Liverpool and Blackpool
Two big one-nighters: the Liverpool Empire and the Blackpool Opera House. Phwor. Both were lovely gigs, with great, great audiences. Thank you if you came along. I managed to break my mic in the second half in Liverpool, and had to call to the in-house crew at Blackpool to keep the conversation level down backstage, but despite these minor mishaps they were both good shows.
One fun aspect of chatting to the in-house crews is hearing the tales of ‘stars’ who have appeared there. Crews have a huge amount of power, and if they take exception to an arrogant star they can amuse themselves at the performers’ expense. I have heard tales of crew urinating in the rain machine for a production of Singin’ In The Rain. Of a spotlight operator purposefully missing a famous comedian with the light for the whole show because of a racist comment that was flung in his direction. Of a very well-known comedian defecating into the puppet of his warm-up ventriloquist, whom he loathed, who then had to do the whole act with excrement dripping down his arm. Of course I love asking about the big-name ‘psychics’ who tour, to see if there’s any gossip. In Liverpool, one very famous medium appeared and was spotted by a crew member sneaking in three old ladies through a side entrance (one seemed to be his mum)… old ladies who then played along during the show. Another, watched every night by the same crew, was seen to use the same ‘stock readings’ in every show… precisely the same stories, the same names, the same ‘details’ lazily thrown out to an audience who would make it fit their own situations every time. Doris Stokes would apparently have people come to her hotel for private readings during the day, and then invite them along to the show in the evening, where she would come out with the same information she had garnered from them during the afternoon. I thought that was particularly inspired.
Yesterday in busy, bank-holiday Blackpool I visited Carnesky’s Ghost Train, just next to the Pleasure Beach. Ooh, it’s rather good. I had been to her earlier version in London and been a little disappointed, but this is definitely worth a visit. It’s a scary, intelligent, layered, disconcerting experience. The girl in front of me was proper freaking. Everyone involved does a great job – thank you all those who were tweeting afterwards following my visit. Took me ages to find a working cash-machine, but it was well worth it.
Now some time off. Hope to start a new portrait of Rufus Wainwright. Searching for decent hi-res source material. Ta-ta.
I bet the girl in front was proper freaked at the fact she was in a ghost train with the scariest mind reader in the world! 😉
Fantastic show in Blackpool last night, thanks!
Thanks for another great show in Blackpool last night! Agree about the audience (some real characters on stage), but thought you would either love us or hate us. To me they seemed distracted, perhaps attributed to the Bank Holiday and natural distractions that come with a place like Blackpool. Shame I couldn’t meet you again at stage door, had to dash for last train home. Was going to ask you what you planned to do with your 6 days off, so guess this answers my question! Was also going to ask when Thatcher portrait was going online, and if you had considered doing Salman Rushdie?
Didn’t expect you to be on twitter so late after the show, thanks for that as well.
P.S. Meant to say that Kamiya, the Japanese man who married my grandfather’s cousin, brought the ghost train to Pleasure Beach.

P.P.S. Love this image of Rufus: http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/3684166.jpg
The show must go on, eh? No way I would stay onstage with poo on my arm.
“Sorry, ladies and gentlemen, Sooty could not wait… he’s done his business on my arm! Filthy dog…”
You are very kind to keep your psychic friend anonymous. On reflection, after Simon Singh’s experiences with our libel laws, it is quite sensible to keep shtum. I know Mr Singh won, but it was a close call. Plus your backstage buddies would get called up to give evidence – no fun.
Not suprised by the so called Psychics using the same material every night! There’s a well known psychic in the little town i live in and i work for the local newpaper. So one day when she came in to pay for her advert my work collegue who was pregnant asked the psychic what the sex of the baby was. She said she couldn’t possibly say because she’d need to book an hours session for her to get an accurate result!!!!!! Come on it’s only 50/50 anyway!!!!!!!!!! What a load of crap!!!
Glad you enjoyed the ghost train. Most of the people were probably more scared after seeing you on it!! lol x

