Opening Night
In one of the many odd traditions of theatre, ‘Opening Night’ happened on the third night of the run. And it was an early start, to give the journalists time to write up their glowing doxologies after the event. It felt like a rather good night: full of pace, with some excellent volunteers on stage and a lively, enthusiastic audience. Plenty of members of the press found themselves catching the frisbees and heading up on stage too, which was fun. Sadly a few have printed spoilers in their reviews, despite my request not to, so be careful reading them if you’re coming to see the show and wish to enjoy it fully.
Guests at the party included Charlie Brooker and Reece Shearsmith, two recent faces on this blog. The ‘best dinner-party guest in history or the scariest man in Britain’ quote that my press persons used for some time and which sits on the front cover of ‘Tricks of the Mind’ was written by Charlie years ago, and I was finally able to thank him for it. And I was able to apologise for the fact that they’d replaced the third ‘balls-out con artist’ option with a discreet ‘…’, at least until I read as much in one of Charlie’s books and immediately had the missing section reinstated. So, job done. This was the first time I’d met him properly and he was delightful. Reece and I spoke about Psychoville, which I am desperate to see. We were discussing the option of me going over to his place and watching all seven episodes with him, back-to-back. Which we abandoned as only one of us would be able to see the screen. Doh! We may do that soon. It sounds like a wonderful afternoon to me.
I’m hugely under-slept at the moment, having missed much of the last couple of nights. I’m sat in town, trying to work on the book, but finding it hard to keep my eyes open. I shall sleep at the Adelphi this afternoon. I’ve just come from doing a brief TV interview with David Frost (I haven’t done any TV like that for years). There’s a man who loves people and famously carries about him a conspicuous, easy charm. I nearly fell asleep on his lap. And I’m waiting to meet a very lovely journalist from the New Yorker, Adam Green, who comes over to see the shows when they open. He’ll probably have to wake me.
I thought I should mention that the other night I was having dinner, upstairs from where I am now, in the same restaurant as both Noel Fielding AND Russ Abbot. How about that. What a thought. No, they weren’t sat together, but there you go. Both in the same restaurant. Imagine.
Enough celebrity gossip. If I find any nice pictures from the party I’ll put them up. Now I’m just going to close my eyes for a few moments. Ssshhhh….
x
You know, I’ve never thought of the words Noel Fielding and Russ Abbot together. Now you’ve doe it, it sounds like it really isn’t possible for them both to exist in the same dimension. Kind of like Paul Daniels and John F Kennedy. Or Orson Welles and Jimmy Krankie. Very odd. maybe it’s just me though.
oh Charlie… giggle… blush.. giggle.
I like Charlie Brooker, but he frightens me on the grounds that he shouts a lot.
There’s a bunch of pics here:

π
Can Charlie Brooker be worked into the next series of “Trick of the Mind” or whatever the next telly project is. This simply has to happen.
The thought of a Brown/ Brooker alliance would be my idea of TV gold. Almost as momentus as a Noel Feilding/ Russ Abbott colaboration π
Sweet dreams Derren x
I’ve already posted overexcitedly that I WAS THERE but, hey I was there. Never been to an opening before and I didn’t actually know it was one. Most visible sleb apart from the non-sitting-down Charlie Brooker was Paul Daniels, who seemed to be blummingwell everywhere. The Lovely Debbie was not with him and he seemed like a lost dapper elf. Pig trough volunteer was lovely and very jolly wasn’t she. (This is a non-spoiler. No pig troughs were used in the show.)
Flapjack: who would win, though? They’re both terrifying. Which one would give in and cower first?
My father and I had a fantastic night at the opening; thank you very much π
To Michelle:
Thanks very much for the link to the photos, dear, they’re fabulous! I love LoG, but the pic of Mr Brown with his mum is the sweetest thing I’ve seen this year! Damn, she’s got a good figure… And you can see where he got those fine cheekbones.
Thanks again for sharing x
…shhhh… sleep well π
night night. Sleep well derren. X x
SCG – You have a point… it does sound like a game of “Top Trumps”. Brooker wins hands down on cutting sarcasm and aggression, but Derren wins on psychology, misdirection and showmanship. I think in terms of wit and verbal dexterity they’re equally matched.
Just as well they got on OK really, or it would probably end in carnage.
BTW has anyone ever attempted a celebrity Top Trumps before? [I should probably stop now, I’m getting way too geeky here!]
I was there on wednesday … throughly enjoyable evening and still cannot believe that I ended up on stage too! Derren …. you have very soft hands π
Michelle: Thanks for posting the photos – a friend of mine is in one of them! It’s good to see her still being a celeb in London :o) Haven’t been to the West End in years as I live in the US now, so it is nice to see some pics from a theatre opening.
Hey Derren went to the show on Thursday it was great! I donΓ’β¬β’t suppose ‘Matti’ (nice looking female) at the Adelphi gave you (or any of your lovely assistants) my book to sign…..? π I hope you had a good well deserved rest.
