Dublin
Dublin audiences have a certain mischief about them absent in Belfast, and probably anywhere else I’ve come across. The Grand Canal Theatre was wonderful: it has only been open a few weeks in there, and it is great to play. And a long time coming: the crumbling Olympia has its charm, (it’s a unique experience to perform with rain coming in through a hole in the roof onto the stage), but the new theatre, part of the O2 empire, is a triumph. My voice (thank you for the well-wishes) has become stronger, but I still have to be careful to rest it before and after shows.
The final night in Dublin was not as raucous as I expected. The final night was not the best, (a certain punch was lost in aspects of the second half) , but the crowds each night were marvellous, oddly giggly and very demonstrative. There is another unique aspect to performing there: evenings out start late in that city, and a 7.30 advertised starting time, I was told by locals, is taken as 7.30 for 8. Each night, ready and poised to start the show as 7.30 on the dot, we were still awaiting around 600 people. Each night I eventually walked out around 7.50. I’m not aware of this happening elsewhere, and am unsure whether we should advertise it for 8 next year, or whether that will be taken as an 8.30 start… A curious but somehow fitting idiosyncrasy of that very special city. And the Guinness… oh yes.
Sunday morning we left for an early ferry at 7 am. This is what the rest of the bunch look like at that time:
It was a very long day. We slept a bit on the ferry, and got up only to go and watch an advertised magic show on the deck below. It turned out to be a show for the very young kids who, sensibly, would benefit from the distraction, so we left the cheery chap to do his best with them. Although I did consider standing at the back and staring him out for the whole thing. After hours of intermittent napping and trying to get the internet to work, we poured out, onto a coach, and then onto a minibus that got us into Cardiff for about 8pm. It was a long, scenic route, punctuated by a stop for truly disastrous fish and chips in Aberystwyth. Here’s Coops and popular new boy Jonas at unnamed cafΓ©:
It was a long drive after a long ferry-ride: we were exhausted and it was difficult to sleep. Conversations, bleary and hallucinogenic, at one point turned to a hushed discussion of how, if we absolutely had to, we could best kill the driver and dispose of the body. Iain, as we knew, is something of an expert on mass murderers, and much of our solution hinged on whether or not Jennie had anything in her kit which would allow us to grind the driver’s bones down to dust. She didn’t, and he was spared.
Tonight’s show is at St Davids: another concert hall, but another guaranteed very good crowd. I’m being spoilt at the moment. Maybe see you there.
x
No need to grind up bones if you have a bit of quick lime. Anyhoo. At least you weren’t completely stranded. Guy my mother works with is stuck in the caribean…..
Sounds like some good crowds in Ireland.
With any luck you’ll see more from the welsh. Looking forward to tomorrows show!. Have a good one tonight!. x
…the collage! Loving it, of course, and the excellent photoshopping skill evident (Abeo? Phillis?). You surprise me; it’s just another expression of the unpredictability of Derren Brown, I suppose.
Glad you all made it to Cardiff in one piece, including the bus driver.
“. Each night I eventually walked out around 7.50. IΓ’β¬β’m not aware of this happening elsewhere, and am unsure whether we should advertise it for 8 next year, or whether that will be taken as an 8.30 start”
yeah that’s what will happen. Advertise at 7pm, is the solution.
I was at the Dublin show on Friday night (Jonny who was on stage towards the end is a friend of mine) and can’t really say enough good things about it. I’ve resisted being specific when people have asked me what happens in the show though, so I think they don’t believe me when I praise it so highly. I’ll definitely go see you again in future, thanks for a wonderful performance.
Have to disagree regarding the Olympia though. The new theatre is absolutely fantastic but for me the Olympia is still the best venue in the city.
Hi Derren,
I was lucky enough to receive Tickets to your show on Saturday as a birthday gift from a sister who knows i’m a big fan.
Seeing your performances up close was amazing. The girlfriend came along, not especially interested as she had turned down my requests for her to watch your DVDs many a time, but she was blown away. The tricks, the theatre, the comedy, everythin together makes it a brilliant show and he can’t wait til you return to Dublin so we cam attend again.
