Two Days In
First two preview days in Chatham have passed without death or injury. The first night, astonishingly, provoked a standing ovation, despite the fact that I felt the first half went pretty terribly. We’d all been concerned about whether the second half would play well, and confident about the first: the surprising outcome for us was that it was the first that needed the most attention. Things that you imagine will be inherently fun just fall a bit flat, or take too long; you realise that segments are too wordy or bits need to be re-arranged to create the strongest impact. So we cut out some pieces, tightened others, and made a whole load of changes. The second night was better, though my balding headlet got confused over some of the changes and left a few bits shoddier than I would have liked. Such is the nature of previews, and the audience get to see a work in progress, which has its own pleasures.Â
I don’t want to mention any specifics from the show, so please, if you’ve seen it, please please don’t talk publically about the content either. I’m very careful in pre-tour interviews, despite journalists’ wearying insistence, not to give anything away that happens in the show (partly because we make so many changes late, but mainly because I want to preserve the surprises). So I hope you’ll join in with that as we go along and more of you see it. There are a few more previews left and then Wednesday the official first night kicks off in Hastings. That’s Hastings, which I royally frigged off last year by having to cancel when I couldn’t speak. At least this year they’ll get a reasonably fresh voice.Â

Glad it all went well:) – Shane, Ireland

hopefully the show will b perfect when you get to Newcastle (on the Wednesday!)
cannot wait!
Glad to hear the tour is going well, cant wait to check you out in northern ireland, would love to get you a pint take care for now x
The show must be pretty good to recieve a standing ovation on the first night me thinks your being over critical Mr Brown but with your changes (in the words of D Ream ) things can only get better ,cant wait till the 7th of May in Blackpool 🙂
Thnx for the review…loveleyy to read how it´s going!
I don´t want to read the contents either, by someone else talking about it…that would def. ruin the surprise for us all…graww
I am though, all for a dressingroom or backstage piccie for on this blog…every niight, …yes, every night…so here´s the start of the `Pro-daily-derren-backstage-pics-Group´…
Raise your hands, if you join, 😉

Glad to see everything is coming together so well. A standing ovation on the first preview night is massively impressive and hopefully it’s just the start of a very successful tour. We’re coming to see the show tonight and I’m so looking forward to it. Hope everyone gets to see it at some point and good luck with the rest of the tour Derren.
ReliegiousMarie – Here here Pro-daily-derren-backstage-pics-Group sounds good to me 😉
Glad it’s all holding up, standing ovation is pretty good 😉 … but I must say, I really just commented to say OMG cute little magician doll! Want!!
Don’t worry if you have problems, we all know you can just mess with the audience members’ heads so they think it all went perfectly anyway. Apparently that might not be necessary though, since a “terrible” first half results in a standing ovation. That’s a big bowl of awesome and a heaping side of win.

If you didn’t think it went so well and it still got a standing ovation, then I really can’t wait to see it in full swing.
Break a leg….shame i cant get to see it, would love to!
They say men go bald because there is nothing inside for the hair to hold on to! ;o)
DB, I am now in total control of YOUR mind so that you WILL choose my son, Robert (age 14), as a volunteer in tonight’s show.
I went to see the show at Chatham last night and it was amazing! I work at the theatre so I’m hoping I get to see some of Mondays and Tuesdays shows too. Good luck with the rest of the tour!
Zomg, sounds like it is going good 😮
Dun worry if you think you messed up the first half. It sounds great so far 🙂
Can’t wait to see you in Glasgow!
Excellent. Hope you’ve mastered the show by the time you get to Bournemouth since it’s a bit of trek for me if you botch it up 😉 lol
wow that sounds cool that you got a standing ovation despite a few bit’s not going quite so well
congratulations I hope the rest of the tour goes well
take care
see you soon 😀
Standing ovation? Are you sure you didn’t make them believe their seats were red hot? No, I’m sure in was great. You’re just being over critical. Can’t wait to judge for myself in London.
Cute little magician. Don’t tell me, you turn the handle and a rabbit pops up.
Both my hands are in the air for the `Pro-daily-derren-backstage-pics-Group´ too.
I saw the show at chatham, and it was everything I expected, thanks for a great show, and dont worry about the first half I think you made up for it in the end and deserved the standing ovation. good luck with the rest of the tour
How scary it must be putting a whole show like this together, and hoping it works as well as all previous offerings. Bless DB, how he feels some of it went disasterously, yet forumites thus far report a brilliant show – the man can always be trusted to deliver. Good luck everyone involved, can’t wait to see it x
I came to see your second show on Saturday – we all had a fantastic time! (Possibly the best bit being my brother’s reaction – he has no idea how any of the show was done, whereas I, at least, have some good theories!!) :o)
See you again on Tuesday! (Wonder if you will have changed anything by then!)