Read a couple of the reviews today. The guy from the Times obviously loved it and entered into the spirit of the entertainment he had been sent to watch, but Charles Spencer in the Telegraph obviously has some big problem with Derren. He gave it 4 stars but then went on to write a review that I can only describe as nasty. He threw a couple of big spoilers in too. My advice, don’t let him in next time and the same goes for any other reviewers who also wrote spoilers.
@Hayley – i thought that was his sister!
i also think Brooker would make a great guest on a DB special, or vice-versa.
i wish i were in TV development. increasingly i would like to see a show with folks like Derren, Charlie, Ben Goldacre, and so forth, who take on woo topics in an informative and entertaining manner. kind of a counter to the Oprahs et al in their own medium, the one that’s mostly likely to reach those not yet in the “choir”, so to speak. i think we probably need it over here in the US even more than the UK.
anyway i’d like that.
also wish i didn’t have to watch all my UK tv shows on the internet. whattaya gonna do.
OOhhh Lovely lovely piccies…just all lovely…
IΓΒ΄m not surprised that you need some good sleep now though
tata and sweet dreamssshh…
Oh my actual God. My two favourite men ever, Derren and Reece, in a darkened room together for a whole afternoon?! Excuse me whilst I spontaneously combust with excitement at the thought!!!
π
@michelle , thanks for the photos – some of them are very sweet . Hope you had a good sleep Derren π x
Has anyone ever nicked a frisbee? Like, grabbed it and not given it back?
Just saying, it would be a terrible thing to do and if anyone did it I would not give them respect and kudos and it would be unsellable on Ebay.
So yeah, if any of you goes to one of these and catches a frisbee, don’t “accidentally” lose it under your chair or anything. Definitely do not do that.
8-0…Charlie—|—Jesus ?! …lol, Love his shirt π
Peachykeen – This has already happened. Can’t remember which episode of ‘Trick of the Mind’ it was, but Derren challenged the League of Gentlemen (including Reece Shearsmith) to a cake version of Russian Roulette by offering 4 mini chocolate covered rolls, one of which contained a razorblade (or did I imagine it?).
I think he only revealed that the remaining one contained the razorblade after they’d already chosen and eaten all the others. I think if it had been Derren guesting on “The League of Gentlemen” or “Psychoville” the outcome would’ve been a lot more bloody!
@Michelle, fab link. Lovely picture of Derren with his Mum and Dad. Don’t know who Lorry O’Toole is but she looks Faaabulous darling! (Related to Peter?). Glitzy indeed. π
Glad the opening night went well, although we wasps didnt expect anything less. The people who wrote reviews containing spoilers are obviously too stupid or lazy to write around the actual mention of show content. Can’t see why they would do it otherwise. Unless they long to be as clever, witty and entertaining as the lovely Mr Brown and knowing that it will never be, makes them act like complete arses. Spoilers indeed. What’s the point? We all managed to keep our traps shut, why can’t they. Grrr.
Hope you had a nice nap Derren π
x
Just read Telegraph review. Derren Brown is creepy? Really? How very 2005 of you Charlie Spencer..
“It is the curse of magicians (with the exception of Tommy Cooper, who was sui generis) to be unloved because they make their audience feel stupid. Here, however, Brown displays an unexpected dimness of his own in expecting his audience to be as bright as he is.” (Charles Spencer, Telegraph, June09)
(Managing to insult both Derren Brown and his audience in one fell swoop!)
Have to disagree. One of the delights of Derren’s style is that he does credit his audience with some intelligence instead of pandering to the need to dumb things down.
He explains things to a certain extent but doesn’t spell it all out because then we are given enough info to try and work it out for ourselves or we can marvel at another persons cleverness and enjoy that amazed feeling we used to get as children when we saw a magician pull a rabbit out of a hat.
I suspect that it is Charlie Spencer himself who felt stupid rather than the majority of Derren’s audience who I believe, from reading the comments on here tend to be an intelligent bunch (if slightly mad π )
Rant over. Hmph!
x
i had an absolutely wonderful time, though being in the super-cheap, break-your-neck seats in the upper circle (having to turn sideways to see derren at all!) perhaps took something out of it for me. hope to go again and get involved. brilliant. hooray!
ps – if you are in need of a good book to read, DB, i’m at the penguin books offices over the road and have no shortage to occupy your mind for the daytime hours!
Come back to oxford again! Missed the whole Enigma tour thingy, couldn’t get tickets in the end. night :)..
Nooooooo CNG Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah, it must be our superb underneath hidden connection …. I failed to sleep the last 3 nights (got about 2-3 hours a night max, whereas I need at least 8.
