Kindness competition entries
Thank you all for sending us your entries for the rubbish souvenirs from Alton Towers. Aside from those people who completely misunderstood the basic premise, were several who had done some lovely things. A thank you to the lady who has set up the site allowing people to donate to the Parrot Zoo, that’s very good of you.
I have two personal favourites:
i decided to run the race for life this year after finding out my aunty has cancer.since i dont have the cure, i thought this would be the most kindest warmest thing i could do for her and others alike.hopefully completing this will be a small help.i would like you to give me the keyring now and some mind-benders to help me get over running 3 miles.i wouldnt normally run for anything – and I wasn’t going to do this anyway. i really did enter this in order to try and win.
M.
and:
“I made this cake for my grandmother” – it wasn’t her birthday and she wasn’t ill.
Do I win?

One worthy cause, one simple touching gesture (the cake entry had no proof of baking date, which technically could disqualify it – though I’m happy to let it pass because it looks amazing). But I can’t decide between the two. Let me know your thoughts, and then I might toss a coin if I can’t decide.
Meanwhile, I have just taken a genuine spirit photograph. I know I’ve always been sceptical of such things, claiming that we’re just finding patterns in randomness etc, but I just picked up my drink of Diet Pepsi in the bar of this Northampton hotel, which I had no idea was haunted, to find the face of a ghost appearing in the moisture that had formed beneath the glass. I shall show the picture to the staff, as it may be the face of someone who perhaps worked and was murdered here in a previous century. Alternatively, some of you may think that it is the face of Christ himself, and that I have stumbled across something of enormous religious significance. If this is the case, Northampton should brace itself for annual pilgrimages to mark the day of this miracle. Either way, I’d like to hear those closed-minded Western atheist sciencey-types explain this one:
Right, on with the book. I’m paying fifteen pounds to use wi-fi here! Fifteen! This upsets me.
Please continue.

I vote for the cake. Anyone can run/walk/hop for 3 miles but not everyone can make a cake like that! I also make cakes and can assure you that making the basket work look realistic is very difficult. Any numpty who looked close enough can tell it is made from chocolate. Look how it rests on the tray…you cant weave a basket and make the bottom or the top of it completely flat!!!!!
I like the Parrot sanctuary website. It is for a good cause and hopefully will help bring lots more funding for the sanctuary helping many parrots.
I know this isn’t the rules as set out, but how about getting another signed souvenir from somewhere else on your travels and then the Race for life and the cake person can both get something for their troubles. I think they both deserve a prize. Maybe something from the parrot zoo?
I’m sure it won’t matter where it’s from so long as it’s fun and it’s got your picture and autograph on it somewhere!
RACE RACE RACE should WIN!
@Daniel,
Actually not everyone can run/walk for 3 miles. I for one couldn’t even do a mile. There are some people in this world who could never walk for 3 miles. Some cancer patients are lucky enough to get out of bed everyday.
The cake is nice. BUT you also get great pleasure from making it, its sort of a labor of love. Almost like painting.
There is nothing wrong with that. However the race is all about blood, sweat and tears. Its takes physical, mental strength to do it.
I can easily bake a cake anyday, that looks just as good. (no offence) but I couldn’t run 3 miles to save my life unless and I trained really really hard.
RACE TO WIN!
race race rac erac etc
CAKE!! Are people missing the fact that the person did not do it for charity but just to win the prizes (they admitted it!!)? That is NOT a good deed!!!
If you are doing a kind act for someone else to actually get something for yourself, isn’t that actually a bit selfish?
@ Amy, ask Immanuel Kant!
Absolutely HAS to be the CAKE!! I know the cake baker (she’s my sister) and she is a genuinely kind person who should start selling these cakes as they are amazing and scrumptious! ! Lots of people do the Race For Life with the support and help of others but “G” works alone spending long hours creating cakes for friends and family and they are always so interesting and personal. Love you lots, time to start believing in your talents! Anyone who doesnt know a good deed when they see it – let them eat cake! XX
CAKE! CAKE! CAKE! CAKE! This one sounds genuine 😉
The cake has to win!!! It looks fantastic and has obviously taken skill and time to create.
How many people these days do something like this for a relative for no reason other than to make them smile? Although the race for life is a very worthy cause, it’s an organised event and is, rightly, publicly recognised. The same can’t be said for the silent army of people who spend their spare time on something so personal for a family member.
If the cake winning inspires even just a few others to do something similar for someone they care about, or even someone they’ve only just met, the world would be a better place.
Melissa- Apologies for doubting the realness of the cake. The fact a lot of us thought it was a real basket proves that your sister should do this professionally. I’d buy one. Tell her to get set up online 🙂

I too know the cake maker and her cakes are superb, the one she made my husband for his 40th birthday was incredible. VOTE CAKE NOW!
CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE Actually DIANA, Daniel is very correct! you must be extremly un-fit if you cant even walk 3 miles! It takes more practise to make that cake! One thing goes wrong, the cake is ruined ! Whereas, you cant really make any mistakes walking now can you? I know loads of people that do the race for life so its not really a unique talent is it?!!!!!!!!!!!! CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE!
Definately the PARROT one. No disrespect to the others, but its a cake, and loads of people run that race each year for loved ones/ones they have lost to cancer.
xx
Looks like the Cake won it!
