Edinburgh
Oh Em Gee. What a wonderful two nights. After being warned that Edinburgh audiences would be tough (apparently due to a weariness and over-seasoned-ness following so many fine fringe performers), we had the most overwhelmingly enthusiastic response of any venue. The 3008-strong sold out Playhouse let rip both nights when I walked out and didn’t stop until after their fantastically appreciative and immediate leaping-to-feet-twice response at the end. Many thanks, we were all on a real high because of you lot.
I spent most of the time with the glorious parapsychology duo Richard Wiseman and Caroline Watt, discussing ghosties and exploring the city. And what a stunner it is. A personal highlight was visiting the Camera Obscura up by the castle: well well worth a visit and the finest I’ve seen.
Our hotel was a bit of a downer: Edinburgh lets the side royally down on the normally glorious MalMaison front. ‘Poor Diddums’, I hear you protest. ‘Was the poor telly-welly star not looked after by the hotelsy-welsy? Did he not get the right champagney-wagney in his roomikins?’
Well, it IS a poor sister of the other MalMaisons (no aircon, the wifi is broken and no-one seems arsed to fix it), but no matter there. All that matters is friendliness. We had come from the Roslin in Southend, which is very modest in comparison to the purple sumptuousness of a MalMaison, but was so extraordinarily welcoming throughout. This is such a treat, and trumps such meaningless peripherals as fancy decor. The MalMaison chain is always so friendly too: Liverpool, for example and not surprisingly, boasts probably the most friendly of the chain. In Edinburgh, aside from the few local bar and restaurant staff, the attitude was uniformly sterile. First night after-show conversation at reception:
(me): Hello, can we have a bite from the night menu in the bar?
(reception guy, East-European accent): No, only in your rooms.
(me): Ah, do you have some room where we can eat together? We stay in a lot of MalMaisons and they always pop us in a side-room when they can’t serve in the bar.
(him): No.
Pause
(me): Do you have a little meeting room? Normally we’d sit in a meeting room if there wasn’t anywhere else, just to have a bite.
(him): We have a meeting room but no, we won’t do this.
(me): Brilliant, thank you.
And so on. Rather like our similar experience in Buxton, it’s a real shame how all the poshness and carpeted walls and silly tall chairs in the world mean nothing when some member of staff can’t just be nice. I remember fondly the Wolverhampton Novotel last year: a fairly grim hotel by the normal standards, but made wonderful by the most friendly and helpful staff. Thank you, any of the lovely men and ladies who have made our hotel stays so pleasant.
The big plus of staying at the MalMaison, though, was discovering Fishers at Leith, the Edinburgh fish restaurant and all-round institution, which was right next to the hotel. You simply must get your fine, shapely arses down there if you’re unfamiliar. Or familiar. My dear sweet non-existent Supreme Being. Oh. Oh oh oh. Fish soup? Think you’ve had fish soup? Get OUT.
Get to Fishers, have soup, the seabass, have any of it; go see Luke or Eddie and tell them I sent you. And the friendliest bunch! So delightful, in fact, that we invited them to the show and I ended up drinking a fine Barolo back at Eddie’s girlfriend’s friend Fiona’s flat after the show with their gang… a long story. Much fun.
We have arisen too early after a late night to drive to Bradford. The snow on these A-roads is fantastic. But we’re tired. If we don’t make it, it’s because Coops fell asleep at the wheel.
Fingers crossed.
Glad you had fun in Edinburgh, simply amazing show, and I think I saw your nod for the first time ever.
Oh no what a shame – i have always found the staff at the Leith Mal most helpful.
Next time you go tell them I sent you π I stayed there so often I had my own room on a retainer and was able to leave a packed suitcase there!!!
Have a wonderful time in Yorkshire – I hope the crowds will wow you with their friendlyness!!
I’m off to see the wonderful Peter Kay night!! So giddy with excitement – as the theatre only has 200 seats!
Enjoy the Chocolate Giving Holiday.
Sarah xx
Ha love how you ended you conversation with unhelpful reception guy with “brilliant.”
* “your” conversation – epic spelling fail
It’s quite satisfying to know that some people are still immune to your mind-mongering.