I came to the show last night and thought it was absolutely fantastic! 🙂 My sister even went on stage, which made us believe it all even more!
I have spent all day trying to work out how it was done but still haven’t got a clue!
Thanks for such a brilliant show 🙂
x
Can’t believe we’re gonna see you for real. Even if u jst stood still 4 2 hours it will be perfect. Each day is going painfully slow, can’t wait. Please don’t get a sore throat this time round …. everyone is looking forward to their special evenings. It’s gonna be spectaculour. X x x x x x x love ya derren, see u soon. X
OMG!!!!!! went to see you last night and it was UTTERLY amazing!!!!!! cant say too much but its a MUST SEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! loved every minute of it an am going to see it all over again. polished an brand spanking perfect in June….CANT WAIT!!!! ta for a great night 🙂 ta ta for now 🙂

It amazes me that all audiences sort of respond the same way to one show. Well, the main part of the audience that is. Perhas there were a few who really enjoyed the first part but you did not hear them as they stay silent, they laugh on the inside. I’m probably one of those .. ehehe … I sometimes start to laugh when no-one apparently sees something funny and vice versa.
Oh well, I’ll stick to digging and birds for the time being. Wont confuse you with my poker face in the audience.
Wishing you all the best, good luck (I dont believe in theatre’s voodoo stuff .. actually what if you do break a leg after someone having said .. break a leg …)
ohhh…. why oh why did I buy tickets for June? The end of June at that! It’s my birthday tomorrow and I have to wait till the end of June. What was I thinking? The suspense is killing me!
Hi Derren,
We were at the opening night in Chatham and loved every minute of it. Obviously don’t want to go into detail but the first part of the second half was awesome! Don’t worry about the fluffs, it’s fun to see how different routines play out on different nights with different people, which is why we have tickets for a further 10 shows :o) Best of luck with the rest of the tour!
Roll on Oxford :O)

