Ipswich and Southend
Ipswich brought great audiences. A little slow to warm up on the first day, Thursday, they were lively and forthcoming soon enough, and the auditorium has a fresh and bright sound from the stage. The shows felt good. We were staying in the excellent Salthouse Harbour Hotel, and looked after by a hugely friendly staff. Rather nicely, there were only ten or so people at the stage door each night, all pleasant and unassuming, which meant charming, relaxed hellos and time to chat.
Southend’s first night was fine but did not feel great to me. After a couple of loud houses, The Cliffs Pavilion’s auditorium stretches far back, away from the stage, and the balcony sits at its furthest reaches. It means that from the stage, you only hear the front half of the audience. On top of that, the Sunday night crowd was typical of those from that day: tired from an afternoon’s sloth or activities, aware of work in the morning, a little unresponsive. There is a classic pattern, known to actors and entertainers, of a rising enthusiasm from the house as the week moves on, generally peaking on Friday with a lively and attentive audience. Saturdays can be boisterous, but are also slacker than the Friday, and made up of larger, less attentive groups. Sundays generally are a little quiet, unless there is a Bank Holiday the next day (which will in itself tend to offer another tired and unengaged crowd).
The show was good enough, but I was surprised by the relatively quiet audience and unfulfilling feedback due to the ungenerous architecture, and the strange energy loop that exists between the audience and me on a good night did not make itself known. Pushing to reach the seemingly silent reaches of the auditorium, my voice was also rather cracked.
The second night – yesterday – was much better. The crowd was lively and responsive, and I had got used to the unhelpful acoustics of the room. My voice was stronger and the audience were once again part of the dynamic of the show. We were also joined by our lovely friend Stephen Long who has worked on previous tours, and who has come out to help out for a couple of nights. It was rather fun to see him carrying things on and off stage: such little changes help keep the show feeling fun and alive for me.
Southend proves to be a pleasant place to sit and read overlooking the sea: I am hugely enjoying Simon Callow’s Being An Actor and a break from the laptop. I have not been Twittering or blogging recently either: the former has started to feel a tad exhausting and joyless of late, so I shall for the moment at least give it a little break.
It’s blustery and wet today, and I think the sea looks its best when it’s grey and bleak. Some poor girl in a flapping anorak is running, enervated, along the sea-front through the miserable weather, and a lady is having a dispiriting sandwich from a plastic lunch box on a bench under a beach shelter. All, in a grim, glum way, is right with the world.
Not long till Edinburgh now… Not that I’ll be there (I now despise you Derren OJ OJ) Ha. I’m sneaking in the back door.
I very much wanted to come and say hello after seeing you in Ipswich, but I’m awful at talking to people so I didn’t. I hope by the time you come back I’ve learnt to not be quite so socially challenged!
You were wonderful and, in a strange way, also very inspiring. Some of the things you said have given me a little push- thank you.
As usual a wonderfully insightful look into your thoughts on Enigma etc. But oh Derren, how low & down you sound. Perhaps not intentionally, but you do seem incredibly sad in your post here. I hope things are otherwise ok?
As a tweeter myself (although, I myself, don’t do it so much now) I’m really sorry to hear you finding it ‘exhausting & joyless’ at the mo. Obviously if it holds no pleasure for you in posting messages on there, then don’t do it, of course. I hope, as you say, that this is indeed a temporary break from Twitter and you’re back on there soon.
And your last paragraph is exactly how I feel…I was sitting on Worthing seafront the other day, grey skies, sea lashing the shore & I loved it! 🙂
Take care & keep happy….
LC x
Don’t leave it too long… we miss your tweets! =( x
What a sad sounding blog post 🙁
I hope you are ok and are looking after yourself. It’s hard being away from home so much – I have spent much of the last 5 years living out of suitcases so can sympathise completely.