I was at the first Edinburgh show and I am still awake, still confused, still completely in a state of admiration, love and appreciation that you are who you are , doing what you are doing. Next weeks wages are spent on more dates to come and see the show again, I simply have to and thats that! So WAKE UP coops, I have to see Derren again! Much love to you all, Michelle xx
Hello!!! I went to both nights and you thoroughly deserved those double standing ovations!!!!! Thank you for a fantastic two nights! I look forward to seeing enigma again in Glasgow!!! Many many thanks for squeezing in a photo backstage, I know you were in a rush!! Love to you all and the rest of your hard working crew!!! (hello to jenny who I spoke to briefly, she is a wee star!!!) xxxxx
show was FANTASTIC! And meeting Derren afterwards was just as great! Thanks for signing the book, and having a picture taken with me. Hope you like your piccy i drew you π xx
Hello!!!! I attended both nights and I must say you thoroughly deserved those double standing ovations!!!! Thank you for having the time to sign
and squeeze pic’s in despite you being in a hurry-you are a true gentleman xxx
And a special thank you to your crew for a splendid job! (spoke to jenny briefly, she is a wee darlin) oh and coops I’m the one who bugged you for a picture, thank you for that! Still don’t know how you knew my name btw!! Haha! XXXXXXXX
Glad to see you seem more upbeat DB. As a sensitive and conscientious bloke, I’m guessing that a slightly ‘less than receptive’ audience can really leave you feeling deflated and on the “back foot”.
The newly invigorated you can now move happily onwards and upwards (or should that be downwards?) to the next venue. Good Luck x
“Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can read”. Tis a shame more people in all professions & walks of life can’t adhere to this.
Glad you had a great time in Edinburgh, Derren. Safe journey to Bradford.
Take care
LC x
aww poor diddums π
hope you do make it to bradford
can’t wait to see you tomorrow π x
Thank you for an amazing night… Had to wait 5 months for it but u were sooooo worth it π you absolutely made my night for posing for a pic even when u had said no pictures as u were away for a meal xxx can’t wait to see enigma again as I was sooo hyper at actually seeing u on stage, I don’t think I took anything in!!!!! Will concentrate next time which is may 20th in Glasgow !! Can’t wait and see you soon xxxxxx
You were phenomenal. Deserved the two standing ovations you received on Thurs night in Edinburgh. Very well done.
Will try out the restaurant in Leith.
Thanks for a great evening,
Natalie
Blimey Derren, I can only hope that the hotel accommodation in Bradford meets your expectations!! Only joking. Even the poshest, swankiest and most tastefully decorated hotel can turn into something awful if the staff don’t provide a warm welcome, or at least make an attempt to be civil.
At last, 4th April is nearly here and I can’t wait as I’m coming to see your show tomorrow night. No more counting the days and one more sleep to go!
Hope you have a great time in Bradford! x
Lmao…it tuk me forever to read through this post because i had to keep stopping to catch my breath from laughing so much…sounds like Uve been having fun all around.lol. I think you should give an overall hotel evaluation after the tour, and im sure you can get some places in plenty of trouble.lol. Have fun in bradford.
Take care
Hi Derren, thanks for another fantastic night! After your Mind Reader show in Glasgow I said, and am often quoted as saying, it was “the best thing I’ve ever seen”. Since then, every time I go to see a show, I’m always asked (in a very sarcastic manner) if it was “as good as Derren Brown”. You are the benchmark by which I rate my enjoyment of theatre! π
Seriously though, it was a very impressive show, you just keep upping the ante. Standing ovation well deserved! Thanks very much x
Dezbo,
I was at the playhouse last night and thouroughly enjoyed every single minute of the hugely entertaing and, at times, jaw-dropping show. Oh how we laughed, oh how we nearly cried (but for us a tough scotsmen, a lump in the throat is as far as it goes).
I happened to be sitting in an aisle seat. I touched the hem of your garment as you walked by. Did you feel the power go out of you ? π
Well done you curious little, bi-pedal, carbon-based life form.
Craig.
I just freaked out until I realised the tour comes BACK to Edinburgh in June! Phew! (*pats tickets tenderly*)
Shame about the Malmaison – isn’t that French for ‘bad house’? π
Well that sounds familiar. I have been coming to the UK 3 to 5 times a year and since 2001 the service has been decline, at the same rate of bringing in under paid eastern european workers.
Maybe in the old USSR it was normal to say “no” and not look for an alternative but here it is not.
I have a small hotel in Hammersmith which I have been coming to 10 years. Last year (like so often) I arrived early before official check in. All I ask for was to get the room and pop my luggage there and get back ofter 3pm.
The eastern european woman merely said no that is impossible. So I explained that it was very easy and how I didn’t see me hauling props for my show through London for 5 hours.