Many thanks for a great night out.
Ha glad you landed safely in Cardiff, love the montage especially the Guinigma pic!! Would suggest stating 7.30 or 8 pm sharp on tickets in future here in Ireland and also perhaps to get promoter to send emails to people who buy through ticketmaster that the show will start at bang on whatever. I think the mind set here for any concert is to get quite a few drinks inside you, miss whatever support act is on and arrive in the auditorium/arena at around ten past nine in a raucous mood π Cant wait till next tour Derren, it was a fantastic show. Thanks a million for playing Dublin and good luck with the rest of the tour.
I was there on Thursday and show was fantastic!
In terms of Irish time – always ask for us to be somewhere half an hour before you actually want us there- we take it as given that 7.30 means 8pm… (though I was there bang on time!!)
Good luck tonight in Wales gang!!!
Thank you for an awsome show in Belfast. I know what you mean, Derren, about the lacking mischeif. People here dont seem to want to give very much away, they are very serious. Must get tiring… But you did great, great jokes, genius show – loved every second of it – and, as always, you were like a blue-arsed fly on speed! How come youre not drenched in sweat by the end of it? Oh yeah, youre superhuman. (sorry, cheap joke.) Thank you all for all the effort and work you put in. You really work hard and it shows. Keep up the good work!
xx
Really enjoyed the show on Saturday. Very entertaining as always. By the way, if you do advertise it for 8 next year, we will take that as 8.30 π
“Be he alive or be he dead, I’ll grind his bones to make my bread!”
Ick, 13 hours travelling?! hope it was a pleasing scenic route!!
tbh when i got my tickets for grimsby i thought it meant doors open at 7:30 for 8 start….so we got there at 7:30 literally a minute before show started lol! needless to say this time round i contacted venue and found out what time doors open and got there at 6:30! lol
Hello to new boy Jonas, as i scanned through the first time i thought it said Coops was with 1 of the Jonas brothers…..LOL
Have a good show tonight!
Oh and Yay to my “guinigma” irish derren pic being used in the collage!! Exciting!!! π
x
Ha, yes the reason the dublin crowd were mischevous rather than raucous was the 7.30 start was a little bit too early to get the drinks in. The tongue was nearly hanging out of me by the interval though the time had flown as the show is absolutely amazing and funny and mind-shaking and eye-popping and bananas. Loved it – yer a trooper with the ash and voice and all. Bethehokey I tip my little green hat while doing a little jig for you…
derren looks smashing in that lovely frock. see what too much guinness can do to ya? π
glad to hear the theater found a solution for fixing a hole where the rain comes in & stops your mind from wandering where it will go…
LH&S,
roz
Was at saturday nights show, had a blast! still trying to figure how you did some of the tricks π as regards to people turning up late. I hate to generalise so for everyone i know if you tell them to be somewhere at a certain time they will all be about half an hour late. So if you want a show to start at 7.30 advertise the start for 7 π
Looove the collage – with such great images (proud as myself and Lady Claire)
Thanks π
Ha ha, Dublin sounds like my ‘sister syndrome’ in that I’ve learnt if I ask her to turn up at a certain time, she’ll always come 30 minutes after that! So I’ve taken to telling her a much earlier time now so’s she’s there when she should be! π
Anyway…..wow, sounds one hell of a tiring Sunday of travel you & the crew had. But for all that you sound in good spirits Derren, and I’m glad your voice is improving, even if not quite as strong as it should be.
And thank you so much for using my drawing in the collage. I’m overjoyed about that!! π
Take care,
LC x
Hi Derren!
Just had to let you know how much I enjoyed Enigma. Was at Grand Canal Theatre on Friday night…what can I say?! A-MAZ-ING!!! Outstanding show – I was gripped from the minute I sat in my seat! Frisbee came my way twice (i was bang in the middle of the upper circle), but dipped just in front each time…maybe next time?! Fingers crossed! It was truly out of this world – I am in total and utter awe of you Mr Brown. And the fact that you’re a big fan of David Tennant (he’s my favourite too!) just confirms your legendary status in my eyes! Congratulations on a fantastic performance – can’t wait for the next one!xx
Should also say- love the collage!! π (Mine is the Irish dancing Derren!)