I hope you have a good time in Scotland
Sarah x
I do hope you are ok and taking good care of yourself……. Will miss your tweets but it’s important you do what’s right for you. Hope to see you back tweeting soon x see you in Edinburgh xxxx Diane xxxx
Really disappointed to hear about your feelings on Sunday. Myself and my girlfriend thoroughly enjoyed the show and the general feeling around us was positive. I guess what your saying about it being a Sunday would make sense, and I also don’t know how your other audiences have been but I can safely say I had a great night! Also was great to meet you after!
I was at Monday nights show, the first time I’ve been to see you live and left there in amazement.
A masterpiece of a show, and the finale made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Pure genius throughout, I can’t wait for your new book and will be sure to come and see a live show on the next tour. Thank you for a wonderful mind blowing experience.
Dean
Your shows would still be abnormally amazing even if you were dressed as a banana and carrying a frying pan.
You guys are awesome.
🙂
Derren, Ipswich was amazing on Saturday night! Thank you so much for having my up on stage, was something i will never ever forget! and thank you for being so lovely at the stage door and signing my book, even though you were a cheeky monkey lol!
If you havent been twittering lately, does that mean the tweet you sent me wasnt actually from you??? 🙁 i hope it was
I just wanna give you a big hug again, you sound so tired and worn out!
Chin up 🙂 xxxxxxxx
Ah glad to know our audience last night were the best out of the Southend slog of the tour. I had such a fantastic time, and really enjoyed the show! Fantastic meeting you after the show, thank you for signing my copy of Portraits, makes it all the more special to have! 🙂
Things are always right with the world when you’re running 🙂
I`m not one for reading Blogs usually, but i found this one excellent. Very interesting learning about the acoustics and dynamics of the theatres for you on stage, never thought of it before.
Wish i could have come to the Ipswich show, ah well next time.
It is always lovely to hear that you are doing well, Derren. I completely agree that the sea looks best in typical English weather – maybe it’s just English seasides that look best like that?
I am greatly looking foward to seeing Enigma on saturday 10th April, it is a 60 mile journey from Essex to Milton Keynes that is completely worth every second of travel. My fiance and I both adore (and fancy the pants off of) you and so are likely to be lurking creepily at the stage door afterwards, I’m sure that the show shall go incredibly well – and all shows before that.
Hi Derren,
Sorry to hear you thought the show did not go so well on Sunday in Southend! Everyone I talked to afterwards loved it especially ME! Sorry if the audience applauding did not sound loud…but i was definitly clapping as lowd as i couuld! 🙂 You are a legend and me and all my friends will definitly come to your next tour! Hope you are ok…you a legend!
Hope you get to read this! 😀
🙂
p.s thanks for the autograugh!
Ollie
After being a huge fan of yours for a fair few years now, came to see your show on Saturday in Ipswich. It was the first time I have managed to come and see you live due to university commitments previously.
Needless to say both my partner and I were blown away by the interval, but my involvement with the finale just left me standing and wondering HOW HOW HOW?!!
Very very good show Derren, wish I could have got you to sign the programme afterwards, but I shall wait until your next show for that opportunity!
Anybody who hasnt yet seen this show and hasnt got a ticket, make sure you grab them at the soonest opportunity at a venue that has a few spaces left, you wont be disappointed!!
James
Thank you for a brilliant show on monday it was awesome 😀 still trying to think how it was done but have no idea!! thanks for signing my programme 😀 and will defo go and see you again next time.
enjoy the rest of your tour!
oh and excellent stewie impression you did on stage lol
Grey and bleak. All in a grim glum way …
YEAH !!! (male outburst), fist in the air).
Sometimes you need more time off (and less busy times off at that) so I’m completely happy with you taking a break from Twitting. Your work doesn’t just require creativity, research, writing, etc., but also public *performance* — and for that you really need to be in a right frame of mind and the right amount of energy.
