Steven’s Q&A
Below we have a lovely Q&A by that young layabout from Derren Brown: Apocalypse (YEAH, DERREN BROWN: APOCALYPSE NOT STEVEN BROSNAN:APOCALYPSE THOUGH YOU’D NEVER GUESS IT WOULD YOU?). Steven asked his now roughly 15,000 followers on Twitter to send in any questions they wanted to about his experience and he has answered the most common ones below. I’m posting it here for him exactly as he wrote it, as he doesn’t have a blog.
Meanwhile, part 2 of Fear and Faith – and the final instalment of this year’s television from your occasional blogger – happens this Friday at 9.
Ta-ta.

….
I sent out a tweet asking if there was anything you felt that was unanswered, I’ve answered a few of the most popular questions to try and help ease your understanding.
Why didn’t you attack the infected?
I get asked this the most. You have to remember that this is not a Hollywood movie, I’m not Bruce Willis. This was real and I’m not a violent person. When watching the news report, they said the infection could be passed by any form of contact. I wanted to avoid any possible interaction with the infected and stay as far away from them as possible and fortunately there was no situation in which I had to defend myself or anyone else from them.
At any point did you think it was fake?
No, everything I went through I was fully immersed in what I was doing. I was in the middle of an apocalypse and I was trying to get back to my family in Wales before the border shut.
Are there any negative effects?
There are no negative effects whatsoever. No nightmares or flashbacks. Everything I have gained from this event in my life has been positive and I’m glad I went through it all to change me into the person I am now.
Were you angry at the reveal?
No not at all, relief and happiness were the main emotions going on when everything was revealed. Looking back on my experience I have no regrets or bad feelings towards anyone involved.
Did you ever think of giving up?
No, not at all. The biggest thought in my mind was getting to Brecon.
What did Derren say to you on the phone to make you fall asleep?
I don’t know, simply put. Last thing I remember is picking up the phone off the table.
What was your scariest moment?
Definitely encountering my first infected in hospital.
What did you think of the infected?
I was ruddy scared of them, but when they weren’t scaring me I did feel kind of sorry for them, not knowing fully what they were and thinking I wouldn’t want to be one of them.
What was it like watching yourself?
It was a little weird, as I watched I could feel the same emotions from when I was there. But overall I was quite comfortable with it.
Did you find anything embarrassing?
Yeah of course, think it’s embarrassing when one person catches you picking your nose? Try a whole nation, I laughed it off though.
What did you eat and drink?
There was tons of canned food in the bunker, and plenty bottles of water.
Where did you go to the toilet?
Surprisingly popular question. In the program you can see a row of portable loos to the right of the bunker entrance, that’s where I went.
Was there anything they didn’t show?
Yeah I made a few hilarious jokes which never made the cut. But as you could imagine with almost 2 days of filming me there was a lot of footage and with only 2 hours to show it, they can’t have everything in there, really though there was nothing extra I wish they could have put in, the editing team did a great job.
Is your bedroom tidy now?
My bedroom is incredibly tidy now; it’s hard to have a clear mind with a dirty room.
Did you ever get to see The Killers?
Yes! I did! They were amazing! Derren and the team were very kind and managed to get some tickets for me. I was very wary of getting on any busses this time though.
This experience was for everyone that viewed it. I think the genuine emotion you felt was felt by the the nation. When your world ended during the news broadcast in the hospital your expression said it all. Thankyou and Derren for truly entertaining us with real emotion, drama and suspense that beats the daily repetition of predictable TV. I wish you all the best in life and am geniunely happy to have watched a stranger transform thier lives and thier families.
Derren – you are indeed the best sneaky wizard of our day
Simon
omg apocalypse was amazing! derren & steven abs fab!!! I wish something like that happened to me! xx π
I know this may not apply to everyone, and also completely believe in what happened, how come you never swore?
Do you remember what it felt like when Derren made you ‘sleep’?
You may have notcied a lot of people watched a conspiracy video of the “moving water bottle”. As I can’t find anything on Derren’s facebook page mentioning it i was wondering whether you could did you move it or as it says on the clip is this scene fake? I highly doubt it but I would like to put my mind at ease
Msg from Abeo: This was answered in Derren’s Q&A http://derrenbrown.co.uk/apocalypse-qa/ (See question I HAVE SPOTTED A CONTINUITY ERROR. DOES THAT MEAN ITΓ’β¬β’S ALL FAKE?)
Was fantastic to watch.. Even though I felt really sorry for you…. Well done Derren Brown and well done you… X
I utterly loved the show and Steven! Derren and his team did a great thing!
at any point did you suspect that it was all just a plot? i mean its kind of hard to believe that newsreaders and tv presenters aren’t affected and the end of the world is only affecting England. Wales and Scotland don’t get infected either!!!!
In a bedroom full of hidden cameras, did you happen across anything suspicious? Perhaps when searching for your phone?
Well done Steven, you’re a credit to us nose pickers everywhere.
Thank you for the Q&A as well. Although, I must admit, the question of toileting had not entered my mind. I just assumed Derren took care of that. Probably with some kind of hypnosis/puppetry hybrid. (TM)
Much love to both Steven and Derren, and all involved in the venture.
Nice wrap up of an amazing event. I love the last two questions in particular, as it’s the little changes that measure progress in one’s life, and the little gifts that show gratitude from friends.
cheers,
Chris
I’d go as far as to say this was one of the greatest pieces of television ever conceived and executed. Hats off to all involved.
In the military base: why you didn’t have any weapon on you?? I mean hummer, a bat, knife, etc. (probably no armory in the set up military base- but something?)
You spent so much time watching tv, haven’t you watched the walking Dead?
I think that I could kill an actor by accident
hi steven, your sister here
everyone in china was crying when i showed them the show! hope you keep your room tidy, by the way you have 15,000 followers on twitter??? i dont even know your twitter name!