Hi Derren,
I was at your show on Thursday night in Dublin. It was brilliant! First time I have been to one off your shows and it was staggering. Don’t know how you did it. It was great the way you remembered everyone’s name which is a feat in itself. Absoltely loved the ***SPOILER REMOVED***. The ending was excellent not because it was the ending but because of the way everything tied in. Definately looking forward to seeing you again in Ireland. hope you will get some wel earned rest it must be tough focusing on what you are doing for that amount of time. Anyway better go. Take care and all the best for the rest of your tour.
Thanks again for a great night.
Ann
Oh my gosh I love the pictures in the collage? Who made it? If it was made by fans, then I seriously need to outdo them if – no, WHEN, – I see the next live tour that you guys do. Looking forward to then… Good luck with the rest of the tour – can’t wait for the next series on TV!
x π
Glad you had great time in Dublin. I was on stage at last performance in Belfast. Surreal time for me. Come back and see us soon x
The tour madness has set in. You shouldn’t have posted this Derren; from now on, whenever you get a taxi, the driver will, for some unknown reason, throw open the door, and run like hell. π
Was at the saturday night show was brilliant really really enjoyed it! please come back again soon, though next time u should come to Cork if u think the crowds are good in Dublin u should come visit us down here π anyway good luck with the rest of the show!
ah yeah, Irish time, my spanish friend had a real problem with this one as well. rule of tumb always ask an irish person to be somewhere at least 30 minutes before before you actually want them. The same goes for trains, buses, etc.
When you left for the ferry at 7pm does that mean you really left at 7.30, lol thats irish xxx me to neither and him aswell xx mwah
BTW I DO THINK YOUR FANTASTIC
That sounds so tiring. I’m surprised you had the energy to blog this – I’d be curled up somewhere in a blankie, with some hot chocolate π Also, I think I’d better pass a note to our local taxi services π
As for the shows, I’ve heard nothing but (very justified) praise from the twittosphere π
Ooh, am loving the Irish collage! Am glad one of my pics was used in it..although it’s a shame that my other *ahem* “inappropriate” one wasn’t used π
I was at the show on Saturday in Dublin and as usual I was so blown away; the show was spectacular and my mum wasnt disappointed. She has been questioning everything since and is majorly confused…as she should be! She gave you a painting via Coops and I hope you liked it. My mum is all about the landscapes whereas I more of a portrait person. Thanks for using my sketch in the collage (mine is the Guinness Ad with the toucan) its so cool to see one of my sketches on your site π super chuffed!
Anyways hope your throat continues to get better and thanks for a great night in Dublin; looking forward to seeing the show again with my friend Kate who is another Enigma newbie… fun fun!!
Take Care
Elly x
You wanted mischievousness in Belfast? You should have said. I had the perfect opportunity to pinch your bum but I didn’t. IF ONLY I’D KNOWN! Lol.
Hi Derren I went to see Enigma on sat with my darling daughter Elly my goodness i was so impressed you blew me away. All my kids tell me how great you are the boys really look up to you Alister the youngest is really into his magic and entertains us all the time. George god love him is on a par with Tommy cooper he tries to get it right but it always goes wrong but he makes me laugh so much. Elly is the one who really loves mystery and likes watching things over and over she likes to try to figure out how its all done!! but as for me i don’t want to know how its done i love to to feel like an innocent child and just be so impressed. Congratulations on a brilliant show i really enjoyed it hope you liked the painting regards fern
Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou for your wonderful performance in Cardiff tonight.. you truly are a clever man!
Yay! You’re in Cardiff! Hope the first night in St David’s Hall went well, I shall be seeing you there tomorrow and CANNOT WAIT! π
xxx
I’m sat in work my mind is still fried from what I saw at the show tonight! Bloody great show Derren! Was happy to meet you back at the hotel as well! Thanks for putting a MASSIVE smile on my face! π
Guinness .. wasn’t that that stuff for the slower drinkers among us?