Then the owner came we shook hands and it was taken care off. I do not like that kind of service.
My second time seeing ‘enigma’ – just as delightful the 2nd time around and lovely to sit with the benefit of previous viewings to see the befuddlement of those called on stage and hear the appreciative gasps of the audience. No less wonderful on repeated viewings. π
A special thank you for being so kind to my son at the stage door after the show. It was his 12th birthday and you signed his yu-gi-oh card (to the collective ‘ahw’s of those assembled) with great chivalry and your usual delightful attention to your fans. We drove back to Glasgow with Mo concerned that you would suffer indigestion from your late dinner. It is lovely to meet someone in the public eyewho is articulate, intelligent, warm and genuine. you’re a lovely role model, thank you.
the show last night was amazing. i can’t believe i was on stage for such an amazing trick. thanks for taking time at the end to sign what i got to take away with me – can’t believe it’s the first like that you’ve signed! great show, can’t wait to go to another one. enjoy the rest of the tour! and to anyone who has tickets for any of the future shows – think how amazing you expect it to be and it’ll surpass that. π xx
Was there for the first night, just amazing. So funny making fun of Andy all the time, brilliant. Come back soon!
Superb performance that I shall remember for many many years.
It’s a bit of a shame that your hotel experience was poor, ItΓ’β¬β’s unfortunate that many people who work in hospitality donΓ’β¬β’t understand the meaning of the term.
Be sure to return to Glasgow; not as pretty as the Capital, but much more friendly.
Glad you had such a pleasant stay :p I went to the show on April 1st. It was amazing. It would have been amazing to get picked for your tricks. If you do the trick or treat shows again I would be very eager to be part of it. π after the the show I went home an re-read the Tricks of the mind book. I tried some of the tricks with my boyfriend but failed miserably. However I did remember the list of 20 words first time. Yes, I know, smart arse. Anyway I hope you come back to Edinburgh soon as it was the best night I’ve had in ages. Well done on such a big success!
Elissa π
i’m going to the show tonight and can’t wait π x
Amazing show! Absolutely adored it! So close to joining you on stage on the first night. Shame about your hotel though. I’m also very dissapointed to hear hat richard wiseman and co had joined you – an avid fan of all! Thank you for being a pure gentleman after the show. Thank you for doing what you do – you never fail to impress and inspire me, and I am very grateful. Stay safe x
Oops – sounds like I was dissapointed richard wiseman and co was there with you – I meant dissapointed I didn’t meet them also! X
so there’s a hotel in the southend named after me, eh? awesome!
fingers pentacled here fer you, dood…sounds like ya stole the audience from a proclaimers concert! π
Missed you in Edinburgh by a day, but caught your Liverpool show. We also travelled along the A Roads en route home, and saw the snow stacked high! A beautiful sight, like something out of a Dickens Novel! Hope you’ve arrived back in England all safe and sound.
Couldn’t get tickets for Edinburgh. Gutted! The Mal at Edinburgh used to be great, but they’re trying to sell it off I believe and don’t really put the effort in now.
I thought the show was just amazing, totally mind blowing but hilarious at the same time, I haven’t stopped going on about it since I left on the thursday :). I can’t wait until you come back to edinburgh again with a different show! However stay in a different hotel next time, usually people in edinburgh are really nice, I’m gutted you didn’t get to meet the majority of lovely people. Loved every minute of it. Xx
quite agree re edinburgh malmaison, also my experience, grumpy unfriendly staff, tatty bedrooms, crap breakfasts BY far worst malmaison in the chain. If you do edinburgh again, try the sister chain Hotel du Vin, think you would enjoy that it was once an asylum. Agree about Fishers on the shore, and for future reference; Fishers in the city is poor in comparison. Anyway sorry missed you at the playhouse didnt see the show advertised ANYWHERE. The first guy mentioned your nod – I see that all the time I watch you, is it significant in the show or just ticcing?
wondering what it is that makes a toilet tissue “professional”?
Still have no words to desribe your show apart from AMAZING. ***SPOILER REMOVED*** , one of the best shows ever.
Thank you for an inspiring show on the 1st, it surpassed any expectations I may have had and I cannot wait to see you again in the future. When you are next back in Edinburgh you should try Diner 7 down by The Shore, it is over the bridge towards Granton – about 20 metres along on the left hand side. A small and hospitable place with great food and excellent service. Thanks again!