Great show(I saw you months ago) but as an aspiring psychological mentalist who writes my own material I can’t help leaving one of your shows slightly miffed about the originality and spectacular delivery of each Piece thanks for much enjoyment,
Jack
Derren, saw your show last night in Blackpool, me and 3 friends travelled from the Isle of Man, and it was well worth it! I was one of the lucky ones who got to go on stage and ***SPOILER REMOVED*** – was ace!
Loved every minute of it!
Hope to see another show soon
Thanks again
Rebecca
Thankyou so much for a truly wonderful, mesmerizing and entertaining night on Sunday in Liverpool. I received tickets to the show for my birthday in December (after leaving numerous hints with my husband) and we were amazed! You built up such a good rapport with your audience and we left the show on a high…bewildered by what we had seen. We can’t wait to watch it again when it comes on DVD and are already looking for tickets to another show! Thankyou once again for a fantastic night out!
Thank you for a truly amazing night in Liverpool on Sunday!
Truly mesmerising – you made it look all so effortless & it was by far ‘The Best’ thing I have ever seen!!!
A brilliant show that had us laughing, guessing & on the edge of our seat the whole way through!
I still can’t stop thinking about a certain trick or trying to guess how you did it, but it was mind-blowingly brilliant!
And as for the ending – AMAZING!!!
*** A definate must see for everyone!! ***
I’m so looking forward to your next work….
Derren Brown = a true genius & great showman!
ALL OUR MINDS ARE BELONG TO DERREN

Hi Derren,
After hearing about what you do from my son, had to come and see you once. I was amazed! Your show was fantastic! and thank you for the photos and autographs. You made my sons night by the autographs and photos and talking to him after the show. I will definitely be recommending your show to everybody I know.
Thanks again for an awesome night!
Just wanted to say what a wonderful time I had in Liverpool on Sunday. It gives me a headache when I try to think how you did some of the tricks. Thank you for leaving me dazed and confused. Love, Marie x
hi Derren.i saw your show with my partner Simon on Monday. i just wanted to say what a fantastic time i had. you always leave me with a feeling of how was that done? we didn’t stop talking about it all the way back to the big blue hotel. which brings me to the question did you stay at the big blue hotel? just coming out of the hotel i passed a gentleman with an overcoat and flap cap and he looked very much like yourself. if you could please tell me this was or wasn’t you i would be greatly thankful put my mind at rest.
thanks once again for a fantastic show. i look forward to your next show/tv appearence.
just to let everyone know Derrens show this monday 10th May 10pm channel 4
Hi!
Amazing show on Monday!! (Blackpool) Great to ***SPOILER REMOVED***
love the fact the tricks were flawless yet the technical equipment can mess up.
The show was really good not only was the magic good he shows that he is a great show man, made me laugh anyway.
I was at the Empire in Liverpool & I loved the show….. My only downside is I was SO far back the theatre provide some binoculars to ‘rent’ in order to see properly! Needless to say they are proudly displayed in my car as a souvenir.
For an actual fright in Backpool I suggest the “Pasaje del terror!”
Anywho – thanks for the memories & ***SPOILER REMOVED***.
x
i used to work at liverpool empire theatre and can verify that the medium did actully choose stooges for the evenings performance from local bars in the afternoon and pay them after the show (what a fraudster) !!
Show at Liverpool Empire Theatre was truly the best thing I have ever seen, especially after finding myself on stage and not remembering much of it! Truly powerful, mind-bending stuff. Oh, and a kiss on the cheek from Derren was just the cherry!! 🙂
Show at Liverpoool Empire was amazing!! I’m still in shock one week on! I was called on stage now getting referred as ***SPOILER REMOVED***!! Truely amazing show! Superb !!
The Fylde Mystics really enjoyed your show last Monday, we are proud to have you as a member of our society.
I’ve found you site very interesting. Keep up the good work. A YANK!!!
I was wondering if the Carnesky’s Ghost Train was any good. I loved your Blackpool show, I booked as your TV shows are great but seeing you live on stage was just soo much better.
Thanks.
PS love the black and white photos above.
