The Great Art Robbery

STAGE & SCREEN

Channel 4, December 2013

THE GREAT
ART ROBBERY

Master illusionist and showman Derren Brown plans to pull off the perfect crime. He’s made a bet with renowned art collector Ivan Massow that he can steal a painting from right under his nose. In true Derren style, he tells Ivan which painting he plans to target – a work by Turner-nominated brothers Jake and Dinos Chapman, as well as telling him when the theft will happen, and gives him a photograph of the person who is going to take it.

In order to pull off the theft, Derren enlists a crew, but he’s not using career criminals or skilled cat burglars – he’s using members of society that tend to slip by unnoticed: pensioners.

“I’m always at a loss to describe Derren Brown. Is he a magician, a con artist, a psychological illusionist, the spawn of Satan? He so freaks me out that that I’m afraid that by watching him I’ll be left with the urge to tap-dance naked down the high street every time someone utters the word ‘aardvark’.”

– Ian Johns, The Times

Infamous

2013–2014, UK Tour

INFAMOUS

For Derren Brown: INFAMOUS, a more ‘personal’ show, Derren re-united with his close collaborator and friend actor, writer Andy Nyman.

The show won Derren and team another Olivier award nomination. It featured a hypnotised member of the audience asleep in a glass sarcophagus for the duration of the interval, and tour-de-force finale of the kind of mental wizardry Derren developed at school, where he was unaffectionately known as ‘Dickbrain’.

★★★★★
“It is on the stage that he really comes alive – relishing the chance to stun and baffle his audience.”

Daily Mail

★★★★★
“There’s a depth of intelligence…a relish for the poetical and the philosophical too – that easily stands comparison with the finest drama.”

Daily Telegraph

★★★★★
“The fact that he has the stamina, let alone the sheer talent, to make us believe that he is doing what he is doing night after night is a feat in itself.”

FEAR & FAITH

In the first episode of this two-part special, Derren examines the ‘placebo effect’ by introducing a group of willing test subjects to the effects of a newly-developed drug – Rumyodin – which can inhibit fear.

In the second episode, Derren looks at the psychological roots of religious belief. In one experiment, we see an atheist given moving conversion experience through purely secular techniques.

APOCALYPSE

Apocalypse

STAGE & SCREEN

Channel 4, October–November 2012

APOCALYPSE

Steven, an unsuspecting member of the public, is given a second chance at life when Derren has him believe that a meteor has hit the earth. Part One sees Steven’s home wired with hidden cameras, his news sources manipulated to warn of the impending collision, and his family members all playing their part. Part Two follows his journey through a post-Apocalyptic, zombie-infested world, in search of his family with the help of a small group of friends (played by meticulously rehearsed actors who are able to guide his journey).

Highly moving and utterly outrageous, Derren Brown: Apocalypse remains the most ambitious hidden-camera project ever filmed.

“Though a fan of his creepy oeuvre I am now pretty convinced that Brown is an emissary of the dark side. The man could probably swing an election if he put his mind to it. Come to think of it maybe he already has…”
– Kathryn Flett, Observer
