TV tonight
On BBC4 tonight at 9 there is a programme about self-portraits. Featured in it is my dear friend Patrick Hughes, who creates astounding reverse-perspective paintings/sculptures that appear to move with you as you walk around the room.
I have a few of his pieces at home and it is delightful watching visitors unable to fathom what they are experiencing. He has recently cast my little head for a ‘reverspective’ portrait, and has also done one of himself, which will appear in the BBC4 show. Mine, I hear, is ready too, and I’m picking it up from him tomorrow. We’ve in fact done a portrait swap: I am painting him in return for his portrait of me.
I’ll feature both on this blog – including the pictures of me getting my head cast – when I have everything ready to show you. He is the most richly wonderful man, and a unique artist, so do catch the show tonight if you can to get a heads-up (pun intended) on this guy.
Will be there buddy! thanks for the heads up! love anything like that!
By the way i loved the Hero feature you made a few weeks ago! will you be making a new one? as it well and truly inspired me Derren.
great work buddy

Fantastic!! That’s my tele-visual entertainment sorted for this evening. π
I find this sort of art quite fascinating to look at, really bewitching on the eye. Therefore, I can’t wait to see your own portrait done like this, Derren. Really looking forward to it….
I’ll shall definitely try and catch the programme tonight at 9pm if I can. π

Sounds grand, shall be watching (:
Don’t know whether to look some his stuff online now or keep it a surprise. I do think I’ve seen some of it before after searching round on the information about the feeling eyes in a picture or painting are following you around the room but quite some time ago. Probably before 9pm tonight curiosity will get the better of me and I’ll be looking him up. Definitely interested on the heads up on this guy. Oh and can we trade portraits too? I can draw stick men. Fair swap I think π
That is sooo cool π
We have one of he’s works at my head office (Library Labyrinth), and one of my jobs is to look after the companies artwork – Very lucky.
Love looking at it everytime I’m there – Will be watcing tonight!
Hope if I record it Hughes still gets the ratings. By the way Derren I am slowly enjoying your book.
cant wait to see those portraits!!!
ooooh…sounds interesting…..*rushes off and sets the Sky+*
Couldn’t cope with having my head cast, far to claustrophobic. Would probably die.
sorry…..I’m far TOO claustrophobic
You win, hands down! Looks like good viewing.
Looking forward to seeing your LITTLE head.
Hope you’re all well,
Best wishes Jo
Hmmm…makes me wish I had a TV again… π
Oh fantastic, thanks for letting us know. Will watch it if I’m at home…
Sound epic. π
first comment!!! wahhh!!! π
I found the programme really interesting. Apart from Patrick Hughes (what a warm and charming man he came across), I especially liked the part about Van Gogh.
There were such wonderful artists through the ages. How fortunate that we are to be able to see how these people viewed themselves through their own eyes. Their talent enables us to see into the past.

And I canΓΒ΄t watched this in Germany! π π π
I wish to see the pictures! I draw and paint pictures since my childhood, too.
Is there a guide anywhere on how to create my own?
That would be cool. Maybe have one in the WC so when people are having a pital my eyes follow them!!!
