Tour so far
The last two weeks have been a delightful hiatus in Birmingham, a city I really like. It was re-vamped a while back with such pride, and the area around Brindley Place in particular boasts enough great restaurants to keep a foodie like me very happy for a fortnight. Bank Restaurant is top of the list, being where I spent pretty much every afternoon, and Loves nearby was a really excellent new find.
It’s also a great city for the tour, as the staff of the New Alexandra theatre are beyond compare. We are lucky enough to have met some really excellent, super-friendly crews during our tours: the Alex bunch are a particular huge joy. Kim, the general manager, had made me an astonishing photo print as a welcome gift, along with some excellent whisky. More of that please. Thank you everyone there, it’s always such a treat.
The famous Brum friendliness was evident at stage door: numbers are so large outside now that it’s always a bit of a rush, but everyone was super-lovely and didn’t seem to mind. We added a tiny new bit to the show that seems to be working well, on top of the improvements we made back in Oxford. The process of continually trying to improve and tweak is one of the real joys of touring, and of course helps keep the show feeling fresh for me.
I donned the classic hat and shades celebrity disguise for a day-off trip to Alton Towers one afternoon with the gang, and we soared and dipped and vomited on Nemesis and Oblivion and Air and all the rest of them. I rather like 13, for what it’s worth. I like a bit of old-fashioned big dipperiness. A bit of plummeting punctuation to my rides. Nowadays it’s all on the one note, all the same velocity and turny-twisty.
Last year I remember riding everything, including the hilarious and terrifying Oblivion, as many times as I could, like a six-year old high on Fanta, and found later that I had strained my throat with all the tension and nearly lost my voice. So this time I was more careful. (Also, I remember, last year we had Jennie with us, who added stage blood to our faces and blackened up our teeth with make-up so we could look horribly damaged in those mid-ride photographs they sell at the exits. I recommend this game unreservedly.)
The past weeks also brought a night where a chap fainted twice on stage (during, for those in the know, THAT bit). Twice! I’m sure it all looked like part of the show, but it provided the sort of extra excitement that I live for.
Tonight is our first of three nights in Northampton. I believe it’s also home to a Torchwood convention this weekend. I wonder what sort of cross-over demographic will emerge. I’ll watch out for John Barrowman costumes or sudden bursts of ‘I Am What I Am’ in the stalls. (Do I have that right? I honestly don’t have a TV so I don’t really know what I’m talking about).
Righty-ho, carry on about your business. Pleased that the Rapture hasn’t affected show attendance, though I did find myself wondering at a couple of second-half empty seats in the front stalls last night.
The picture shows the rubbish collected from just ONE QUARTER of the stalls the other night. We’re such a filthy bunch.
Sounds amazing! ^_^
May I be the first to warmly welcome you to Northampton! I recommend Nandos as a good eat! Will be coming to see you on Monday where I will be sat in the stalls ferverently revising from revision cards for my uni exam the next morning. Haven’t got time to see a mind-fiddler when I have an exam the next day! =P
Looking forward to seeing you in Northampton this week & having a good night out. ๐
Fainting isn’t half that bad actually… I have done it twice ( not on purpose) it is just clashing your head of the concreate floor that hurts! lol It is just like a very severe head rush.
Sounds exciting! Hopefully I can get tickets soon =D
Can’t wait 2 1/2 hours to go to see the show. Going to be amazing. Thanks to my lively wife for the tickets.
I think if THAT bit is making you faint Derren you’d better stop doing it. You seemed to manage it ok the night we saw you………
Well should read lovely but lively is quite fitting too!
One day I actually have to meet you. 10 long years as a fan and the closest I’ve got is a reply to my blog comment. Glad everything is goong well for you and best wishes for rest of the tour!
Seriously? Modern-day theatre-goers can manage enough intelligence to book tickets but not to throw their rubbish in a bin. Shameful.
Do you believe in magic?
Derren thank you sooo much for the most fantastic show I have ever seen!! We waited 6 months to see the Birmingham show on the 18th and it was well worth the trip and the wait to be sat in such a mesmerising and rather scary show ๐ I couldn’t stop thinking about the things I’d seen in it, the finale will stay with me for a long long time! ๐ such a gentleman aswell backstage you even thanked me for waiting in the cold for your signature, your fans love you Derren as you are one of the few gentlemen left combined with an incredible giftXxxx
Omg have they never heard of a bin?! I’m gonna be voluteering at a theatre in a couple of months…guess that’s what I’ll be doing D: And is that Coops sat on a chair there? :p xxx
Been lovely having you.
BSA RULES!
Kim is my good friend’s sister so I got an unexpected invite to your show last Sunday. Enjoyed it immensely, I think I was open mouthed throughout most of the show. It really made my week so thank you for your awesome-ness =)
Oh and I completely agree with you about 13 – brilliant ride.