The collage .. what’s with the nuns ? I mean .. nuns???
Cardiff was brilliant. My sister, who saw Derren for the first time last night, thought it “phenomenal” – praise indeed from someone who thought Les Mis was “ok”
Oh bugger!? My wife was right, you *did* want us in the theatre at 7.30pm. “He’s English, when he says 7.30pm, he probably means 7.30pm” .. sorry, I took it as a given that you were going to start at 8 .. I wouldn’t have ordered those three pints otherwise, I’ll know better in future
Fergal
The best thing to do when appearing in Ireland is to make sure all advertising contains the words, “Please note: Derren will be onstage at 7.30 sharp”, then they will be there on time
Noel
I agree with you Derren. Saturday second half did lack punch. I could not put my finger on it. On the Start time issue. Ask Ticketmaster to put the word Sharp after the start time for Irish Audiences. also I wouldnt have left ΓΒ½ a pint of Γ’βΒ¬7 Paulaner to rush into a theatre asn sit there for 15 mins.
Dec.
Cant believe the 7.30 for 8 doesnt happen everywhere else!
Although we were there for 7.30 I still expected to be able to get a pint before the show started.
We treat starting times the same way we treat speed limits, as suggestions!
So for 7.30 we see “in and around 7.30 will be grand”
for 80 kph we see “around 80, but not too much faster”
Oh and despite what you think Derren, Saturday night was brilliant. Thanks for a great night.
Sorry but I think turning up late for a show is as bad as getting up during the show to go to the toilet, rude and inconciderate. If I were you I would put 6.30pm start and keep them waiting until 7.30pm, see how they like it.
I don’t get this 7.30 for 8 thing. Don’t Irish tickets say ‘Doors [time], show starts [time]’ like Dutch tickets do? I can’t even remember if my UK tickets said that, actually, but I’d be surprised if they didn’t. I mean, I can see assuming 7.30 is the ‘doors’ time if it’s not specified, sort of.
helluva show on saturday Derren, was great.
as others have said above, irish people dont really get there on time, to a lot the pub is more important (shamefully)
next time say sharp or at 7:15
haha, my dad was the exact same
“7:30? Sure we’ll be grand if we get there at 7:30”
No dad, it starts at 7:30 XD
I noticed the second half of Saturday was a bit dull. :/
But other wise I had a GREAT time π I’d love to see you again π
Just for those confused by the time thing: it doesn’t matter what time anything says it’ll start, it always starts later, usually by about half an hour. This phenomenon is called Irish Time.
I’m actually not kidding. Nothing here starts on time. Ever.
I was at the show at Saturday night in Dublin. We travelled up from Cork but would have travelled ten times as far for such an experience. I certainly noticed nothing lacking in the second half and was utterly enthralled and diverted throughout. My friends and I all agreed it was tone of he most memorable experiences we’d ever had. Thank you for the fantastic evening out and hope you will forgive our lateness (not that I was late π ) and come back again.
much love xx
So whos going to start the Jonas fan club then?
Abeo has her followers and Phillis … we all know about the prevention of one due to the resignment of gender back in the early 90s being botched…
So its Abeo’s boys, Philli’s fluffers and Jonas’s …..
Cheers
Rob
Thoroughly enjoyed the Thursday show in the Grand Canal Theatre, really looking forward to next year, no matter what time you advertise to start at
Hi there,
great show in the Grand Canal indeed! Thank you so much for it!
Who is this Jonas? Coopies bf π ?
Bye
Beccy
Derren,
Been a fan for so many years now, you always have such an energy when doing a show. I made my whole family go we’re all huge fans and we were absolutely blown away. We’ve watched all your shows and were still amazed at how you do everything. You are such a genius. Please come back soon π P.s I was at the Thursday show and I apologize for the guy in the audience who shouted Bob when you were asking the girls there names haha!
Also amazing stewie impression π ***SPOILER REMOVED***
Sincere thanks for an amazing night my friends were at the Friday show and since then everytime we meet we always talk about how you did the tricks
Anna xo