So please don’t be apologetic about taking a break. Everyone benefits when you are performing well, and that’s what counts on a tour.
best wishes,
Chris
O DON’T do that! I’m in Westcliff and I completely missed the info about your being at the Cliffs and I am now completely and totally otherwise occupied this evening :(( Rats arses 🙁
So maybe you could drop me an email to cheer me up instead? 🙂
Having been to the last 2 tours when you visited Southend, I was upset to have not been able to attend this show. As I have been fortunate enough to be in thefront 2-3 rows for each show, I was blisfully unaware of any accoustic issues or lack of vibe. I hope this does not deter you in future!
derren! now, see how much better it works when ya LET it out instead of PUSHING it out? luv ya, guy. keep on conjurin!
the serenity of deep musing alongside the eternally moody sea sounds wunnerful. glad yer able to indulge.
LH&S,
roz
This has nothing to do with the post, but I just noticed the little smiley face at the bottom off the page on the left and it amused me 🙂 mas
I was there on Thursday night and one of the few outside the stage door! Very pleased with my piccie and autograph! Awesome show, Im still thinking about it!
Hi Derren,
I would have been one of the lively crowd for Thursday evenings show in Ipswich, had a great view from just 6 rows back, was watching intently to try & work out how you did some of the things you did but am still none the wiser & I know Fridays show was different as someone I know went to that & thought it was great, as did I! Unfortunately it meant it threw my plants in the audience theory out the window!!!
Keep up the good work.
Dawn xx
p.s loving what enigma means…you know what I’m saying!! 🙂
of cause he sounds down ,poor mans been in Ipswich, come back to Norwich so much more uplifting!!
Sorry you thought sunday was so unresponsive…. I know you found it hard to hear because of the layout of the theatre, I was sitting in row G and you must believe me when I say that everyone was buzzing after the show and it was truely excellent. Its a huge shame you couldn’t hear everyone because I know the audience thoroughly enjoyed it!
I’m kinda sad to know we were a rubbish audience :’-(
x
Derren, you were amazing at Ipswich on Saturday night, I thoroughly enjoyed myself please come back again!! X
I don’t think this post sounded sad, maybe a bit weary though!
Looking forward to seeing you for the first time on Friday. It was my Christmas present so it has been highly anticipated for months! With any luck the weather might even shine for us… then again… it is Scotland. 😉
I was at the Southend show on Sunday, and although I agree with your comments on a Sunday crowd being a little quiet, I can promise you that my wife and I had a brilliant time. I was amazed by some of the show, it was brilliant. You are a truly amazing showman.
you will get a louder &better repsponce when you come to liverpool in may so keep your chin up till then
My second experience of the Enigma tour last night (Monday at Cliffs Pavillion in Southend) and again I left feeling absolutely amazed – and slightly freaked out! – by the whole thing. Your performances are perfectly pitched and delivery appears effortless; I can only imagine how much work you put into each show to make it appear thus and thank you for it.
I introduced my parents to your live show this time round and think I can safely say they were suitably gobsmacked. Take pride in the fact that my normally complacent Dad didn’t stop exclaiming about your performance all the the way home and my Mum’s jaw is still dragging on the floor 😉 Travel safe x
Went to Saturday’s show in Ipswich and loved it. Couldn’t stop to meet you as my friend had to get back to Bury St Edmunds.
Had the great pleasure to see your show in ipswich on Saturday, you put on an amazing show and my wife has now finally forgiven me for booking the tickets from the delivery suite whilst she was in labour………well you have to get your priorities right, I love my son very much but we also love your show and quite frankly you were there first 🙂
Hello Derren,
I was at the Monday night Southend show. Amazing performance! I’ve seen all of your tour shows and they get better and better! The ending of this show is one of my favourites, along with the newspaper ending a couple of times ago.