Hi Derren (& Team),
Many thanks for coming to Birmingham. Surely the nearest to us Mid-Wales folk that you’ll reach…!
A great show once again, leaving us baffled and bamboozled as always. Shall I assume DVD release end of 2012? Looking forward to seeing how the show develops and changes through the months of tweaking.
Many thanks again for coming out after the show on Saturday 14th to sign our goodies, books, and odds & sods. A true delight to be remembered by you, although Charlie this time a little dis-heartened that she didn’t get the chance to *squeeze* you like last time…! (Her fault, not yours!!)
Have fun in Northampton!!
Matt & Charlie

Oh I wish I could do without a TV like you, I tend to get addicted to it.
Do keep adding to the show cos I’ve just bought tickets for the Manchester show and looking forward to the new streamlined version as I also saw it in Liverpool X
Wouldn’t have put you down as a roller coaster person (not sure why!). Been to Alton Towers twice but only managed to get on Air the second time. Very weird – it’s relaxing yet scary at the same time ๐
Glad your having a lovely tour so far! Kinda upset that I went to one of the first shows (Grimsby) so can’t see the changes you’ve made, but will definitely get tickets if you come to Hull in 2012 (fingers crossed!). My mum mentioned to her sister how good your show was, now her and my cousins are going to one of your London shows (I am beyond jealous) haha.
Would just like to add what a fantastic show this was. Probably the best I’ve seen Derren do. I didn’t realise he was so funny as well. As promised I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t seen it but they are in for a real treat! Can’t wait for the next one!
Sounds like you’re having a blast on tour and it’s going really well. Long may it continue…. ๐
Take care

Not long now till Derren Brown comes down to Plymouth! Will be my first time seeing a live show of yours, I also hope to get your autograph at the end as well ๐ . I know you like parrots so there’s a place down Cornwall called Paradise Park, it’s a really nice place and it’s good to see what they do to help with the World Parrot Trust. You should pay a visit some day, I know you’ll love it ๐
When will we see a Derren Brown app? ๐ xxx
Awesome show last night, really enjoyed the additions since I saw the Liverpool show. Dissapointed you had to dash off after the show last night but it was funny watching your slick operation of running out the front doors of the Alexandra and jumping into a taxi! Hopefully catch you Tuesday after the show in Northampton ๐
Oh, I love it when you post stuff ๐ Alton Towers is amazing. Hopefully going there in June and I’m really excited about riding Thirteen! Oblivion is the best and Rita is wicked…..I could hardly breathe on that one. Huge queue though. We’ve been so many times. I have a feeling this show is going to be the best and can’t wait ’til its on TV (I know………ages away! Lol. xxx
People fainting on stage? Now I can’t wait until next Sunday to see the show! I’m glad that you’re all having a great time so far, difficult get-ins aside ๐
Hi Derren
Great post, thanks for the update, I am looking forward to seeing your show.
BTW, AQfter your twitter posting, I did dream about you, but not until the night after! Is that significant? There was a specific item in the dream, bet you can’t tell me what it was!?
Keep up the good work
Stu
Aw hi Derren ๐ I’m glad the tour is going amazingly for you! Sorry to hear of that huge scratch and your swollen eye ๐ also heard you had some trouble with your poor throat a while ago ๐ I’m not surprised- what with the amount of effort you put in! Glad you had fun at Alton Towers! I would love to go there someday soon. I am very excited as I am coming to see you three times! 4th June at the BIC, 18th June at the Shaftesbury and March 2012 at the mayflower in my hometown! So I’m traveling a lot for you Derren!- feel special ๐ haha can’t wait to see this amazing show and hopefully meet you in person! Your an inspiration to me, amazing skills and besides the work- you are a truly delightful person ๐ thank you for everything Derren! Love Jazz x
Amazing show, as always! I was lucky enough to get up on stage this time for the end trick, yay! Next time you are in Brum I definitely recommend Purnell’s x
Oh My Gosh Derren, I saw you on 20th May in Brum and it was the most amazing and tense three hours I have ever spent in a theatre! I bought my boyfriend tickets for his birthday and both he and I were amazed (and freaked out by THAT PROP you used!! Haha!).
I actually thought you were mad right at the end of the show and haven’t stopped playing it all through in my mind since I left the theatre!
I wish you all the best in Northampton (where I actually live (I reside in Brum as a student)) and hope that your tour is a massive success!!
p.s. I recommend teh restaurant Ask at the top of the road where the Derngate entrance is, gorgeous Italian food!! ๐
xx
Enjoy Northampton, and I will see you in Plymouth on Friday night!
It was really good to see you (went on the 17th May) and it was the first time to see you live.Glad you enjoyed Birmingham and of course the restaurants.
Don’t know whether it was you but saw someone going through the Mailbox a bit before the show with your well known cap on.As I was sampling the tapas in Bar Estilo and I am thankful of you signing my ticket, as now not many people pop out after a show to see their fans. I was impressed too of how well mannered everyone was waiting for you afterwards. And how polite you were even though you haven’t much time and were probably tired.
