Sense about Science
Morning all.
Sense About Science is a much-needed organisation dedicated to balancing pseudo-science spread in much of the media, with proper facts about food, health and things that matter. Seeing as scare stories spread so well due to their media-friendliness, the scientific community has long needed a voice that would also work with the media rather than shy away from it.
Their latest announcement:
A quick note to give you the advance on our publication ‘I’ve got nothing to lose by trying it’, a guide to weighing up claims about cures and treatments for long-term conditions. Online ads and chat-room conversations testify to the ‘incredible’ benefits of new medicines and treatments selling the empty promise of curing the incurable. The guide is being published by Sense About Science, with the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Motor Neurone Disease Association, Alzheimer’s Society and Parkinson’s Disease Society, and explains how to tell the beneficial from the bogus in the face of the miracle cure stories, new wonder-drugs and breakthrough therapies that are increasingly promoted.
Please look out for it in most newspapers and news programmes from Monday. You will be able to download a free copy from www.senseaboutscience.org from 00:01 hrs Monday.
This is an excellent resource: spread the word.

hmm very interesting stuff!
Tried this? http://pointofinquiry.org/
Read something about that, but I’m not into these kinda people presently. Like to use my own mind to think about things that is and well … dont like reading and annoying myself all the time … Some blabber too much while not knowing anything about it from the inside .. Can’t say of this guy is one of those .. I’m in favor of abortion .. female’s right .. And I donate my own organs .. would I donate my aborted stuff … for a good cause … yes, but à really doubt whether my stuff would be worthwhile using .. would not want to give my own not so healthy codes forward to others .. they don’t know enough yet about the stuff .. Difficult issues .. as there is much more attached to it
Ms G, which of your organs have you donated?
The link was for the site in general, as opposed to the particular subject of this week’s article. The podcasts are worth a listen. There are, amongst others, some great back issues with Jamy Ian Swiss and James Randi.
Will you have donated you mean? I haven’t donated any yet, but when I’m done here on earth they can have anything they want. Oh, I donated blood and my charming personality and ever so uplifting comments ..
I know that it was general .. but people will respond to blog topics from a more personal view quite often ofcourse … Which can be general at the same time .. I mean .. what’s the point of only typing .. oh, how nice … all the time. When submitting links you can expect comments ofcourse, not personally meant ofcourse. 😀
I am constantly amazed at how little scientific understanding so many supposedly educated people have. This site is great and needs to be promoted widely to try and counter the ‘Daily Mail’ science that is all to prevalent. I have personally worked with some of the scientists listed in the Weather & Climate section and know that they are highly regarded experts in their field.
Well that’s a way of looking at things. It is good to have ones views shaken up once in a while so that you can re-examine your personal bias and habits in thinking. I might not really go along with almost everything, but I value your personal insight.