Genius…GR8 viewing…& I was gutted that it finished…I really felt for you..PS Love Derren Brown…He’s just Amazing………..
If only we all had a Derren Brown at the end of the phone.
Steven didn’t find any cameras looking for his phone in his bedroom as they were only there for the last day.
Thanks for all the positive responses.
looking back on how you were before the apocalypse what would your best advice be on your old self or someone who was like you? brilliant show btw congrats to everyone who took part π
Me and my friends tuned into Apocalypse both Fridays, absolute silence and open mouths prevailed throughout the show and then we didn’t stop talking about it for weeks. It was brilliant. After the first episode we weren’t sure, seeing as Steven seemed so shaken up, we did alot of worrying for your welfare Steven! But the way you looked after Leona must’ve made your family proud. We all welled up when you went back for her. Congratulations, you are wonderful.
Having watched this programme, I’m wondering if you think it’s possible to make people fall out of love with someone… Could a scenario be constructed under hypnotism to make people give up on someone that they love? For people suffering from unrequited love, it can ruin their whole lives. Is love too strong an emotion to interfere with?
I found it so emotional to watch this! there were quite a few times that i did cry, While watching it i kept saying that it was cruel and unfair to put a person through something so traumatic and that first moment where he woke up and was watching the tv, it broke my heart and i really felt for him. However to see the results it caused and that he felt like it was just a bad dream did make it easier to accept as we have ALL had dreams that were traumatic and horrifying but we wake up and relax knowing we are safe in our homes. I did turn to my boyfriend at the end of the show and say ‘this is gonna get him soooo many girls’ his bravery and that fact he went back for Liona was just so sweet!
Also i would love to know IF the family got to watch Steven as he went through this at all? Because if i was crying i can’t imagine Steven’s mum would have been able to watch!
I really enjoyed the two episodes about fear and faith. Thank you!
I would have had some respect for your show today on Channel 4 if you had picked male subjects instead. Would that have made things more difficult, Derren? Second, for all your positivist good intentions (‘no God, just your feelings, dear!’), I do think that if the equation between God and feelings were to exhaust the issue, religion would have been dead long ago. Third, I am a believer, but stuff like your tapping on the table would not have reinforced anything other than a sense of disgust at the gesture that would have compromised your experiment for good (tapping gets on my nerves, especially coming from a man).
I find your positivist approach alienating, not enlightening. Whereas old-fashioned magic always shows more than it performs, yours performs more than it shows, though it sets out to show.
Does anyone know if Derren is on Google+? When you search, there several obvious impersonators, but I can’t tell if one of them might be legit.
Msg from Abeo: You can find the official list here: http://derrenbrown.co.uk/faq/ We have a Google+ account, it’s not used yet though.
Hahaha!!! Love some of the questions!!! Simple but you do wonder those things!!!!
To quote the great Johnny Rotten, “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated”.
The show was GREAT and I was happy to see so much humanity in one man… The only thing which surprised me was that the girl didn’t cry at all…
Personally I was crying most of the second part, the show gave me so much emotions!!!
Thanks to Derren and his team! It was very nice to watch it!
Regardless of how unaffected he seems to be, it still seems disgusting that someone can kidnap and torture a man and yet everyone seems to be applauding him for it.
Does cruelty really mean nothing to anyone any more?
Dear Darren I would like to see if you could try to sort out the human mannequin as I watch her I think every one would like to see how good you are I do not no her but I would like to see if her condition could be cured like you do with fear it mite be mind over matter I think she so strong what she go throw
omg apocalypse was amazin! I cried a little bit tho xox
I have only just got round to watching the apocalypse, i think i speak for a lot of people when i say that the emotions and sheer experiences steven went through were bloody crazy! Was awesome to watch though! π
Derren,
I am planning a deception detection experiment for my psychology undergrad research project. I want to examine the more classic examples of police officers skill level versus a more unconventional method. I am looking at how criminal investigative work could be helped through more obscure skills. Ideally I would like the best around, can you help me and participate in my study or at least recommend a good mentalist/ showman who may be able to?
I watched this at my mums as I don’t have time to watch telly until I visit her!
But I felt so much angst for you it was brilliant and thrilling to watch.
You handled the situation exactly how the human mind would. Hats off to you sir.
It got me thinking even more how the mind is an incredible thing following derrens shows scares me and exhuasts me he is a genius. <3
Congratulations on Apocalypse Derren…(and Steven!)
It was absolutely fantastic and I don’t think I will ever tire of watching it!
Hopefully am purchasing tickets for Infamous this week! I’d love to meet Derren; does anyone know if he will come out after the show and meet fans?
Apocalypse has had such a strong impact on me. Extremely action packed, could have become gruesome, but it wasn’t. It was thoroughly entertaining and with a strong message. – Grab life with both hands. Thank you Darren, and well done Steven!
Hi Derren,
I currently live in the US and have watched your shows on Youtube. I have a question. have you ever had the thought of exposing the fakes in India, the land of many Gods and cults? I can tell you that there are many Godmen in India who control vast masses of populations. They have mastered hypnotic methods and magic tricks to fool millions of people who swear by them and will fight for them. It would be great if you can expose some of these fakes. These guys can talk big on philosophy and “heal” many. But they are not genuine. Your trip to Texas to expose the Evangelical crooks was a great piece of work. I look forward to seeing a program from you that exposes some of the fake gurus in India and South East Asia. I can tell that they use methods that induce catalepsy, auto hypnosis etc based on what you have been showing. I am sure there are genuine yogis and gurus in India who do not fool or try to control others. But the many in the open are clearly crooks. I can give you one example – Rajneesh. Please let me know if you are planning to visit the land of the yogis sometime.