Any way all the best for the rest of the tour!
And Birmingham loves having you! Everytime you come here, the shows get better, I look forward to you coming back in the future.
You were amazing in birmingham, really loved it , just wish i was picked out of the crowd, but not for the second half cause i would of fainted to ! I cant wait till it comes out on dvd ! hope you enjoy the rest of your tour you clever clever man x x
Will you be doing any signings in Northampton? Seeing you in memory of my brother, he adored you and wanted to see you but sadly he passed before he had the chance. I can’t wait me and my partner will be seeing you Tuesday night, we’ll be high up in the stalls and far away but i’m sure the experience will be unforgettable ๐
Great stuff : ) I love the pic, sure fans will take the hint. You could always have a devil recycling bin at the door. I worked in Alton Towers (on the children’s farm) the year Oblivion opened. Don’t look down haha. I’m now eating a Cornetto Enigma ice cream : ) Wishing more fun ahead for the team.
Sounds like you’re having an amazing time Derren.
Hope the fun continues, and we miss you back in London – we can’t wait to see you back here!
Lots of love, take care. Xx
Hi Derren,
Just wanted to thank you for a brilliant show on Tuesday 17th May. It was my Mother’s Birthday (Debra) and we were sat in the front row of the stalls.
I think she was surprised to find herself on stage, taking a bow with you and being serenaded! It really made her day ๐
It is the second show we’ve been to (the first was Enigma) and you never fail to amaze us, not just with the show itself, but how lovely and down to earth you are in real life!
Glad you have enjoyed your time in Brum and looking forward to the next show already! Hope the rest of the tour goes well Xx
Half time @derngate. Poor woman…. How embarrassing!! รฎยลก
Derren and your wonderful team
What can I say …………………… what a great show my husband brought the tickets as my birthday present and it was the best present in ages. I was unsure at first as when I found out where our seats were I didn’t take it to well. We sat in the gods and I dont deal with heights very well but you soon took my mind off that. From start to finish I was in another world and loved every minute of it.
So thank you all for my birthday present and keep doing what you do best.
( A very grateful and can I go again now) Charmayne and Husband
Lovely reading about the tour, even though I wouldn’t see Svengali live. I will buy the dvd in the future at some point when it finally appears all translated etc. I take it Alton Towers is a fun fair? Nice that you had fun there.
Only just watched Enigma and really keep wondering how it is possible to control people by hypnosis in that a way. I guess I’ll never really find out how. Or be that observant. Anyway, thank you for being you and I don’t know, giving something to me that I don’t think anyone else could give. Thanks for making me see things better! ๐
You walked past me at Alton towers, am gutted cause I convinced myself it wasn’t you, coming to see you next April in Torquay, absolutely can not wait!
LOVED the show once again,, thanks for coming back to Northampton, always a treat. xx
I have seen you live many times now, and I think this show is back to what you do at your brilliant best!! Loved it and can’t wait for the next time. ๐
WELL DONE !!!
Oops those empty seats were next to me but as least I got to stretch my legs out lol!!! Brilliant show by the way – was a bit scared by THAT bit but loved it too at the same time, totally mind boggleing :o)
It sounds like you’re having a wonderful time and sounds like a brilliant show if you’re managing to get people to faint on stage (the last time I experienced fainting was when my wife passed out on the way in to the Penn and Teller show in London last year after she’d started feeling ill on the way down, so we missed the performance!) I hope you managed to catch the poor guy before he fell, it’s quite scary when someone becomes a dead weight.
Really wish I could be at one of the shows, hope the tour progresses well and I’m really looking forward to the DVD coming out.
Amazing show tonight thank you so very much. A fantastic weekend away and topped off with your show. Back to the real world tomorrow. And we came 125 miles to see you. Well worth it. funniest thing though on the way back to the hotel the taxi driver took us to the wrong hotel then we spent 15 mins showing him how to use his sat nav until I found it on my phone and directed him. We did laugh! Eventually!
Banging show, loved it. Enjoyed it so much, even better that I got to be a part of the show. A true dream come true, a life goal if you will. Struggled to speak afterwards when i got my ticket n programme signed, even managed to stick around long enough after the crowd and get a picture. Took days to sink-in. Derren you the man. Plan to get tickets mid-next year (hopefully on filming night see if I can get back up on stage) and check out the improvements, if u could improve.
Loved the show on Saturday night, it was an absolute blast! It made my birthday complete!
Also, thank you for taking the time to meet so many of us at the stage door. Having so many adoring fans must be very tiring.
Lastly, thank you for playing that instrumental role in bringing Hannah and I together. I knew that if she was glued to the sofa she couldn’t get away and I’d have a better chance of stealing a kiss.
Best wishes
Callum