NO SPOILERS (CHATHAM)!
———————
A remarkable and truly wonderful stage performance on Saturday in Chatham. Not only did you receive a standing ovation from the crowd but a personal serenade of Busted!
During the interval my friends and I, retreated backstage to one of the offices (as one of my friends has working access to the Theatre). Without mentioning any specifics of the show. We were so engrossed in conversation about the content of the first half of the show, we nearly missed the start of the second half. So… despite your concerns – Derren, we thoroughly enjoyed it!
In all earnest, my only criticism would be Derren’s questionable flowery shirt after the show, but the poor chap looked so tired perhaps the matching cravat, fashionable accessories and pink socks, didn’t enter into his mind at the time.
Thank you, Derren for signing my programme, I’m only kidding about the shirt, a confident man could only pull that one off! Oh… and I need to send my apologies to poor Coops. I past him in the corridor. I was so surprised to meet him, I just shook his hand and said hello. On reflection… I realized I hadn’t introduced myself and left poor Coops thinking “who was this strange mad women shaking my hand!” I’m sorry, I’m the strange mad women on your blog instead! I only wished I could of met Phillis as well, but perhaps he’s the lucky one!
Once again I commend an outstanding performance and for those of you going to see the tour I predict, a wonderful evening of entertainment.
P.S. I thought I saw Andy Nyman, I wasn’t sure… but could you just confirm my suspicions. Only I wanted to check I wasn’t going completely mad or perhaps his doubleganger was just malingering around backstage… well I don’t know anyone!
Oh and finally… Thank you for a wonderful Birthday treat to all involved!
We saw ‘Enigma’ in Chatham last night. It was a truly amazing show. I don’t know how Derren keeps coming up with new ways to make people say “how the hell did he do that†but he does year after year. It’s quite incredible to be honest.
Revealing anything at all about the show would be a criminal offence because you have to experience it first hand to appreciate the sheer cleverness of it all.
Derren really does have a breathtaking ability to engage his audience. His skill and mystifying presence is extremely alluring. For two and a half hours he makes the unbelievable seem ‘believable’ leaving you with a feeling of much needed escapism from the ‘real world’. Bless you for that Mr B.
Hubby and I are still talking about the show today and I guess we will be for quite some time to come. Tomorrow, its back to work and back to reality so, thank you Derren and team Derren for taking us on a wonderful journey into a world of mysterious phenomena ……….. pure genius.
Reading everyone’s ‘reviews’ here really makes me look forward to seeing the show in London this summer! 🙂 It sounds every bit as good as the last one, and the last one was quite lovely.
I feel sort of responsible for my friends’ having a good time (I’m organizing a London trip for a group of friends, and we’re all going to see Enigma), so I’m quite happy to hear it’s that good. Not that I expected it to be anything but, of course… 😉
*sigh*….
We’ll keep waiting for you down here in Oz Derren…
(insert sniffling noises)
@Michael McG: Oh…sorry, I feel bad now, but I’m afraid no spoilers. You might have to wait until a DVD release next year, maybe. But if it helps ‘An Eveing of Wonder’ will be out on DVD in May this year.
In case you didn’t know Derren Brown: Mind Reader ‘An Eveing of Wonder’ was last years show!
I’m going to the Bournemouth show this Saturday (25th)….can’t wait!
This’ll be my first ever and I’m so excited.
My first Derren experience was a front row one Kelly! I was thrilled and scared in equal measures. I’ll also be at Bournemouth on Friday and Saturday!
Went to Chatham last night (20th) was really good, didn’t notice any mistakes. Apart from the annoying smart alec at the front who kept giving you stupidly smart words. But you still managed to get him! Love you and your randomness lol xxx
What a fabulous night out!
My daughter and I were thrilled to see you at last.
Of course, you wouldn’t have chosen me ,a local Hypnotherapist to join you on the stage….in or out of trance! 😉
I know how some effects are done, but Im not telling!
Good luck with the tour and please return to Chatham soon.
Hello D!
Sounds as though it was resounding success to me… but come on!!! you know how great you are really don’t ya 😛
But then there’s nothing wrong with a little self-deprication sometime’s I spose, not if you know you’re great 😉
Hastings is actually the official launch??
Shame, looks like I’ll be missing it again this year 🙁 doubt there’s any ‘free tickets’ going atm LOL 😛
Did see you in Easbourne about two years ago… absolutely awesome 😉
But last year I would have been unable to attend anyway … So I didn’t manage to get frigged off with you 😉
Good Luck for the rest of the tour to you D (and all concerned)
(Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about the universe!?)
Hi Derren,
Saw your show on the 20th at Chatham – agree with the poster above about the smart a*** trying to out fox you………numpty, but the “egg” was certainly on his face !!!.
Truly amazing show. Been a fan for many years but this was the first time we have managed to get to see you live but certainly wont the be the last.
Thanks for a truely amazing and outstanding evening.
Jay
Saw your show in Bournemouth last night – was very very good indeed. The ending completely threw me and capped of an excellent night.
I’m going to see Derren at the Lowry on Thursday and after having read all these reviews I am sooo excited – even more than I already was!! I went to see him last year in Blackpool and was absolutely amazed at everything that he did! Was still talking about it 9 months later. Can’t wait to see what he has lined up for this year…
Good luck with the rest of the tour!
xxx
saw Enigma at The Lowry, fantastic.
i saw the first show in chatham and even though there were a couple of things that didnt work it was still an amazing show.thanks for an entertaining night
i saw the first show in chatham and even though a couple of things didnt go as planned it was an amazing night.you deserved the standing ovation.
Do you actually read these things? Weakest live show yet but still good. Demographic appears to have shifted to the teen/student market , or you have uncharacteristically poor taste when it comes to music. Saw Enigma in Blackpool, had huge row in service station re the show. How do you do the photos trick in The System?
I travelled for 2 hours to see Enigma last week in Blackpool and the trip was worth every mile! The second half and the ending was fantastic, and the standing ovation for a brilliant show was much deserved. However the only negative I have about the show was that the first half was a little bit like a comedy act at times (more than previous live shows I have seen) and I felt this took away some of the tension in the audience that adds somthing special to Derrens performace.
Did anybody else notice this?
Saw you in Sheffield last night Mr B! You were awesome.. :0)
I’m seeing derren in a weeks time, very excited, and was wondering how long the show is including the interval??
Thanks
will be seeing the show on either 10th or 17th (depending on when i can get tickets) for my mums birthday. from what ive heard its a great show..can’t wait
Saw you live for the first time at the Adelphi last night. Marvellous stuff sir – my other half is going to be trying to work it all out for weeks to come! Thanks!
