with a cold coming on… still the best show I’ve been to ever! Was brilliant to be involved in a spectacular finalie… it was suprise after suprise! Absolute genius! π
Oh, and DeΓΒ rren,…is that you or Coopie humming in the background? Lolvely π
Anyways, do get some bloody rest and sleep on time like…well, that is if your not doing that fcourse…
tata
xx
Hope your better soon Derren.
*lol* Love the dance clips, specially Iains – defo agree with Emma Rose, I think they should do a warm-up routine on stage. :o)
xx
Ha ha ha!
I liked how Jennie (in the words of Phil Jupitus) ‘twizzled herself into a swastika!’
Get will soon Dez!
Hope you get well soon derren….I bet your show was still great…I saw enigma in bournemouth and was hooked all the way through and I bought your book there and havent put it down. It is a fantastic show and hope you get to rest soon even though I cant wait till next year to see if you can do it again ;o)
Good luck for the rest of your shows x
Where can I get one of those Enigma t shirts? π
kk You need to drink lots of water (preferably not cold) and rest – water will help throat + dilute the virus. Also, turn the temperature up, sweat tends to flush the virus out your body (seriously). So try them tomorrow in particular.
For your throat –
Breathe in/out your nose as much as possible.
Always remember to project voice from your lungs to save strain on your throat.
Don’t eat anything too solid.
That will probably be obvious to you but sometimes it is easy to forget π Get some rest!!
ROFL!!! That was soo funny!
Especially Derren’s voice in the background humming along to the tune..
You guys have so much fun I’m suprised you get any work done π
Jen
P.S Derren hope you feel better soon xxx
ha ha class, looks like lots of fun was had
Get well soon, Derren! π
Gutted there wasn’t a video of you dancing, bet we all would have enjoyed it. =P
Hopefully, I’ll get to see one of your performances live one day too. π
Best wishes
Sorry to hear you’re feeling so rough Derren!
…
Candle in the wine is a classic!
x
No offence to Derrens lovely crew π But next time can we see a video of the main man himself?
Get well soon!
aww poor Derren (((hugs))) I hope you feel better soon my sweetie <3
Hope you’ll be better for this weekend in Grimsby it’ll be lovely to see you again π
But I understand if you’re too ill & have to cancel or not do signings o.k, the main thing is that you get better honey o.k <3
Hopefully see you this weekend
take care hon
chantelle π
Awww Sorry to hear your ill Derren π that sucks! I hope you don’t have to cancel any shows it would be criminal to deprive people of your excellence! I hope you recover soon! by the way loving the dancing videos hehehehe soooooooo funny!!! xxxx
Loved the show last night, and rest up. Soup & orange juice usually help a sore throat (obviously not at the same time!) The show never cease to amaze me, and I’ve been to all four tours now π
Jennie IS lovely – More of her please!!
The last set of effects were absolute magic. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant climax.
Thanks very much for your hard work and dedication. And get well soon.
the bit with the dancing was especially good!
Get well soon Derren!
I thought you did amazingly last night, what a fantastic show.
Hands down the most gasping I’ve ever done in the space of 3 hours!
That ending has had me grinning all day π
When we’ve all completed the “Be excellent to each other” mission, we need another competition for one of those Enigma t-shirts.
It’s nice to know that the soulless environs of a late-night Novotel can be put to good comedic use – fantastic!
Sorry you’re not feeling well – hot Ribena with honey, plus beddy-byes with a well-worn DVD box set of inane drivel usually works for me.
Get well soon xx
After spending an excruciating day revising for uni exams, these videos hugely cheered me up π ‘Is that a candle in my wine?’ was a personal highlight.
Hope you feel better soon Derren and i look forward to many more videos!
xxxxx
At least, according to the bbc, men now have an excuse for being “wimpy” about colds, the weak and feeble beings that they are… :p
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8047321.stm
And since everyone else is telling you how to cure you cold (which, on a side note, is a) not possible, it’s a virus, and b) i’m fairly sure that most adults on the planet know how to deal with a cold (well, i suppose, except perhaps men… ;p)) i thought i would join in :
Dancing cures colds – esp if you are being filmed at the time, and even moreso if you put it online for the enjoyment of others… You should therefore dance, and film it for both our and your own benefit… π
Well, Iain seemed a bit too eager to start dancing like that on command. Whatever floats his boat I guess. π
Hope you fee better soon Derren cariad. Oh and I want one of those Enigma t shirts! π
excellent show last night, I was suffering as well!! Hope your cold gets better soon look forward to seeing you next time
Thanks so much for an amazing show despite difficult circumstances. I was so glad to get to come on stage with you, it made a great evening even better. Is there anyway I could send you my program to get it signed as it would be a great reminder of the evening… Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Feel better soon DB!! I hope you are alright for Grimsby too!! It’ll be my first DB show & we’ve had the tickets nearly 6 months!! Sooo excited, i might just explode!! XXX
GREAT VIDEOS! Never before seen a wiggle like that on the second one – enter him in Britains Got Talent π
The show in Wolverhampton was brilliant – made all the better by me catching a frisbee and getting to meet you (even if the gits at the Grand had locked a door making it difficult to get to the stage!! Me, make you wait, never!)
Hope you feel better soon – too many shows with no breaks in between – i was knackered from my brain hurting when i left so god only knows how you must feel!!
Seriously thinking of getting a contract out on my mate at work – he has tickets for Northampton . . . . . . . .
X
so sorry to hear you have come down with it like the rest of us. Do try to add whiskey to your warm water, honey and lemon, works really well.
I was so worried about coughing when I see you in Plymouth due to rudeness, seems it might now be acceptable X
Sorry you’re feeling grotty – if it’s any consolation the show last night didn’t suffer at all, it’s truly inspired! Thank you for soldiering on π
I find that the only really reliable cure for a sore throat is a decent dram of good scotch and an early night – worth a try at any rate π
Get well soon!
How gorgoeus is jennie and a great dancer lol π
Hope you’re feeling better soon but with dancers like that in your crew you should be feeling better soon.
Jennie 10 10 10 10 10
Lain 10 10 7 10 10
Get someone to boost the volume a bit from your microphone on stage ..
Have your signing thing inside instead of outside, backstage.
Don’t speak during the day, this will get you all into exercising the art of telepathy a bit more, or rehearsing deaf language a bit. Can be fun. Body signs as Jenny showed us all in the clip can be used as well.
Or, yes, get to bed early. The darn thing is though, that you then start to feel it at times even more, your throat.
Liquourice or any candy will do, as well as a few drinks in a warm tub. Make sure not to drown, better to tie yourself up to the ceiling, so that you can’t go down in the tub too much. Make also sure to release the rope enough. Never know what your groggy state will cause to your brain that is, your normal sense of judgement regarding things like this.
I myself just keep annoying me about my throat if I ever have trouble with it. The older I get the more it annoys. Smoking really is not possible sometimes either anymore … how low life can get, when the body no longer obeys us.
Just keep it nice on the inside, no matter how bad it gets. Then it wont get bad, you see.
Now then, back to bed with you, you little poor thing.
No need to wonder where your sore throat is coming from.