Can’t wait to see what you come up with next!
hi derren, i was at southend on sunday and loved the show, i’m 14 and was sat in rown n. it was very possibly the best night of my life, i think you amazing and hope to be at the next tour, and would love to meet you one day.
thanks charlie 🙂
My wife and I (and our two ‘drains on our resources’) travelled to your show at Ipswich on Saturday and thought it was great. We always watch your shows on TV etc but to see you ‘live’ was something else…quite the showman! An hour after the show, we were back home again but still talking about it…that was the longest the kids had spoken to us for quite a while!
All the best with the remainder of your tour, and I look forward to seeing you again.
Many thanks,
Tom
hi derren, i was at your show on sunday and i thought it was brilliant, very possibly the best night of my life. i’m 14 years old and was sat in rown n, i loved every minute of it. derren i think you are amazing and hope to be at your next tour and would one day love too meet you.
thanks charlie
Look after yourself, lovely. Try not to put so much pressure on yourself. You’re a brilliant performer and that’s why people keep coming back for more. 🙂 Take care Mr. xx
Hi Derren,
I thought it was a lovely description of the seaside. There’s a difference between sad and bleak so I’m not sure why people are asking you if you’re ok. It’s normal to feel sort of grey-coloured sometimes don’t you think?
You ought to come to Melbourne. The sea is beautiful here, not at all the stereotype of an Australian beach but messier and windier and foam covered. Also my family is crazy about you! My dad does an amazing impression of that Welsh guy whose brain you made hurt, it’s so funny.
OK, lots of love and luck,
Ella
Interesting how the audience change through the week Derren. But makes sense the Friday crowd being more up for it and the Sunday crowd having one eye on work on Monday. Looking forward to Friday in Edinburgh mate. sure we will all be in great form.
See you Friday
Derren Derren Derren worry not. I’m sure everyone loved all the shows. I shall try and be very noisy from the front in Cardiff…. might even jab my sister in the ribs now and again and make sure she is noisy too 😉 Not quite sure if you can make much noise with jaw touching knees though?
I agree Susi, it doesn’t sound really down… Bleak views, for me, will cheer me up far more than the usual busy hustle and bustle of humanity around me. Looking at a stormy sea, a giant moon in an inky night’s sky, or that weird yellowish color that the world turns right before a storm on a warm day… that makes the world feel comfortable, beautiful, somewhere I want to be. Something my art teacher used to call ‘the sublime’. Something that makes me wish I could draw better.
Point? Oh, ehm, point. My point, I guess, was that I get the sentiment, and that it isn’t necessarily a bad or sad one.
hi derren carnt wait till saterday to come and see you for the first time at bradford i hope i can get my book signed by u and a pic to show all my mate..
i think your ace at what you do on the shows i have seen i hope it is as good at the show on saterday

@#*$ it!
I’ve bought the tickets last november, and I got cancelled on by a so called friend…
Wanted to be in Ipswitch to see the show!
Derren, will you be doing a show in The Netherlands? I sure hope so!
Cheers!
Hi Derren!
I was there on Sunday night, and my Dad and I thoroughly enjoyed the show! We were sitting far up on the balcony but heard you fine. Sorry you thought it wasn’t a responsive audience – me and Dad were cheering loudly and gave a standing ovation! You deserved it in every way possible! 🙂 The show was truly amazing! I’m still trying to get my head around how you did it!
Thanks for a great night, and I hope you feel more cheery soon!
🙂
Hi Derren, looks like you’ve been suffused with the inherent melancholy of the English Seaside…I’m sure it will wear off. Please don’t take too long a break from Twitter – your tweets are head and shoulders above everyone (even the sainted Stephen F!) – they are intelligent, witty and insightful – we will all miss you if you stop…
Hope you like Southend. My school is just up the road from the Cliffs Pavillion – would’ve came down to say hello if I knew you were sitting on the cliffs! Just home from your final show in Southend. By far the best I’ve ever seen 🙂 xxxx
Excellent show in Southend tonight. Was hoping to get to meet you but couldn’t have it all. Show itself was great though and you were as funny as ever!