Well, I’m not surprised the staff at the MalMaison were cool towards you Derren, if you INSISTED on having your own personalised lavatory paper! π
TV Divas!
Saw you in Edinburgh at the playhouse on April 1st and it was absolutely fantastic! Great way to spend my birthday. There was never one moment that I wasnΓ’β¬β’t mesmerised and shocked (in a good way) with everything you done. Oh also your impression of Scottish people and your Stewie Griffin impression was hilarious! Cant wait to go to another show π
Thanks for a fantastic night Derren! This was my first show and it left me wanting more. Going on stage and taking part was an exhilirating experience, though I am still unsure what happened – amazing! :-). You definitely deserved the ‘double standing ovation’! Thank you for signing my book at the end of the night even though you were in a rush. You were a true gentleman. I’ll definitely be booking tickets again to see you. Enjoy the rest of your tour!!!!
We were at the show last night Derren. Still scratching my head mate. You are some sort of genius wizard… Top night. One of the best nights at the theatre I have ever had. Big thanks
Derren, Derren, Derren, what a fabby show you put on on Thursday night. Spent the day in Edinburgh feeling rather unwell but keeping my eyes peeled for you (with no avail) but was soon put at ease by the fantasticness of the Enigma show. Was more mind blowing, impressive and intriguing than on the telly, and you’re a rather funny man if I may say so also (funny ‘haha’ not funny ‘weird’).
Without giving anything away, I was on my feet at one point during the show, and obviously at the end during the standing ovation! Couldnae believe Richard Wiseman was there on the same night as me also!
Anyhoo, will be back again at some point to bask in the marvel that is you. As a Psychology graduate and general lover of all things interesting, you blew my little Scottish sock off.
Emma π
Snow on A-roads and then falling asleep????? That’s not a good sign .. You should feel stimulated to race over those roads .. I heard about the heavy snow fall over there. It’s spring here. New fresh young leaves, sun is still a bit shy, but she’ll come around. Bought 2 new birds instead of going hormonal myself (oh well, apart from that vet perhaps ..).
Comments show that people enjoyed the shows. Some seem to think that they can get some extra miles by going more than once.
Hotels .. only if I’m on my own there hospitality may be a bit more an issue to me, but too attentive does not feel good for me either.
sorry abt your hotel staff being arsey u will have a better time in liverpool next month (100%grt)
Was at the first night and it was amazing!!!! Still trying to work out how you done it all π
Bloody brilliant, amazing, mind blowing, astounding, breath taking, genius – there just aren’t enough words to describe how good the show on Thursday in Edinburgh was!!!
THE best show of any description I have ever seen bar none!
Was with Andrew (***SPOILER REMOVED***) and his girlfriend amy…he was absolutely mortified but me and amy were pissing ourselves laughing!
Thank you Derren Brown for making my night and indeed my year! Cant wait to watch it on tv again and see your next stage show in two years time…altho I might not make it that long – its far too long to wait!!
Thanks
Sam xx
Oh and always look at a hotel on Trip Advisor before you book – will save you a lot of hassle!
Utterly amazing show last night at the Playhouse! Been trying to pick a favourite part but just can’t, we’ve been talking about it all day! You so deserve every standing ovation you get, just a stunning performance, completely in awe of everything you do! My sister and I were looking forward to 2nd April for months and months and you exceeded every expectation we had! Hope you enjoy the rest of your tour but please hurry back to Scotland, we loved every second!!! xxx
Saw you on Thursday and it was absolutely amazing!! It rendered me speechless, which is no mean feat! You thorougly deserved the standing ovations, it was a great night! Thanks also for spending time signing stuff and letting us take photos – such a lovely thing to do and it makes all your fans love you more! Thanks for a wonderful night ;-))
On you’re way to Bradford? At least here in Yorkshire, everybody is nice and polite. If they’re not, we boot them out to live in Lancashire! Hope we treat you better than the Edinburgers. I know keep saying it, but it has to be Rotherham’s turn…………..
Amazing show last night. Loved it.
What a fantastic show!! I was so excited to go and it was well worth the wait (Christmas). You never fail to amaze me and (without sounding cheesy) even being in the same room as you gave me goosebumps π I love the work you do and have ordered Trick Of The Mind (s1), An Evening Of Wonders, The Specials dvd’s and the Trick Of The Mind book. Cannot wait π
Thank you for the best show of my life – hoping to get tickets to see you again as soon as possible and hopefully get on stage this time π