But I did not fall asleep on someone’s lap. Neither nearly. No time to do that. In stead of that, a repair man pushed the waterpressure of the watersystem of my heating system up and I discovered that this will cost me twich the amount for water annual than I have to pay now. AND it will take quite a lot longer before it gives warm water. So that will cost me more as well, and it will make me spill even more water. Ofcourse, I came to this thought after he left. So now I have to call them Monday to tell them to put it back to its previous state . This was the extra service of this repairman, all for free .. to give superb comfort. I prefer to save money, besides, the slightly to low pressure did not bother me. Yes, he came up with this all by himself, not even checking the customer. Oh well .. wont bother you with this.
Opening night .. the 3rd night? Weird .. makes sense (brittish).
I am not familiar with brittish celebrities, I hardly ever recognize any of the names mentioned on this blog. So, I have no idea .. who were in restaurant X (very important to keep it a secret apparently). I would not really notice them anyhow. Not even sure if I’d recognize you rightaway I have to say. Depends, if I’m bored or not, what company I’m in at etc etc .. (You know .. a bit bored .. starting to check the restaurant .. oh, ook, isn’t that brown overthere, doesn’t like it here neither apparently … and look at her overthere …. she clearly must be in love with that guy .. but why? Ooops .. Brown just hit the waiter .. bad mood I guess …
Derren
Really appreciate you finding the time to send a message when
you are so busy and tired. Thank you.
Look after yourself man, forget the book while you are so tired,
sorry to be so bossy !
flapjack: Seriously? Didnt see that episode, but one of the contestants on last season’s The Next Uri Geller (my favorite, actually) did almost the same thing, except instead of a razor it was maggots. Didn’t like his performance of that bit, it was entirely out of place in his routine and character, but it is sort of interesting to know that Derren did it before. Gotta find that fragment sometime.
I’m kind of torn between finding the spoilerish interviews (curious!) and avoiding them so that next week’s show will be a surprise to me. Any advice from people who’ve already seen it? Would the show be less good if I know what’s going to happen?
Berber Anna, I would avoid reading anything about it if you can.
This is coming from someone who has had to delete hundreds of spoiler comments on here since the tour started (and who hasn’t seen the show yet). π
Spoilers suck.
I laugh at the reviewers who say Derren is some sort of attention seeker (he’s not – he shakes your hand, he asks you what your name is, he connects, he delivers, he makes you remember his performance for life – I’ve been to the show) yet go out of their way to give spoilers, criticise just for the sake of ‘look at me and how “witty” I am at bashing everyone and everything in the world!’ and tell downright lies. I cannot take them seriously at all. They are jokes.
Here’s the bottom line with these morons:
If you don’t like an illusion show, don’t GO to an illusion show.
Only a complete sadist would go to something they don’t like when KNOWING they don’t like it just to express how much they don’t like it in a newspaper towards any gullible readers to get attention.
Hello! I was there on opening night in the front row and it was truly fabulous π Loved every minute and the ending was mind blowing! My friend and I were sat there agape. I went round to stage door afterwards but of course DB was busy with friends and family… Abeo, is there any way I could get my book signed? I was gutted!
Aw poor you Abeo, I hope it hasn’t spoiled it for you too much having had to delete loads of spoilers, I’m sure it’ll still be an amazing night…
Yes, BA, I’m going to avoid reading any reviews too, don’t want to know anything about it before the night. Although I’ve found in the past that the odd spoiler hasn’t ruined it for me; just peeked my curiosity…
Glad the opening night went well and it was generally well received. Noel Fielding AND Russ Abott in the same place at the same time? Ha ha. I’m surprised the restaurant didn’t spontaneoulsy combust with with all the hairspray in the atmosphere…that would be ‘happy atmosphere’ of course. *cough* On the comedy circle they couldn’t be more diametrically oposed in style. Well done for recognising R A, think I’d probably pass right by him.
A friend said the show made her laugh more than when we went to see Russell Brand. That’s high praise indeed! Wish I didn’t have so long to wait…
Sleep well everyone. Hope you manage to catch up with some rest Derren….
I’ve just got back from the show and it was absolutely fantastic! though slightly over shadowed by the cameo appearances from the stunningly beautiful Jennie – Sorry Derren Thanks to all for a truly great night
I’m so excited, coming to see the show a week on saturday!!
Stupid journalists!! They ruin the show for everybody!!
I wouldn’t talk about the show in a room where there may be people who haven’t seen it!!
(except to say that everyone should see it!)
Thanx DVB! XX
@flapjack…. you’re right! Now I think about it I remember. Was he also involved in The Gathering? I think I have repressed the memories as it’s too exciting.
Just come back from the show – loved it. You thoroughly deserved your standing ovation – the ending was superb.
Look forward to the new telly series π
I had an absolutely brilliant time at the opening night show, went on stage for one of the pieces – astonishing, couldn’t sleep trying to figure out what happened! Just booked more tickets to go again!
Got approached by loads of journalists afterwards trying to find out how it was done and if i was a stooge – as if?! Maniacs.
Thought it was absolutely superb, have recommended it to everyone i have spoken to since.
Thankyou so much DB!! xxx
